Assessment of SPLAT formulations to control Grapholita molesta (Lepidoptera:Tortricidae) in a Brazilian apple orchard.
Mating disruption is a technique that uses synthetic copies of sex pheromones to control insect pests. We aimed to control Oriental fruit moth (OFM) Grapholita molesta (Busck) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) with formulations of SPLAT Grafo (SG) and SPLAT Grafo Attract and Kill (SGAK) in small (1 ha) apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) orchards. Our experiment was conducted in a commercial orchard with Gala trees (spacing 1.5 × 4.5 m) in Vacaria, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. We evaluated the effect of four treatments on G. molesta population densities: a) SG at 1 kg ha-1 (300 point sources of 3.3 g each), b) SGAK at 1 kg ha-1 (1000 point sources of 1 g each), c) insecticides as recommended by Integrated Apple Production (IAP), and d) untreated control (no treatment). Specialized Pheromone and Lure Application Technology (SPLAT) treatments were applied on 1 August 2004 and reapplied after 120 d (1 December 2004). The treatment effect was evaluated by weekly counts of males captured in Delta traps baited with commercial synthetic sex pheromone lures (eight traps per treatment). We assessed fruit damage caused by G. molesta in eight replicates of 200 fruits each on 26 October, 30 November 2004, and 5 and 31 January 2005. Applying 1 kg ha-1 of SG and SGAK in August and December 2004 significantly reduced the number of male moths caught in Delta traps. Damage to fruits at harvest, however, did not differ significantly from the control. This indicates a decline in the efficacy of mating disruption when SG and SGAK are used to protect small areas (1 ha) under high Oriental fruit moth pressure
Genetic deletion of osteopontin in TRAMP mice skews prostate carcinogenesis from adenocarcinoma to aggressive human-like neuroendocrine cancers
Osteopontin (OPN) is a secreted glycoprotein, that belongs to the non-structural extracellular matrix (ECM), and its over expression in human prostate cancer has been associated with disease progression, androgen independence and metastatic ability. Nevertheless, the pathophysiology of OPN in prostate tumorigenesis has never been studied. We crossed TRansgenic Adenocarcinoma of the Mouse Prostate (TRAMP) mice with OPN deficient (OPN-/-) mice and followed tumor onset and progression in these double mutants. Ultrasound examination detected the early onset of a rapidly growing, homogeneous and spherical tumor in about 60% of OPN-/- TRAMP mice. Such neoplasms seldom occurred in parental TRAMP mice otherwise prone to adenocarcinomas and were characterized for being androgen receptor negative, highly proliferative and endowed with neuroendocrine (NE) features. Gene expression profiling showed up-regulation of genes involved in tumor progression, cell cycle and neuronal differentiation in OPN-deficient versus wild type TRAMP tumors. Downregulated genes included key genes of TGFa pathway, including SMAD3 and Filamin, which were confirmed at the protein level. Furthermore, NE genes and particularly those characterizing early prostatic lesions of OPN-deficient mice were found to correlate with those of human prostate NE tumours. These data underscore a novel role of OPN in the early stages of prostate cancer growth, protecting against the development of aggressive NE tumors
Faunistic analysis of Gyponini (Cicadellidae: Iassinae: Gyponini), collected in plum orchards located in the municipality of Videira, Santa Catarina, Brazil.
Gyponini has a wide distribution in the Americas and high abundance in plum orchards in southern Brazil. However, there is not much information regarding the economic importance and potential as vectors of microorganisms for the culture of plum. The purpose of this study was to perform the faunistic analysis of Gyponini in two plum orchards, variety ?Letícia?. The orchards are located in the municipality of Videira, state of Santa Catarina, Brazil (orchard #1 - 27º03?18??S; 51º08?46??O, orchard #2 - 27º02?05??S; 51º08?57??O). Each area contains 1 hectare and plants aged 10 years. Sampling was carried out from December 2010 to December 2012 using yellow sticky cards (8.5 x 11.5 cm), installed in 10 equidistant points (35 x 35 m). At each point, two traps were installed and replaced monthly; low (B) at 0.5 m above the ground and high (A) at 1.7 m above the ground. Eleven species belonging to Gyponini were identified: Curtara sp. (13), C. samera (3), Gypona sp. (14), G. acuta (9), G. parvula (5), G. sellata (2), G. stalina (1), G. validana (1), Polana sp. (3), Reticana lineata (1) and Sordana sordida (1). A total of 53 individuals were collected in the orchards. The highest rate of capture has occurred in the trap B, totaling 31 specimens, and only 22 individuals on the trap A. The dominant species were Curtara sp., Gypona sp., G. acuta and G. parvula with respective frequencies of 24.53%, 26.43%, 17% and 9.43%. There was no occurrence of constant species, only accessory and accidental species. Curtara sp. and G. acuta were caught predominantly in the lower traps. G. parvula showed higher capture rate in traps located in the upper part of plant canopy and Gypona sp. showed a similar distribution among the different heights. It is emphasized that this collecting method allowed identifying the most active species in relation to the stratum of the culture, as well as the abundance of the group in the orchards

On the Easy Use of Scientific Computing Services for Large Scale Linear Algebra and Parallel Decision Making with the P-Grade Portal
International audienceScientific research is becoming increasingly dependent on the large-scale analysis of data using distributed computing infrastructures (Grid, cloud, GPU, etc.). Scientific computing (Petitet et al. 1999) aims at constructing mathematical models and numerical solution techniques for solving problems arising in science and engineering. In this paper, we describe the services of an integrated portal based on the P-Grade (Parallel Grid Run-time and Application Development Environment) portal (http://www.p-grade.hu) that enables the solution of large-scale linear systems of equations using direct solvers, makes easier the use of parallel block iterative algorithm and provides an interface for parallel decision making algorithms. The ultimate goal is to develop a single sign on integrated multi-service environment providing an easy access to different kind of mathematical calculations and algorithms to be performed on hybrid distributed computing infrastructures combining the benefits of large clusters, Grid or cloud, when needed
