    Prevalence and Correlates of HIV and Hepatitis C Virus Infections and Risk Behaviors among Malaysian Fishermen

    Fishermen in Southeast Asia have been found to be highly vulnerable to HIV, with research evidence highlighting the role of sexual risk behaviors. This study aims to estimate the rate of HIV as well as hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections among Malaysian fishermen, and the risky sexual and injection drug use behaviors that may contribute to these infections. The study also includes an assessment of socio-demographic, occupational and behavioral correlates of testing positive for HIV or HCV, and socio-demographic and occupational correlates of risk behaviors. The study had a cross-sectional design and recruited 406 fishermen through respondent-driven sampling (RDS). Participants self-completed a questionnaire and provided biological specimens for HIV and HCV testing. We conducted and compared results of analyses of both unweighted data and data weighted with the Respondent-Driven Sampling Analysis Tool (RDSAT). Of the participating fishermen, 12.4% were HIV positive and 48.6% had HCV infection. Contrary to expectations and findings from previous research, most fishermen (77.1%) were not sexually active. More than a third had a history of injection drug use, which often occurred during fishing trips on commercial vessels and during longer stays at sea. Of the fishermen who injected drugs, 42.5% reported unsafe injection practices in the past month. Reporting a history of injection drug use increased the odds of testing HIV positive by more than 6 times (AOR = 6.22, 95% CIs [2.74, 14.13]). Most fishermen who injected drugs tested positive for HCV. HCV infection was significantly associated with injection drug use, being older than 25 years, working on a commercial vessel and spending four or more days at sea per fishing trip. There is an urgent need to strengthen current harm reduction and drug treatment programs for Malaysian fishermen who inject drugs, especially among fishermen who work on commercial vessels and engage in deep-sea fishing

    Active Brownian Particles. From Individual to Collective Stochastic Dynamics

    We review theoretical models of individual motility as well as collective dynamics and pattern formation of active particles. We focus on simple models of active dynamics with a particular emphasis on nonlinear and stochastic dynamics of such self-propelled entities in the framework of statistical mechanics. Examples of such active units in complex physico-chemical and biological systems are chemically powered nano-rods, localized patterns in reaction-diffusion system, motile cells or macroscopic animals. Based on the description of individual motion of point-like active particles by stochastic differential equations, we discuss different velocity-dependent friction functions, the impact of various types of fluctuations and calculate characteristic observables such as stationary velocity distributions or diffusion coefficients. Finally, we consider not only the free and confined individual active dynamics but also different types of interaction between active particles. The resulting collective dynamical behavior of large assemblies and aggregates of active units is discussed and an overview over some recent results on spatiotemporal pattern formation in such systems is given.Comment: 161 pages, Review, Eur Phys J Special-Topics, accepte

    Mass migration of locusts is an economically devastating and poorly understood phenomenon. Locust mass migration often follows rapid population growth because individuals must move to find new sources of locally depleted resources. In Mormon crickets and Desert locusts, cannibalistic interactions have been revealed as the driving force behind collective mass movement. Locusts are known to compensate for nutrient deficiencies and they themselves are a good source of nutrients such as protein. However, direct empirical evidence for an adaptive benefit of cannibalism in migratory bands has been lacking. Here, we first show that Australian plague locusts, Chortoicetes terminifera, will cannibalise vulnerable conspecifics to compensate for protein deprivation, supporting the notion that cannibalistic interactions among nutritionally deprived individuals drives collective mass movement. We then show that individuals in a group with the opportunity to cannibalise survive longer and move more than individuals without the opportunity to cannibalise. These results provide empirical support for the ‘lifeboat mechanism’, which proposes that cannibalism offers the dual benefits to individuals in a group of surviving longer and travelling farther than a solitary individual without the opportunity to cannibalise.Matthew J.     Vortex formation and foraging in polyphenic spadefoot toad tadpoles

    Animal aggregations are widespread in nature and can exhibit complex emergent properties not found at an individual level. We investigate one such example here, collective vortex formation by congeneric spadefoot toad tadpoles: Spea bombifrons and S. multiplicata. Tadpoles of these species develop into either an omnivorous or a carnivorous (cannibalistic) morph depending on diet. Previous studies show S. multiplicata are more likely to develop into omnivores and feed on suspended organic matter in the water body. The omnivorous morph is frequently social, forming aggregates that move and forage together, and form vortices in which they adopt a distinctive slowly-rotating circular formation. This behaviour has been speculated to act as a means to agitate the substratum in ponds and thus could be a collective foraging strategy. Here we perform a quantitative investigation of the behaviour of tadpoles within aggregates. We found that only S. multiplicata groups exhibited vortex formation, suggesting that social interactions differ between species. The probability of collectively forming a vortex, in response to introduced food particles, increased for higher tadpole densities and when tadpoles were hungry. Individuals inside a vortex moved faster and exhibited higher (by approximately 27%) tailbeat frequencies than those outside the vortex, thus incurring a personal energetic cost. The resulting environmental modification, however, suggests vortex behaviour may be an adaptation to actively create, and exploit, a resource patch within the environment.publishe

    HIV Testing and Counseling at U.S. Substance Use Treatment Facilities: A Missed Opportunity for Early Identification.

    ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to determine the availability and national distribution of HIV testing and counseling at substance use treatment facilities in the United States.MethodsAnalyses of data from the 2018 National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services assessed HIV testing and counseling availability in U.S. substance use treatment facilities (excluding those in U.S. territories). Facilities were subcategorized by availability of mental health services and medication for opioid use disorders and compared by using logistic models. Descriptive statistics were calculated to characterize the availability of HIV testing and counseling by state, state HIV incidence, and facility characteristics.ResultsAmong U.S. substance use treatment facilities (N=14,691), 29% offered HIV testing, 53% offered HIV counseling, 23% offered both, and 41% offered neither. Across states, the proportions of facilities offering HIV testing ranged from 9.0% to 62.8%, and the proportion offering counseling ranged from 19.2% to 83.3%. In only three states was HIV testing offered by at least 50% of facilities. HIV testing was significantly more likely to be offered in facilities that offered medication for opioid use disorder (48.0% versus 16.0% in those not offering such medication) or mental health services (31.2% versus 24.1% in those not offering such services). Higher state-level HIV incidence was related to an increased proportion of facilities offering HIV testing.ConclusionsOnly three in 10 substance use treatment facilities offered HIV testing in 2018. This finding represents a missed opportunity for early identification of HIV among people receiving treatment for substance use disorders
