Evaporation and Step Edge Diffusion in MBE
Using kinetic Monte-Carlo simulations of a Solid-on-Solid model we
investigate the influence of step edge diffusion (SED) and evaporation on
Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE). Based on these investigations we propose two
strategies to optimize MBE-growth. The strategies are applicable in different
growth regimes: during layer-by-layer growth one can reduce the desorption rate
using a pulsed flux. In three-dimensional (3D) growth the SED can help to grow
large, smooth structures. For this purpose the flux has to be reduced with time

p-Type doping of II-VI heterostructures from surface states: application to ferromagnetic CdMnTe quantum wells
We present a study of p-type doping of CdTe and CdMnTe quantum
wells from surface states. We show that this method is as efficient as usual
modulation doping with nitrogen acceptors, and leads to hole densities
exceeding cm. Surface doping was successfully applied
to obtain carrier-induced ferromagnetism in a CdMnTe quantum well.
The observed temperature dependence of photoluminescence spectra, and the
critical temperature, correspond well to those previously reported for
ferromagnetic quantum wells doped with nitrogen.Comment: 4 figure
Biomass (yard waste) Suspensions as Alternative Daily Cover Material for Landfills
Biomass makes up approximately 16% of the landfills (this number can vary significantly depending upon the geographical location and time of the year). A majority of the biomass disposed in landfills is comprised of yard waste including grass and leaf clippings. This is becoming a problem as most landfills are running out of space and it is expensive to build new landfills. Twenty-four states have prohibited the disposal of yard waste in landfills with more states likely to follow suit. To conserve landfill space it is important to identify processes and methods for effective utilization and disposal of yard waste. It has been shown in this research that conformal coating of a biomass suspension can be utilized as an alternative daily cover (ADC) for the landfills. The biomass is ground into fine particles (d ≤ 2 mm) and suspended in a surfactant solution. This approach can reduce the cost of daily operations for the landfill and provide a solution to the problem of yard waste disposal
Light and electric field control of ferromagnetism in magnetic quantum structures
A strong influence of illumination and electric bias on the Curie temperature
and saturation value of the magnetization is demonstrated for semiconductor
structures containing a modulation-doped p-type Cd0.96Mn0.04Te quantum well
placed in various built-in electric fields. It is shown that both light beam
and bias voltage generate an isothermal and reversible cross-over between the
paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phases, in the way that is predetermined by the
structure design. The observed behavior is in quantitative agreement with the
expectations for systems, in which ferromagnetic interactions are mediated by
the weakly disordered two-dimensional hole liquid.Comment: 4 pages and 3 figure
Optical frequency measurement of the 1S-3S two-photon transition in hydrogen
This article reports the first optical frequency measurement of the
transition in hydrogen. The excitation of this
transition occurs at a wavelength of 205 nm which is obtained with two
frequency doubling stages of a titanium sapphire laser at 820 nm. Its frequency
is measured with an optical frequency comb. The second-order Doppler effect is
evaluated from the observation of the motional Stark effect due to a transverse
magnetic field perpendicular to the atomic beam. The measured value of the
frequency splitting is with a relative uncertainty of
. After the measurement of the
frequency, this result is the most precise of the optical frequencies in
hydrogen

A framework for estimating society’s economic welfare following the introduction of an animal disease: the case of Johne’s disease
Animal diseases are global issues affecting the productivity and financial profitability of affected farms. Johne’s disease is distributed on farms worldwide and is an endemic contagious bacterial infection in ruminants caused by Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis. In cattle, the clinical disease manifests itself as chronic enteritis resulting in reduced production, weight loss, and eventually death. Johne’s disease is prevalent in the UK, including Scotland. Direct costs and losses associated with Johne’s disease have been estimated in previous research, confirming an important economic impact of the disease in UK herds. Despite this, the distributional impact of Johne’s disease among milk consumers and producers in Scotland has not been estimated. In this paper, we evaluate the change in society’s economic welfare, namely to dairy producers (i.e. infected and uninfected herds) and milk consumers in Scotland induced by the introduction of Johne’s disease in the national Scottish dairy herd. At the national-level, we conclude that the economic burden falls mainly on producers of infected herds and, to a lesser extent, milk consumers, while producers of uninfected herds benefit from the presence of Johne’s. An infected producer’s loss per cow is approximately two times larger in magnitude than that of an uninfected producer’s gain. Such economic welfare estimates are an important comparison of the relative costs of national herd prevalence and the wider economic welfare implications for both producers and consumers. This is particularly important from a policy, public good, cost sharing, and human health perspective. The economic welfare framework presented in this paper can be applied to other diseases to examine the relative burden of society’s economic welfare of alternative livestock disease scenarios. In addition, the sensitivity analysis evaluates uncertainty in economic welfare given limited data and uncertainty in the national herd prevalence, and other input parameters, associated with Johne’s disease in Scotland. Therefore, until the prevalence of Johne’s is better understood, the full economic cost to Scottish dairy herds remains uncertain but in the meantime the sensitivity analysis evaluates the robustness of economic welfare to such uncertainties

Hybrid atomic models for spectroscopic plasma diagnostics
We propose a hybrid approach to treating atomic structure and rates in collisional-radiative models, combining the completeness of highly averaged models with the accuracy of detailed models. The hybrid scheme supplements a small subset of coronally accessible fine structure levels with a complete set of configuration- and superconfiguration-averaged levels and produces spectra based on transitions among a mix of fine-structure and relativistic configuration-averaged levels. Convenient expressions are given for obtaining rates between the fine structure and averaged levels and a technique for propagating configuration interaction from the fine structure calculations to configuration averages is described. We present results from a trial hybrid model of germanium which demonstrate the accuracy of the hybrid model for charge state distributions and spectra
Unconventional MBE Strategies from Computer Simulations for Optimized Growth Conditions
We investigate the influence of step edge diffusion (SED) and desorption on
Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) using kinetic Monte-Carlo simulations of the
solid-on-solid (SOS) model. Based on these investigations we propose two
strategies to optimize MBE growth. The strategies are applicable in different
growth regimes: During layer-by-layer growth one can exploit the presence of
desorption in order to achieve smooth surfaces. By additional short high flux
pulses of particles one can increase the growth rate and assist layer-by-layer
growth. If, however, mounds are formed (non-layer-by-layer growth) the SED can
be used to control size and shape of the three-dimensional structures. By
controlled reduction of the flux with time we achieve a fast coarsening

Recurrent Modification of a Conserved Cis-Regulatory Element Underlies Fruit Fly Pigmentation Diversity
The development of morphological traits occurs through the collective action of networks of genes connected at the level of gene expression. As any node in a network may be a target of evolutionary change, the recurrent targeting of the same node would indicate that the path of evolution is biased for the relevant trait and network. Although examples of parallel evolution have implicated recurrent modification of the same gene and cis-regulatory element (CRE), little is known about the mutational and molecular paths of parallel CRE evolution. In Drosophila melanogaster fruit flies, the Bric-à -brac (Bab) transcription factors control the development of a suite of sexually dimorphic traits on the posterior abdomen. Female-specific Bab expression is regulated by the dimorphic element, a CRE that possesses direct inputs from body plan (ABD-B) and sex-determination (DSX) transcription factors. Here, we find that the recurrent evolutionary modification of this CRE underlies both intraspecific and interspecific variation in female pigmentation in the melanogaster species group. By reconstructing the sequence and regulatory activity of the ancestral Drosophila melanogaster dimorphic element, we demonstrate that a handful of mutations were sufficient to create independent CRE alleles with differing activities. Moreover, intraspecific and interspecific dimorphic element evolution proceeded with little to no alterations to the known body plan and sex-determination regulatory linkages. Collectively, our findings represent an example where the paths of evolution appear biased to a specific CRE, and drastic changes in function were accompanied by deep conservation of key regulatory linkages. © 2013 Rogers et al
