Microbial load monitor
Attempts are made to provide a total design of a Microbial Load Monitor (MLM) system flight engineering model. Activities include assembly and testing of Sample Receiving and Card Loading Devices (SRCLDs), operator related software, and testing of biological samples in the MLM. Progress was made in assembling SRCLDs with minimal leaks and which operate reliably in the Sample Loading System. Seven operator commands are used to control various aspects of the MLM such as calibrating and reading the incubating reading head, setting the clock and reading time, and status of Card. Testing of the instrument, both in hardware and biologically, was performed. Hardware testing concentrated on SRCLDs. Biological testing covered 66 clinical and seeded samples. Superconductivity in an Einstein Solid AxV2Al20 (A = Al and Ga)
A cage compound AxV2Al20 (Al10V), that was called an Einstein solid by Caplin
and coworkers 40 years ago, is revisited to investigate the low-energy, local
vibrations of the A atoms and their influence on the electronic and
superconducting properties of the compound. Polycrystalline samples with A =
Al, Ga, Y, and La are studied through resistivity and heat capacity
measurements. Weak-coupling BCS superconductivity is observed below Tc = 1.49,
1.66, and 0.69 K for Ax = Al0.3, Ga0.2, and Y, respectively, but not above 0.4
K for Ax = La. Low-energy modes are detected only for A = Al and Ga, which are
approximately described by the Einstein model with Einstein temperatures of 24
and 8 K, respectively. A weak but significant coupling between the low-energy
modes, which are almost identical to those called rattling in recent study, and
conduction electrons manifests itself as anomalous enhancement in resistivity

Simulating melodic and harmonic expectations for tonal cadences using probabilistic models
<p>This study examines how the mind’s predictive mechanisms contribute to the perception of cadential closure during music listening. Using the Information Dynamics of Music model (or IDyOM) to simulate the formation of schematic expectations—a finite-context (or <i>n</i>-gram) model that predicts the next event in a musical stimulus by acquiring knowledge through unsupervised statistical learning of sequential structure—we predict the terminal melodic and harmonic events from 245 exemplars of the five most common cadence categories from the classical style. Our findings demonstrate that (1) terminal events from cadential contexts are more predictable than those from non-cadential contexts; (2) models of cadential strength advanced in contemporary cadence typologies reflect the formation of schematic expectations; and (3) a significant decrease in predictability follows the terminal note and chord events of the cadential formula.</p
Scarf\u27s Procedure for Integer Programming and a Dual Simplex Algorithm
Herbert Scarf has recently introduced an algorithm for integer programs based on the concept of primitive sets. We show that as the choice variables become continuous, this algorithm converges to a dual simplex algorithm. This result is robust in the sense that even before the limit is reached, the simplex path is contained in the primitive sets which define Scarf’s path to the solution of the integer program
Mapping the dynamic interactions between vortex species in highly anisotropic superconductors
Here we use highly sensitive magnetisation measurements performed using a
Hall probe sensor on single crystals of highly anisotropic high temperature
superconductors to study the dynamic interactions
between the two species of vortices that exist in such superconductors. We
observe a remarkable and clearly delineated high temperature regime that
mirrors the underlying vortex phase diagram. Our results map out the parameter
space over which these dynamic interaction processes can be used to create

Feasibility of evaluation of the natural history of kidney disease in the general population using electronic healthcare records
Background: Knowledge about the nature of long-term changes in kidney function in the general population is sparse. We aim to identify whether primary care electronic healthcare records capture sufficient information to study the natural history of kidney disease. /
Methods: The National Chronic Kidney Disease Audit database covers ∼14% of the population of England and Wales. Availability of repeat serum creatinine tests was evaluated by risk factors for chronic kidney disease (CKD) and individual changes over time in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) were estimated using linear regression. Sensitivity of estimation to method of evaluation of eGFR compared laboratory-reported eGFR and recalculated eGFR (using laboratory-reported creatinine), to uncover any impact of historical creatinine calibration issues on slope estimation. /
Results: Twenty-five per cent of all adults, 92% of diabetics and 96% of those with confirmed CKD had at least three creatinine tests, spanning a median of 5.7 years, 6.2 years and 6.1 years, respectively. Median changes in laboratory-reported eGFR (mL/min/1.73 m2/year) were −1.32 (CKD) and −0.60 (diabetes). Median changes in recalculated eGFR were −0.98 (CKD) and −0.11 (diabetes), underestimating decline. Magnitude of underestimation (and between-patient variation in magnitude) decreased with deteriorating eGFR. For CKD Stages 3, 4 and 5 (at latest eGFR), median slopes were −1.27, −2.49 and -3.87 for laboratory-reported eGFR and −0.89, −2.26 and −3.75 for recalculated eGFR. /
Conclusions: Evaluation of long-term changes in renal function will be possible in those at greatest risk if methods are identified to overcome creatinine calibration problems. Bias will be reduced by focussing on patients with confirmed CKD
First order magnetic transition in CeFe alloys: Phase-coexistence and metastability
First order ferromagnetic (FM) to antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase transition in
doped-CeFe alloys is studied with micro-Hall probe technique. Clear visual
evidence of magnetic phase-coexistence on micrometer scales and the evolution
of this phase-coexistence as a function of temperature, magnetic field and time
across the first order FM-AFM transition is presented. Such phase-coexistence
and metastability arise as natural consequence of an intrinsic
disorder-influenced first order transition. Generality of this phenomena
