    Diffusion bonding of IN 718 to VM 350 grade maraging steel

    Diffusion bonding studies have been conducted on IN 718, VM 350 and the dissimilar alloy couple, IN 718 to maraging steel. The experimental processing parameters critical to obtaining consistently good diffusion bonds between IN 718 and VM 350 were determined. Interrelationships between temperature, pressure and surface preparation were explored for short bending intervals under vacuum conditions. Successful joining was achieved for a range of bonding cycle temperatures, pressures and surface preparations. The strength of the weaker parent material was used as a criterion for a successful tensile test of the heat treated bond. Studies of VM-350/VM-350 couples in the as-bonded condition showed a greater yielding and failure outside the bond region

    Complementarity of perturbations driving insulator-to-metal transition in a charge ordered manganite

    Modulation of charge carrier dynamics and hence electrical conductivity of solids by photoexcitation has been a rich field of research with numerous applications. Similarly, electric and magnetic field assisted enhancement of conductivity are of fundamental importance and technological use. Hole doped manganites of the type (A1−x_{1-x}Bx)_{x})MnO3_{3}, where A and B are rare and alkaline earth metals respectively have the distinction of showing all three effects. Here we establish the complementarity of the electric, magnetic and photon fields in driving an insulator-metal transition in epitaxial thin films of La0.175_{0.175}Pr0.45_{0.45}Ca0.375_{0.375}MnO3_{3} whose electrical ground state is insulating. Both pulsed and CW lasers cause a giant photon flux dependent enhancement of conductivity. It is further observed that electric and magnetic fields trigger the persistent enhancement of conductivity whose magnitude can be accentuated by application of these fields in parallel.Comment: 17 pages 6 figure

    Electronic Structure of Superconducting Ba6c60

    We report the results of first-principles electronic-structure calculations for superconducting Ba6C60.     Clustering in Hilbert space of a quantum optimization problem

    The solution space of many classical optimization problems breaks up into clusters which are extensively distant from one another in the Hamming metric. Here, we show that an analogous quantum clustering phenomenon takes place in the ground state subspace of a certain quantum optimization problem. This involves extending the notion of clustering to Hilbert space, where the classical Hamming distance is not immediately useful. Quantum clusters correspond to macroscopically distinct subspaces of the full quantum ground state space which grow with the system size. We explicitly demonstrate that such clusters arise in the solution space of random quantum satisfiability (3-QSAT) at its satisfiability transition. We estimate both the number of these clusters and their internal entropy. The former are given by the number of hardcore dimer coverings of the core of the interaction graph, while the latter is related to the underconstrained degrees of freedom not touched by the dimers. We additionally provide new numerical evidence suggesting that the 3-QSAT satisfiability transition may coincide with the product satisfiability transition, which would imply the absence of an intermediate entangled satisfiable phase.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure

    Mass of the black hole in the Seyfert 1.5 galaxy H 0507+164 from reverberation mapping

    We present the results of our optical monitoring campaign of the X-ray source H 0507+164, a low luminosity Seyfert 1.5 galaxy at a redshift z = 0.018. Spectroscopic observations were carried out during 22 nights in 2007, from the 21 of November to the 26 of December. Photometric observations in the R-band for 13 nights were also obtained during the same period. The continuum and broad line fluxes of the galaxy were found to vary during our monitoring period. The R-band differential light curve with respect to a companion star also shows a similar variability. Using cross correlation analysis, we estimated a time delay of 3.01 days (in the rest frame), of the response of the broad H-beta line fluxes to the variations in the optical continuum at 5100 angstroms. Using this time delay and the width of the H-beta line, we estimated the radius for the Broad Line Region (BLR) of 2.53 x 10^{-3} parsec, and a black hole mass of 9.62 x 10^{6} solar mass.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRA
