What is Green? A Case on Selected Companies

    Get PDF
More companies are going green. They believe that greening the business is their responsibility and is simply the right thing to do. It benefits not only the company but also the consumers. Since the substance of the green business concept is rather ambiguous, it is difficult to evaluate whether a green claim is correct and is not a greenwash. The study tries to find out the understanding of companies conducting green practices on green business. It aims specifically to explore to what extent they know about green business and whether their practices are accordingly green. It is a case study on three Indonesian companies identified as conducting green practices. Data were gathered through interviews of the owner-manager or the representative of the companies. The study shows that the understanding on green business still varies and reasons underlying their green practices are commitment of not to harm the environment. In the beginning, they did not realize if what they have done are green practices. Knowing the benefits of being green can be the motivation for being green. Disseminating the laws is thus important. Keywords: green business, green practice, green claim, green product, Indonesi

Chairless Chairs for Orthopedic Surgery Purpose – A Literature Review

Musculoskeletal disorders are often found in various types of work, including surgeons. Standing working position is immobile and rigid when performing surgical operations. The equipment used is less ergonomic which is the main parameter. The surgeon profession belongs to the category of the high-risk profession and has the potential to experience musculoskeletal disorders. Surgeons who suffer musculoskeletal disorders sense disease start from mild-to-severe due to the muscles receiving static loads frequently in the long-term. The emergence of musculoskeletal disorders can be caused by working environment conditions and standing position while working, causing injury to joints, vertebral discs, nerves, cartilage, tendons, and muscles. This paper describes in extensive the potential for reducing musculoskeletal problems with the use of a chairless chair for surgeons in carrying out operations. Musculoskeletal problems in surgery and the use of chairless chairs have been further explored to close the existing research gap

RNAalifold: improved consensus structure prediction for RNA alignments

Abstract

Background

The prediction of a consensus structure for a set of related RNAs is an important first step for subsequent analyses. RNAalifold, which computes the minimum energy structure that is simultaneously formed by a set of aligned sequences, is one of the oldest and most widely used tools for this task. In recent years, several alternative approaches have been advocated, pointing to several shortcomings of the original RNAalifold approach.

Results

We show that the accuracy of RNAalifold predictions can be improved substantially by introducing a different, more rational handling of alignment gaps, and by replacing the rather simplistic model of covariance scoring with more sophisticated RIBOSUM-like scoring matrices. These improvements are achieved without compromising the computational efficiency of the algorithm. We show here that the new version of RNAalifold not only outperforms the old one, but also several other tools recently developed, on different datasets.

Conclusion

The new version of RNAalifold not only can replace the old one for almost any application but it is also competitive with other approaches including those based on SCFGs, maximum expected accuracy, or hierarchical nearest neighbor classifiers.</p

Detection of SARS-CoV-2 variant 501Y.V2 in Comoros Islands in January 2021 [version 1; peer review: 2 approved]

Background. Genomic data is key in understanding the spread and evolution of SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and informing the design and evaluation of interventions. However, SARS-CoV-2 genomic data remains scarce across Africa, with no reports yet from the Indian Ocean islands. Methods. We genome sequenced six SARS-CoV-2 positive samples from the first major infection wave in the Union of Comoros in January 2021 and undertook detailed phylogenetic analysis. Results. All the recovered six genomes classified within the 501Y.V2 variant of concern (also known as lineage B.1.351) and appeared to be from 2 sub-clusters with the most recent common ancestor dated 30th Oct-2020 (95% Credibility Interval: 06th Sep-2020 to 10th Dec-2020). Comparison of the Comoros genomes with those of 501Y.V2 variant of concern from other countries deposited into the GISAID database revealed their close association with viruses identified in France and Mayotte (part of the Comoros archipelago and a France, Overseas Department). Conclusions. The recovered genomes, albeit few, confirmed local transmission following probably multiple introductions of the SARS-CoV-2 501Y.V2 variant of concern during the Comoros’s first major COVID-19 wave. These findings demonstrate the importance of genomic surveillance and have implications for ongoing control strategies on the islands
