Subnanosecond GPS-based clock synchronization and precision deep-space tracking

    Get PDF
Interferometric spacecraft tracking is accomplished by the Deep Space Network (DSN) by comparing the arrival time of electromagnetic spacecraft signals at ground antennas separated by baselines on the order of 8000 km. Clock synchronization errors within and between DSN stations directly impact the attainable tracking accuracy, with a 0.3-nsec error in clock synchronization resulting in an 11-nrad angular position error. This level of synchronization is currently achieved by observing a quasar which is angularly close to the spacecraft just after the spacecraft observations. By determining the differential arrival times of the random quasar signal at the stations, clock offsets and propagation delays within the atmosphere and within the DSN stations are calibrated. Recent developments in time transfer techniques may allow medium accuracy (50-100 nrad) spacecraft tracking without near-simultaneous quasar-based calibrations. Solutions are presented for a worldwide network of Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers in which the formal errors for DSN clock offset parameters are less than 0.5 nsec. Comparisons of clock rate offsets derived from GPS measurements and from very long baseline interferometry (VLBI), as well as the examination of clock closure, suggest that these formal errors are a realistic measure of GPS-based clock offset precision and accuracy. Incorporating GPS-based clock synchronization measurements into a spacecraft differential ranging system would allow tracking without near-simultaneous quasar observations. The impact on individual spacecraft navigation-error sources due to elimination of quasar-based calibrations is presented. System implementation, including calibration of station electronic delays, is discussed

    Sonic levitation apparatus

    Get PDF
A sonic levitation apparatus is disclosed which includes a sonic transducer which generates acoustical energy responsive to the level of an electrical amplifier. A duct communicates with an acoustical chamber to deliver an oscillatory motion of air to a plenum section which contains a collimated hole structure having a plurality of parallel orifices. The collimated hole structure converts the motion of the air to a pulsed. Unidirectional stream providing enough force to levitate a material specimen. Particular application to the production of microballoons in low gravity environment is discussed

Cost effective use of liquid nitrogen in cryogenic wind tunnels

    Get PDF
A method of reliquefying from 12 to 19% of the nitrogen exhaust gas from a cryogenic wind tunnel has been developed. Technical feasibility and cost effectiveness of the system depends on performance of an innovative positive displacement expander which requires scale model testing to confirm design studies. The existing cryogenic system at the 0.3-m transonic cryogenic tunnel has been surveyed and extensive upgrades proposed. Upgrades are generally cost effective and may be implemented immediately since they are based on established technology

The Human Empowerment Sequence and the Development of Libertarian Values: A Theoretical and Empirical Adjustment to the Human Empowerment Sequence

Building on the work of Inglehart and colleagues (e.g., Inglehart, 1971; Inglehart & Welzel, 2005), Welzel (2013) sets out a step-by-step theory explaining how democracies arise from processes of modernization. The intermediary stages in the causal chain he sets out explain the connection between action resources and emancipatory values. In short, Welzel provides strong evidence that people must first have the material, intellectual, and connective resources to exercise certain freedoms before they develop values that will motivate them to seek out those freedoms. While we are convinced by much of Welzel’s argument, we also note a substantial overlap between these intermediary stages of Welzel’s theory and the individual-level authoritarianism literature. Integrating current theory on authoritarianism into Welzel’s thesis at the point of overlap provides for a distinct set of hypotheses and a more nuanced understanding of how individual differences work in Welzel’s theory. Analyses of data from wave 5 of the World Values Survey and Vanhanen (2003) provide some initial evidence in support of our amended view of the intermediary stages of Welzel’s modernization thesis

A Parametric Study of a Plug Nozzle, Using the Liquid Propellant Program (LPP) Code

    Get PDF
The Liquid Propellant Program (LPP) computer code is a super-set of the industry standard Two Dimensional Kinetics (TDK) computer code. The TDK code uses a two dimensional method of characteristics solution with fully coupled finite rate kinetics for axially symmetric nozzles. The chemical reactions are modeled with a generalized reaction package that include three dimensional body efficiencies and four reaction rate forms. The code performs optional solutions for frozen or equilibrium flow. TDK evaluates discrete shocks, both attached or induced. The Transonic module models variable mixture ratio profiles from the combustion chamber injector. The Mass Addition Boundary Layer module (MABL) calculates the boundary parameters with the same chemistry options, and includes transpiration or tangential slot injection of gas at the wall. The LPP upgrades include: planar nozzle, scarfed nozzles, plug nozzles, and scramjet nozzle configurations. The code evaluates both upper and lower wall flow simulation, and includes the interaction with the external flow. The MABL module evaluates equilibrium radiation heat transfer for both upper and lower walls. In addition, LPP code models combustion effects due to injector inefficiencies with the Spray Combustion Analysis Program (SCAP) module. The LPP package provides extensive post plotting capabilities for flow visualization. The LPP is sufficiently fast and robust to provide performance predictions for extensive parametric studies and sufficiently accurate to provide flow field and performance solutions for detailed studies
