Ab-initio study of disorder effects on the electronic and magnetic structures of SrFeMoO
We have investigated the electronic structure of ordered and disordered
SrFeMoO using {\it ab-initio} band structure methods. The effect of
disorder was simulated within super-cell calculations to realize several
configurations with mis-site disorders. It is found that such disorder effects
destroy the half-metallic ferro-magnetic state of the ordered compound. It also
leads to a substantial reduction of the magnetic moments at the Fe sites in the
disordered configurations. Most interestingly, it is found for the disordered
configurations, that the magnetic coupling within the Fe sub-lattice as well as
that within the Mo sub-lattice always remain ferro-magnetic, while the two
sub-lattices couple anti-ferromagnetically, in close analogy to the magnetic
structure of the ordered compound, but in contrast to recent suggestions.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure
Turbulence, Complexity, and Solar Flares
The issue of predicting solar flares is one of the most fundamental in
physics, addressing issues of plasma physics, high-energy physics, and
modelling of complex systems. It also poses societal consequences, with our
ever-increasing need for accurate space weather forecasts. Solar flares arise
naturally as a competition between an input (flux emergence and rearrangement)
in the photosphere and an output (electrical current build up and resistive
dissipation) in the corona. Although initially localised, this redistribution
affects neighbouring regions and an avalanche occurs resulting in large scale
eruptions of plasma, particles, and magnetic field. As flares are powered from
the stressed field rooted in the photosphere, a study of the photospheric
magnetic complexity can be used to both predict activity and understand the
physics of the magnetic field. The magnetic energy spectrum and multifractal
spectrum are highlighted as two possible approaches to this.Comment: 2 figure
The glycemic elemental profile of trichosanthes dioica: a LIBS-based study
The scientific evaluation of the antidiabetic efficacy of aqueous extract of Trichosanthes dioica fruits on streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats is being presented. The graded doses of the extract, viz., 500, 750, 1,000, and 1,250 mg/kg body weight (bw), were administered orally, and it was observed that the blood glucose concentration decreased in a dose-dependent manner. The dose of 1,000 mg/kg bw showed the maximum fall of 23.8% and 19.1% in blood glucose level (BGL) during fasting BGL and glucose tolerance test (GTT) studies, respectively, of nondiabetic rats. Whereas in the case of subdiabetic and mild diabetic models, the same dose showed reduction in BGL of 22.0% and 31.4% during GTT. The study also involves the first use of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy as a sensitive analytical tool to detect the elemental profile responsible for the antidiabetic activity of aqueous extract of T. dioica fruits that exhibits the antidiabetic activity. High intensities of Ca, Mg, and Fe indicate large concentrations of these elements in the extract, since according to Boltzmann’s distribution law, intensities are directly proportional to concentrations. The higher concentrations of these glycemic elements, viz. Ca, Mg, and Fe, are responsible for the antidiabetic potential of T. dioica as well as other plant already reported by our research group
Application of LIBS in Detection of Antihyperglycemic Trace Elements in Momordica charantia
The present study exploits the information based on concentration of trace elements and minerals in understanding the role/mechanism of action of freeze-dried fruit powder suspended in distilled water of Momordica charantia (family: Cucurbitaceae) in diabetes treatment. Laser-induced break down spectroscopy (LIBS) spectra of plant product was recorded under optimized experimental conditions and analyzed. Several atomic lines such as Na, K, Mg, Ca, Fe, Al, etc. have been observed in the LIBS spectra of the above plant product. The concentrations of these minerals are determined by using calibration-free LIBS method. Correlation between the concentration of these elements/minerals and their defined role in diabetes management was studied in normal as well as diabetic animal model
Practical, reliable and inexpensive assay of lycopene in tomato products based on the combined use of light emitting diode (LED) and the optothermal window
Light emitting diode (LED) combined with the concept of optothermal window (OW) is proposed as a new approach (LED-OW) to detect lycopene in a wide range of tomato-based products (tomato juice, tomato ketchup, tomato passata and tomato puree). Phytonutrient lycopene is a dominant antioxidant in these products while beta-carotene is present in significantly lower quantities. Therefore for all practical reasons the interfering effect of beta-carotene at 502 nm analytical wavelength can be neglected. The LED-OW method is low-cost and simple, yet accurate and precise. The major attributes of the new method are its rapid speed of response and the fact that no preparation whatsoever of the sample is needed before the analysis. The lycopene found in tomato products studied here varies from 8 mg/100 g to 60 mg/100 g fresh product. Results obtained by LED-OW method were compared to the outcome of conventional, time consuming spectrophotometric methods and the correlation was very good (R = 0.98). Precision of the LED-OW instrumental setup ranged from 0.5 to 7.4%; the RSD achieved for lycopene-richest samples (= 40 mg/100 g) did not exceed 1.7%. Repeatability of analysis by LED-OW was found to vary between 0.7 and 7.1%

Generalised discrete torsion and mirror symmetry for G_2 manifolds
A generalisation of discrete torsion is introduced in which different
discrete torsion phases are considered for the different fixed points or twist
fields of a twisted sector. The constraints that arise from modular invariance
are analysed carefully. As an application we show how all the different
resolutions of the T^7/Z_2^3 orbifold of Joyce have an interpretation in terms
of such generalised discrete torsion orbifolds. Furthermore, we show that these
manifolds are pairwise identified under G_2 mirror symmetry. From a conformal
field theory point of view, this mirror symmetry arises from an automorphism of

A Note on Fluxes and Superpotentials in M-theory Compactifications on Manifolds of G_2 Holonomy
We consider the breaking of N=1 supersymmetry by non-zero G-flux when
M-theory is compactified on a smooth manifold X of G_2 holonomy. Gukov has
proposed a superpotential W to describe this breaking in the low-energy
effective theory. We check this proposal by comparing the bosonic potential
implied by W with the corresponding potential deduced from the
eleven-dimensional supergravity action. One interesting aspect of this check is
that, though W depends explicitly only on G-flux supported on X, W also

Ecological indicators for coral reef fisheries management
Coral reef fisheries are of great importance both economically and for food security, but many reefs are showing evidence of overfishing, with significant ecosystem-level consequences for reef condition. In response, ecological indicators have been developed to assess the state of reef fisheries and their broader ecosystem-level impacts. To date, use of fisheries indicators for coral reefs has been rather piecemeal, with no overarching understanding of their performance with respect to highlighting fishing effects. Here, we provide a review of multispecies fishery-independent indicators used to evaluate fishing impacts on coral reefs. We investigate the consistency with which indicators highlight fishing effects on coral reefs. We then address questions of statistical power and uncertainty, type of fishing gradient, scale of analysis, the influence of other variables and the need for more work to set reference points for empirical, fisheries-independent indicators on coral reefs. Our review provides knowledge that will help underpin the assessment of the ecological effects of fishing, offering essential support for the development and implementation of coral reef fisheries management plans
Type IIA Orientifold Limit of M-Theory on Compact Joyce 8-Manifold of Spin(7)-Holonomy
We show that M-theory compactified on a compact Joyce 8-manifold of
-holonomy, which yields an effective theory in with = 1
supersymmetry, admits at some special points in it moduli space a description
in terms of type IIA theory on an orientifold of compact Joyce 7-manifold of
-holonomy. We find the evidence in favour of this duality by computing the
massless spectra on both M-thory side and type IIA side. For the latter, we
compute the massless spectra by going to the orbifold limit of the Joyce
