Universality of Cluster Dynamics
We have studied the kinetics of cluster formation for dynamical systems of
dimensions up to interacting through elastic collisions or coalescence.
These systems could serve as possible models for gas kinetics, polymerization
and self-assembly. In the case of elastic collisions, we found that the cluster
size probability distribution undergoes a phase transition at a critical time
which can be predicted from the average time between collisions. This enables
forecasting of rare events based on limited statistical sampling of the
collision dynamics over short time windows. The analysis was extended to
L-normed spaces () to allow for some amount of
interpenetration or volume exclusion. The results for the elastic collisions
are consistent with previously published low-dimensional results in that a
power law is observed for the empirical cluster size distribution at the
critical time. We found that the same power law also exists for all dimensions
, 2D L norms, and even for coalescing collisions in 2D. This
broad universality in behavior may be indicative of a more fundamental process
governing the growth of clusters
Pleosporales
One hundred and five generic types of Pleosporales are described and illustrated. A brief introduction and detailed history with short notes on morphology, molecular phylogeny as well as a general conclusion of each genus are provided. For those genera where the type or a representative specimen is unavailable, a brief note is given. Altogether 174 genera of Pleosporales are treated. Phaeotrichaceae as well as Kriegeriella, Zeuctomorpha and Muroia are excluded from Pleosporales. Based on the multigene phylogenetic analysis, the suborder Massarineae is emended to accommodate five families, viz. Lentitheciaceae, Massarinaceae, Montagnulaceae, Morosphaeriaceae and Trematosphaeriaceae
Social Unionism and the Framing of Fairness in the Wisconsin Uprising
YesThe concept of ‘fairness’ has been used to frame political struggles by politicians and activists across the political spectrum. This article looks at its use in the US State of Wisconsin during the ‘Uprising’ – a series of occupations, protests, recall elections and militant direct action that began in 2011. These events were a response to a ‘budget repair bill’ that sought to strip public sector union members of their collective bargaining rights and to apply severe austerity measures within the State. This article suggests that although ‘fairness’ has a certain broad-based and intuitive appeal, its mutability means that it is unlikely to be successful in framing a structural critique that can build and sustain social action. Instead, it argues that framing this conflict as an uprising suggested a more explicit form of resistance that enabled a wider mobilization, and this can best be understood as an example of social (movement) unionism – the extension of traditional work place rights approaches to include broader agendas of social justice, civil rights, immigrant rights and economic justice for non-unionized workers
A distinct subtype of dopaminergic interneuron displays inverted structural plasticity at the axon initial segment
The axon initial segment (AIS) is a specialized structure near the start of the axon that is a site of neuronal plasticity. Changes in activity levels in vitro and in vivo can produce structural AIS changes in excitatory cells that have been linked to alterations in excitability, but these effects have never been described in inhibitory interneurons. In the mammalian olfactory bulb (OB), dopaminergic interneurons are particularly plastic, undergoing constitutive turnover throughout life and regulating tyrosine hydroxylase expression in an activitydependent manner. Here we used dissociated cultures of rat and mouseOBto show that a subset of bulbar dopaminergic neurons possess an AIS and that these AIS-positive cells are morphologically and functionally distinct from their AIS-negative counterparts. Under baseline conditions,OBdopaminergic AISs were short and located distally along the axon but, in response to chronic 24 h depolarization, lengthened and relocated proximally toward the soma. These activity-dependent changes were in the opposite direction to both those we saw in non-GABAergic OB neurons and those reported previously for excitatory cell types. Inverted AIS plasticity in OB dopaminergic cells was bidirectional, involved all major components of the structure, was dependent on the activity of L-type CaV1 calcium channels but not on the activity of the calcium-activated phosphatase calcineurin, and was opposed by the actions of cyclin-dependent kinase 5. Such distinct forms of AIS plasticity in inhibitory interneurons and excitatory projection neurons may allow considerable flexibility when neuronal networks must adapt to perturbations in their ongoing activity.</p
The Importance of Grey and Qualitative Literature in Developing Domestic Violence and Abuse and Child Maltreatment Core Outcome Sets: A Brief Report
Purpose: Core Outcome Sets (COS) are agreed sets of outcomes to be used in all trials that evaluate the effect of interventions. This report considers the added value of including grey and qualitative literature in a study to identify COSs of family-focused interventions for CM and DVA. / Methods: We identified outcomes of interventions for DVA or CM through systematically searching 12 academic databases and 86 organisation websites, leading to the inclusion of 485 full-text reports across 6 reviews. We developed a candidate outcome longlist comprising 347 extracted outcomes. / Results: We identified 87% (282/347) of candidate outcomes from the grey and qualitative literature, and 37% (127/347) from the trial literature. Of the candidate outcomes on the longlist, 22% (75/347) were identified solely from the grey or qualitative literature and 7% (26/347) from trial literature. Three of the eight outcomes in the final core outcome sets may have been missed if grey or qualitative literature had not been searched. / Conclusions: The qualitative and grey literature adds DVA and CM outcomes that are relevant to survivor perspectives but not reported in trials; this had an impact on the final COSs. It is important for COS developers to consider what they may be missing if they do not search the qualitative and grey literature
The Emergence of Radiation from Gravitational Potential Wells: The Absence of Effects
We consider a source of gravitational waves of frequency , located
near the center of a massive galaxy of mass and radius , with . In the case of a perfect fluid galaxy, and of odd-parity waves, there
is no direct matter-wave interaction and the propagation of the waves is
affected by the galaxy only through the curvature of the spacetime background
through which the waves propagate. We find that, in addition to the expected
redshift of the radiation emerging from the galaxy, there is a small amount of
backscatter, of order . We show that there is no suppression of
radiative power by the factor as has been recently predicted
by Kundu. The origin of Kundu's suppression lies in the interpretation of a
term in the expansion of the exterior field of the galaxy in inverse powers of
radius. It is shown why that term is not related to the source strength or to
