    Performance Attributions: Pure Theory Meets Messy Reality

    This article is the winner of The Best Research Paper Presented by a Practicing Real Estate Professional manuscript prize [sponsored by the American Real Estate Society Foundation (ARESF)] presented at the 2001 American Real Estate Society Annual Meeting. The popularity of performance attribution in the publicly-traded equities arena may soon spill over to real estate markets. With that in mind, this study analyzes the practical and statistical problem that may arise when real estate managers apply this technique to their portfolios. The study involves three data sets: a portfolio of publicly-traded REITs, a single-client separate account and a multi-client private REIT. The findings indicate that there is no clear distinction between stock selection and sector allocation in any of the data sets (i.e., the portfolio impact of the manager’s sector allocation and asset selection decisions are, on average, indistinguishable). Also, for the publicly-traded REIT portfolio (the only data set with sufficient sample size), the monthly returns attributed to stock selection versus sector allocation do not display significant serial persistence (i.e., the manager cannot consistently attribute the portfolio returns to either the stock selection or sector allocation decision).

    Using calorimetric techniques, subjects' metabolism, thermoregulation, and body temperatures were monitored continuously for 24-hour days, using three types of experimental routines. A water cooling garment (WCG) was used for direct calorimetry, while partitional calorimetry was used to establish a non-suited comparison for one of the routines. In this replicated routine, called the quiet day, the subjects were sedentary throughout the daytime hours and slept normally at night. Results indicate that the WCG may act to reduce 24-hour total oxygen consumption (VO2) or heat production, possibly due to the lowered energy cost of thermoregulation

    Redshifts of the Gravitational Lenses MG1131+0456 and B1938+666

    The redshifts of the gravitational lens galaxies in MG1131+0456 and B1938+666 are 0.844 and 0.881 respectively. Both are early-type galaxies lying at the redshifts predicted by assuming that they are early-type galaxies with old stellar populations lying on the fundamental plane. We also find evidence for a foreground group of galaxies at z=0.343 near MG1131+0456.     Catfi sh and red beans are high in protein and essential amino acid than can be processed into nuggets and used as high-protein snack alternative. This research aimed to determine the effect of catfi sh and red beans toward the acceptance and protein content, as well as determine the best composition to produce a good quality nuggets. Type of research in the development formula using true experimental with a completely randomized design. There were four (4) types of treatment (combination of catfi sh, catfi sh bones, and red beans) with three (3) times replication. Panelist used was 35 untrained panelists. Product acceptance was tested using statistical analysis Kruskal Wallis and Mann Whitney (Ć’Âż . 0.05). The result of organoleptic tests showed the most preferred nugget is F1 (combination of catfi sh and red beans). Highest increased protein per 100g nugget is F1 (combination of catfi sh and red beans) with 14.5 gcompare to F0 (catfi sh) with 11,5 g, there was signifi cant difference between F0 and F1, F2, F3, F4 to the characteristic of odour (p = 0.000), texture (p = 0.008), fl avor (p = 0.000), and form (p = 0.000). The best composition formula is F1 (combination of catfi sh and red beans).The best formula in terms of its composition, acceptability, and nutritionalvalue was F1 (combination of catfi sh and red beans)

    Optimising Spectroscopic and Photometric Galaxy Surveys: Efficient Target Selection and Survey Strategy

    The next generation of spectroscopic surveys will have a wealth of photometric data available for use in target selection. Selecting the best targets is likely to be one of the most important hurdles in making these spectroscopic campaigns as successful as possible. Our ability to measure dark energy depends strongly on the types of targets that we are able to select with a given photometric data set. We show in this paper that we will be able to successfully select the targets needed for the next generation of spectroscopic surveys. We also investigate the details of this selection, including optimisation of instrument design and survey strategy in order to measure dark energy. We use color-color selection as well as neural networks to select the best possible emission line galaxies and luminous red galaxies for a cosmological survey. Using the Fisher matrix formalism we forecast the efficiency of each target selection scenario. We show how the dark energy figures of merit change in each target selection regime as a function of target type, survey time, survey density and other survey parameters. We outline the optimal target selection scenarios and survey strategy choices which will be available to the next generation of spectroscopic surveys.Comment: 16 pages, 22 figures, accepted to MNRAS in dec 201

    Moringa oleifera is local plant rich in nutrients, unfortunately its utilization as a foodstuff is limited. In order to maximize the absorbtion of nutrients inside moringa, it should be made as favor food enjoyed by the people such as jelly candy. This research was conducted to evaluate organoleptic properties and nutritional value (energy and â-caroten) of jelly candy formulated with Moringa leaves powder. Using Comlpetely Randomized Design with 6 times repetition in 4 formulas which are 1 controlled formula and 3 modifi ed formulas (F1, F2, and F3), jelly candy then tested to 32untrained panels. Treatment given in this study was by adding 2%, 4%, and 6% moringa leaves powder into jelly candy formula. Data was analyzed descriptively and statistically using Kruskal Wallis and Mann Whitney test to fi nd out the difference pair. Recommended formula was chosen by counting the highest mean score of the sensory evaluationtest. The result of sensory evaluation showed that Moringa Jelly Candy was generally accepted with category “like”. However, jelly candy with lowest level of Moringa leaves powder (F1) was most acceptable in terms of color, odor, texture, and fl avor. Statistical analysis showed that the scores of color, odor, and texture were not signifi cantly different (p > 0.05) and fl avor was (p < 0.005) which means that by adding moringa leaves powder into jelly candy formula only infl uence the fl avor of jelly candy. Recommended jelly candy formula is F1 with nutritional analysis showed that per 100 g of jelly candy contains 205,8 kcal and 0.178 mcg of B -caroten

    The 8 o'clock Arc: A Serendipitous Discovery of a Strongly Lensed Lyman Break Galaxy in the SDSS DR4 Imaging Data

    We report on the serendipitous discovery of the brightest Lyman Break Galaxy (LBG) currently known, a galaxy at z=2.73 that is being strongly lensed by the z=0.38 Luminous Red Galaxy (LRG) SDSS J002240.91+143110.4. The arc of this gravitational lens system, which we have dubbed the "8 o'clock arc" due to its time of discovery, was initially identified in the imaging data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4 (SDSS DR4); followup observations on the Astrophysical Research Consortium (ARC) 3.5m telescope at Apache Point Observatory confirmed the lensing nature of this system and led to the identification of the arc's spectrum as that of an LBG. The arc has a spectrum and a redshift remarkably similar to those of the previous record-holder for brightest LBG (MS 1512-cB58, a.k.a "cB58"), but, with an estimated total magnitude of (g,r,i) = (20.0,19.2,19.0) and surface brightness of (mu_g,mu_r,mu_i) = (23.3, 22.5, 22.3) mag/arcsec^2, the 8 o'clock arc is thrice as bright. The 8 o'clock arc, which consists of three lensed images of the LBG, is 162deg (9.6arcsec) long and has a length-to-width ratio of 6:1. A fourth image of the LBG -- a counter-image -- can also be identified in the ARC 3.5m g-band images. A simple lens model for the system assuming a singular isothermal ellipsoid potential yields an Einstein radius of 2.91+/-0.14 arcsec, a total mass for the lensing LRG (within the (10.6+/-0.5)/h kpc enclosed by the lensed images) of 1.04x10^12/h Msun, and a magnification factor for the LBG of 12.3(+15/-3.6). The LBG itself is intrinsically quite luminous (approximately 6L*) and shows indications of massive recent star formation, perhaps as high as 160/h Msun/year.Comment: 4 pages 5 figures, submitted to ApJ Letter
