Developing Critical Social Justice Literacy in an Online Seminar
The purpose of this article is to report on an effort to cultivate a critical social justice perspective and critical social justice praxis among educators enrolled in an online graduate program. Although the entire program was organized around themes of equity, collaboration, and leadership, this study focused on educatorsâ perspectives of the purposes, pedagogy, and outcomes of one course, Critical Pedagogy. Fourteen of the 19 students enrolled in the online course participated in one of six online focus groups following the conclusion of the course. Using constructivist grounded theory methods, the researchers identified the different ways in which students responded to the course, what they learned, and how they enacted their learning as well as the features of the course that the students believed contributed to their learning and practice. The study provides insight into features of online pedagogy that appear to facilitate transformative learning. It further provides insight into the kinds of content and assignments that may promote critical social justice praxis among educators

Impact of Gene-Gender Effects of Adrenergic Polymorphisms on Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis Activity in Depressed Patients
Objective: There is overwhelming evidence that activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) system plays a major role in depression and cardiovascular disease in genetically susceptible individuals. We hypothesized that due to the multiple interactions between the sympathetic and the HPA systems via adrenoceptors, polymorphisms in these genes could have an impact on HPA axis activity in major depression. Methods: Using the dexamethasone/corticotrophin-releasing hormone (DEX/CRH) test, we investigated the association of alpha 2-adrenoceptor (ADRA2A -1291C -> G) and the beta 2-adrenoceptor gene (ADRB2 Arg16Gly) in 189 patients with major depression during the acute state of the disease and after remission. Results: Male ADRA2A -1291G allele homozygotes showed significant pretreatment HPA axis hyperactivity, with increased adrenocorticotropin (ACTH; F = 4.9, d.f. = 2, p = 0.009) and cortisol responses (F = 6.4, d.f. = 2, p = 0.003). In contrast, female ADRB2 Arg/Arg homozygotes had increased pretreatment ACTH (F = 7.17, d.f. = 2, p = 0.001) and cortisol (F = 8.95, d.f. = 2, p = 0.000) levels. Interestingly, in the respective genotypes, the stress hormones remained elevated in the second DEX/CRH test, despite a reduction in depressive symptoms. Conclusions: This study provides evidence that, depending on gender and polymorphisms, there is continuous HPA axis overdrive in a proportion of patients irrespective of the status of depression. Considering the importance of stress hormones for cardiovascular disorders, our data might suggest that these patients are at high risk of comorbidity between depression and cardiovascular disorders. Better Synchronizability Predicted by Crossed Double Cycle
In this brief report, we propose a network model named crossed double cycles,
which are completely symmetrical and can be considered as the extensions of
nearest-neighboring lattices. The synchronizability, measured by eigenratio
, can be sharply enhanced by adjusting the only parameter, crossed length
. The eigenratio is shown very sensitive to the average distance ,
and the smaller average distance will lead to better synchronizability.
Furthermore, we find that, in a wide interval, the eigenratio approximately

Comparisons of procedures for modifying question-asking behavior of mildly retarded children
Questioning is one form of information-seeking behavior. Skinner (1957) has classified question-asking behavior as a mand. As such, a question specifies its own reinforcer, which is the answer. For example, the question, "What is your name?" is reinforced by the answer, "My name is Andy." Making additional reinforcing consequences contingent upon question-asking should also tend to increase the rate of the target response class. An alternative viewpoint on questioning behavior is proposed by Allender (1969) who writes that 'search behavior' is maintained by intrinsic factors. This theory seems to indicate that manipulating consequent events to questioning would not influence the rate of the behavior. The early research on questioning behavior with children consisted primarily of observational studies (Piaget, 1926; Yamamoto, 1962). Yamamoto (1962) has shown that with children the rate of questioning tends to increase with age. Stirling (1937) found that the rate of questioning behavior was positively correlated with IQ level
The effects of manipulating objects in modeling films on imitative response topographies
Imitative responding has been the focus of considerable theoretical and research attention. Many studies have dealt with variables which are associated with response matching following the observation of a modeling sequence. However, recent research strategies have restricted the availability of stimuli to which an imitater could respond and limited the responses under direct observation. In addition, previous research has not analyzed modeling sequences by examining which components of a modeled stimulus sequence are functionally related to subsequent behaviors. The present study varied several components of a modeled stimulus sequence and permitted topographical variety within the imitative response class to be emitted in a subsequent testing environment
Collective labor relations and juridification: a marriage proposal
Contributing to debates over relations between the collective and juridified regulation of labor, this article analyzes a rich case study in the Israeli construction sector to claim that juridification can spur unions and employersâ associations to initiate strategic and inclusive change. By subsuming processes of juridification into traditional IR frameworks and embracing its logic and practices, the corporatist social partners broaden the relevance of collective labor relations to workers otherwise excluded from direct union representation. In this way, while not increasing union density or improving wages, these âtraditionalâ IR actors reassert their monopolistic control over worker and employer representation, as well as over the sectoral labor market
