    Managing standards compliance

    Software engineering standards determine practices that `compliant' software processes shall follow. standards generally define practices in terms of constraints that must hold for documents. The document types identified by standards include typical development products, such as user requirements, and also process-oriented documents, such as progress reviews and management reports. The degree of standards compliance can be established by checking these documents against the constraints. It is neither practical nor desirable to enforce compliance at all points in the development process. Thus compliance must be managed rather than imposed. We outline a model of standards and compliance and illustrate it with some examples. We give a brief account of the notations we have developed tosupport the use of the model and describe a support environment we have constructed. We contrast our approach to related work and discuss the broader implications of our findings for process modelling and the management of inconsistent information

    Extragalactic gamma-ray background from AGN winds and star-forming galaxies in cosmological galaxy formation models

    We derive the contribution to the extragalactic gamma-ray background (EGB) from AGN winds and star-forming galaxies by including a physical model for the gamma-ray emission produced by relativistic protons accelerated by AGN-driven and supernova-driven shocks into a state-of-the-art semi-analytic model of galaxy formation. This is based on galaxy interactions as triggers of AGN accretion and starburst activity and on expanding blast wave as the mechanism to communicate outwards the energy injected into the interstellar medium by the active nucleus. We compare the model predictions with the latest measurement of the EGB spectrum performed by the Fermi-LAT in the range between 100 MeV and 820 GeV. We find that AGN winds can provide ~35±\pm15% of the observed EGB in the energy interval E_{\gamma}=0.1-1 GeV, for ~73±\pm15% at E_{\gamma}=1-10 GeV, and for ~60±\pm20% at E_{\gamma}>10 GeV. The AGN wind contribution to the EGB is predicted to be larger by a factor of 3-5 than that provided by star-forming galaxies (quiescent plus starburst) in the hierarchical clustering scenario. The cumulative gamma-ray emission from AGN winds and blazars can account for the amplitude and spectral shape of the EGB, assuming the standard acceleration theory, and AGN wind parameters that agree with observations. We also compare the model prediction for the cumulative neutrino background from AGN winds with the most recent IceCube data. We find that for AGN winds with accelerated proton spectral index p=2.2-2.3, and taking into account internal absorption of gamma-rays, the Fermi-LAT and IceCube data could be reproduced simultaneously.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in A&

    Non-factorizable contributions to Bd0ˉDs()Ds()ˉ\bar{B^0_d} \to D_s^{(*)} \bar{D_s^{(*)}}

    It is pointed out that decays of the type BDDˉB \to D \bar{D} have no factorizable contributions, unless at least one of the charmed mesons in the final state is a vector meson. The dominant contributions to the decay amplitudes arise from chiral loop contributions and tree level amplitudes generated by soft gluon emissions forming a gluon condensate. We predict that the branching ratios for the processes Bˉ0Ds+Ds\bar B^0 \to D_s^+ D_s^-, Bˉ0Ds+Ds\bar B^0 \to D_s^{+*} D_s^- and Bˉ0Ds+Ds\bar B^0 \to D_s^+ D_s^{-*} are all of order (34)×104(3- 4) \times 10^{-4}, while Bˉ0Ds+Ds\bar B^0 \to D_s^{+*} D_s^{-*} has a branching ratio 5 to 10 times bigger.     After the launch and successful beginning of operations of the FERMI satellite, the topics related to high-energy observations of gamma-ray bursts have obtained a considerable attention by the scientific community. Undoubtedly, the diagnostic power of high-energy observations in constraining the emission processes and the physical conditions of gamma-ray burst is relevant. We briefly discuss how gamma-ray burst observations with ground-based imaging array Cerenkov telescopes, in the GeV-TeV range, can compete and cooperate with FERMI observations, in the MeV-GeV range, to allow researchers to obtain a more detailed and complete picture of the prompt and afterglow phases of gamma-ray bursts.Comment: 9 pages, two figures.     The Physics of K0Kˉ0K^0 -\bar K^0 Mixing: B^K\widehat{B}_K and ΔMLS\Delta M_{LS} in the Chiral Quark Model

    We compute the B^K\widehat B_K parameter and the mass difference ΔMLS\Delta M_{LS} of the K0Kˉ0K^0-\bar K^0 system by means of the chiral quark model. The chiral coefficients of the relevant ΔS=2\Delta S=2 and ΔS=1\Delta S=1 chiral lagrangians are computed via quark-loop integration. We include the relevant effects of one-loop corrections in chiral perturbation theory. The final result is very sensitive to non-factorizable corrections of O(αSN)O(\alpha_S N) coming from gluon condensation. The size of the gluon condensate is determined by fitting the experimental value of the amplitude K+π+π0K^+ \to \pi^+\pi^0. By varying all the relevant parameters we obtain B^K=0.87±0.33 .\widehat{B}_K= 0.87 \pm 0.33\ . We evaluate within the model the long-distance contributions to ΔMLS\Delta M_{LS} induced by the double insertion of the ΔS=1\Delta S = 1 chiral lagrangian and study the interplay between short- and long-distance amplitudes. By varying all parameters we obtain ΔMLSth/ΔMLSexp=0.760.34+0.64.\Delta M_{LS}^{th}/\Delta M_{LS}^{exp} = 0.76 ^{+0.64}_{-0.34} . Finally, we investigate the phenomenological constraints on the Kobayashi-Maskawa parameter Im λt\lambda _t entering the determination of ϵ/ϵ\epsilon'/\epsilon.Comment: 31 pages, Latex file including 7 eps figures.     No equity, no triple aim: strategic proposals to advance health equity in a volatile policy environment

    Health professionals, including social workers, community health workers, public health workers, and licensed health care providers, share common interests and responsibilities in promoting health equity and improving social determinants of health—the conditions in which we live, work, play, and learn. This article summarizes underlying causes of health inequity and comparatively poor health outcomes in the U.S. It describes barriers to realizing the hope embedded in the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that moving away from fee-for-service payments will naturally drive care upstream as providers respond to greater financial risk for the health of their patients by undertaking greater prevention efforts. The article asserts that health equity should serve as the guiding framework for achieving the Triple Aim of health care reform. It outlines practical opportunities for improving care and for promoting stronger efforts to address social determinants of health. These proposals include developing a dashboard of measures to assist providers committed to health equity and community-based prevention and to promote institutional accountability for addressing socio-economic factors that influence health

    GRB 081029: Understanding Multiple Afterglow Components

    We present an analysis of the unusual optical light curve of the gamma-ray burst GRB~081029, which occurred at a redshift of z = 3.8479$. We combine X-ray and optical observations from the Swift X-Ray Telescope and the Swift UltraViolet/Optical Telescope with optical and infrared data obtained using the REM and ROTSE telescopes to construct a detailed data set extending from 86 s to approximately 100,000 s after the BAT trigger. Our data also cover a wide energy range, from 10 keV to 0.77 eV (1.24 Angstrom to 16,000 Angstrom). The X-ray afterglow shows a shallow initial decay followed by a rapid decay starting at about 18,000s. The optical and infrared afterglow, however, shows an uncharacteristic rise at about 5000 s that does not correspond to any feature in the X-ray light curve. Our data are not consistent with synchrotron radiation from a single-component jet interacting with an external medium.
