A search for starlight reflected from HD 75289 b
We have used a doppler tomographic analysis to conduct a deep search for the
starlight reflected from the planetary companion to HD 75289. In 4 nights on
VLT2/UVES in January 2003, we obtained 684 high resolution echelle spectra with
a total integration time of 26 hours. We establish an upper limit on the
planet's geometric albedo p < 0.12 (to the 99.9% significance level) at the
most probable orbital inclination i ~ 60 degrees, assuming a grey albedo, a
Venus-like phase function and a planetary radius R_p = 1.6 R_Jup. We are able
to rule out some combinations of the predicted planetary radius and atmospheric

Charged Dilaton Black Holes with a Cosmological Constant
The properties of static spherically symmetric black holes, which are either
electrically or magnetically charged, and which are coupled to the dilaton in
the presence of a cosmological constant, are considered. It is shown that such
solutions do not exist if the cosmological constant is positive (in arbitrary
spacetime dimension >= 4). However, asymptotically anti-de Sitter black hole
solutions with a single horizon do exist if the cosmological constant is
negative. These solutions are studied numerically in four dimensions and the
thermodynamic properties of the solutions are derived. The extreme solutions
are found to have zero entropy and infinite temperature for all non-zero values

On the Rotating Charged Black String Solution
A rotating charged black string solution in the low energy effective field
theory describing five dimensional heterotic string theory is constructed. The
solution is labelled by mass, electric charge, axion charge and angular

The X-ray eclipse of the dwarf nova HT CAS observed by the XMM-Newton satellite: spectral and timing analysis
A cataclysmic variable is a binary system consisting of a white dwarf that
accretes material from a secondary object via the Roche-lobe mechanism. In the
case of long enough observation, a detailed temporal analysis can be performed,
allowing the physical properties of the binary system to be determined. We
present an XMM-Newton observation of the dwarf nova HT Cas acquired to resolve
the binary system eclipses and constrain the origin of the X-rays observed. We
also compare our results with previous ROSAT and ASCA data. After the spectral
analysis of the three EPIC camera signals, the observed X-ray light curve was
studied with well known techniques and the eclipse contact points obtained.
The X-ray spectrum can be described by thermal bremsstrahlung of temperature
keV plus a black-body component (upper limit) with
temperature eV. Neglecting the black-body, the bolometric
absorption corrected flux is erg
s cm, which, for a distance of HT Cas of 131 pc, corresponds to a
bolometric luminosity of erg s.
The study of the eclipse in the EPIC light curve permits us to constrain the
size and location of the X-ray emitting region, which turns out to be close to
the white dwarf radius. We measure an X-ray eclipse somewhat smaller (but only
at a level of ) than the corresponding optical one. If this
is the case, we have possibly identified the signature of either high latitude
emission or a layer of X-ray emitting material partially obscured by an

Demonstration of the Complementarity of One- and Two-Photon Interference
The visibilities of second-order (single-photon) and fourth-order
(two-photon) interference have been observed in a Young's double-slit
experiment using light generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion and
a photon-counting intensified CCD camera. Coherence and entanglement underlie
one-and two-photon interference, respectively. As the effective source size is
increased, coherence is diminished while entanglement is enhanced, so that the
visibility of single-photon interference decreases while that of two-photon
interference increases. This is the first experimental demonstration of the
complementarity between single- and two-photon interference (coherence and
entanglement) in the spatial domain.Comment: 21 pages, 7 figure
Charged Nariai Black Holes With a Dilaton
The Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black holes of standard Einstein-Maxwell
theory with a cosmological constant have no analogue in dilatonic theories with
a Liouville potential. The only exception are the solutions of maximal mass,
the Charged Nariai solutions. We show that the structure of the solution space
of the Dilatonic Charged Nariai black holes is quite different from the
non-dilatonic case. Its dimensionality depends on the exponential coupling
constants of the dilaton. We discuss the possibility of pair creating such
black holes on a suitable background. We find conditions for the existence of
Charged Nariai solutions in theories with general dilaton potentials, and

Beyond the Singularity of the 2-D Charged Black Hole
Two dimensional charged black holes in string theory can be obtained as exact
(SL(2,R)xU(1))/U(1) quotient CFTs. The geometry of the quotient is induced from
that of the group, and in particular includes regions beyond the black hole
singularities. Moreover, wavefunctions in such black holes are obtained from
gauge invariant vertex operators in the SL(2,R) CFT, hence their behavior
beyond the singularity is determined. When the black hole is charged we find
that the wavefunctions are smooth at the singularities. Unlike the uncharged
case, scattering waves prepared beyond the singularity are not fully reflected;
part of the wave is transmitted through the singularity. Hence, the physics
outside the horizon of a charged black hole is sensitive to conditions set

SuperWASP: Wide Angle Search for Planets
SuperWASP is a fully robotic, ultra-wide angle survey for planetary transits.
Currently under construction, it will consist of 5 cameras, each monitoring a
9.5 x 9.5 deg field of view. The Torus mount and enclosure will be fully
automated and linked to a built-in weather station. We aim to begin

HST/FOS Eclipse Observations of the Nova-like Cataclysmic Variable UX Ursae Majoris
[abridged abstract]
We present and analyze Hubble Space Telescope observations of the eclipsing
nova-like cataclysmic variable UX UMa obtained with the Faint Object
Spectrograph. Two eclipses each were observed with the G160L grating (covering
the ultraviolet waveband) in August of 1994 and with the PRISM (covering the
near-ultraviolet to near-infrared) in November of the same year. The system was
50% brighter in November than in August, which, if due to a change in the
accretion rate, indicates a fairly substantial increase in Mdot_acc by >~ 50%.
Model disk spectra constructed as ensembles of stellar atmospheres provide
poor descriptions of the observed post-eclipse spectra, despite the fact that
UX UMa's light should be dominated by the disk at this time. Suitably scaled
single temperature model stellar atmospheres with T_eff = 12,500-14,500 K
actually provide a better match to both the ultraviolet and optical
post-eclipse spectra. Evidently, great care must be taken in attempts to derive
accretion rates from comparisons of disk models to observations.
One way to reconcile disk models with the observed post-eclipse spectra is to
postulate the presence of a significant amount of optically thin material in
the system. Such an optically thin component might be associated with the
transition region (``chromosphere'') between the disk photosphere and the fast
wind from the system, whose presence has been suggested by Knigge & Drew

Validation of the questionnaire on beliefs about medication with type 2 diabetic patients
O presente trabalho teve como objectivo validar o Questionário Crenças sobre a Medicação, que avalia Crenças Gerais e Crenças Específicas, estudando suas propriedades psicométricas em uma amostra de 387 pacientes diabéticos tipo 2. O estudo de validade para as Crenças Gerais revelou uma solução de um factor, com um alfa de 0,76, e para as Crenças Específicas, dois factores – Necessidades e Preocupações –, com um alfa de 0,77 e 0,69 respectivamente. Quanto à validade de constructo, verificou-se uma relação entre as Crenças Gerais e a subescala Necessidades das Crenças Específicas com Adesão à Medicação, avaliada pela Escala de Avaliação de Aderência Médica. O instrumento apresenta boas qualidades psicométricas para ser utilizado em pacientes diabéticos tipo 2.The present paper focused on the validation of the Questionnaire on Beliefs about Medication, which assesses both General Beliefs and Specific Beliefs. The psychometric properties of the instrument were analyzed on a sample of 387 type 2 diabetic patients. The validity study for General Beliefs found a unifactorial solution, with an alpha of .76, and for Specific Beliefs, a two-factor solution – Necessities and Concern –, with an alpha of .77 and .69, respectively. In terms of construct validity, a relationship between General Beliefs, subscale Necessities from Specific Beliefs, and adherence to medication, as evaluated by Medical Adherence Rating Scale, was found.
