Congenital lobar emphysema: Is surgery routinely necessary?
Congenital lobar emphysema (CLE) is a rare congenital abnormality characterised by overinflation of a pulmonary lobe. Its aetiology is unknown. The management of CLE has traditionally been surgical. Anewborn boy with a birthweight of 2.5 kg was delivered at full-term by caesarian section due to food delivery. There was no marked respiratory distress at birth, and little meconium stained liquor was seen on the skin. Theinitial diagnosis was meconium aspiration syndrome. After computed tomography of the thorax, CLE was diagnosed. The patient was observed throughout for a week and the CT of the thorax was repeated, which revealed that the emphysema had resolved. The nonoperative approach should be considered in asymptomatic patients with CLE.Key words: Rare lung disease, thoracic surger
Attenuation of Vegetation and Snow on RF Wireless Communication
In this study, the attenuation in mobile communication due to snow and vegetation is simulated by using Discrete Propagation Model. The study includes simulation results according to different frequencies of propagating waves and moisture content of various vegetation and snow types. Results are compared with other studies
Isolated central nervous system relapse during cytologic and molecular hematologic remission in two patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia
Extramedullary involvement in the absence of bone marrow disease is rare in patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). We report two patients with APL who had central nervous system (CNS) relapse without evidence of cytologic and molecular disease of bone marrow after all-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA) treatment. Both of the patients were treated successfully with combination of intrathecal chemotherapy and radiotherapy with or without systemic chemotherapy. Although increasing number of cases with extramedullary involvement of APL after ATRA including therapy have been reported, further studies with a large series of patients are necessary to determine whether ATRA increases the risk of development of extramedullary involvement of disease in patients with APL
