    1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) effects on natural disease resistance in stored sweetpotato

    BACKGROUND The potential of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) to maintain postharvest storage of sweetpotato was studied. In two separate experiments, the orange-fleshed sweetpotato cv. Covington was fumigated with 1-MCP (1.0 μL L-1, 24 h) and roots stored at 15 oC. During storage, samples were evaluated for the respiration rate, sprout growth, weight loss, incidence of decay and changes in dry matter. The roots were further assayed for the temporal changes in individual non-structural carbohydrates and phenolic compounds in the skin and flesh tissues of the proximal (stem end), middle, and distal (root end) regions. RESULTS 1-MCP treatment reduced root weight loss and decay but respiration rate and non-structural carbohydrates were not affected. No sprouting was recorded irrespective of the treatment. 1-MCP transiently suppressed the accumulation of individual phenolic compounds, especially in the middle and distal segments. This accentuated the proximal dominance of phenolic compounds. Isochlorogenic acid A and chlorogenic acid were the dominant phenolics in the skin and flesh tissues, respectively. CONCLUSION 1-MCP treatment may have anti-decay effect and reduce weight loss. Therefore, storage trials which involve the use of continuous ethylene supplementation to inhibit sprout growth may be combined with 1-MCP to alleviate ethylene-induced weight loss and decay in sweetpotato

    Lipid Profile and High Maternal Body Mass Index is Associated with Preeclampsia: A Case-Control Study of the Cape Coast Metropolis

    Background: Preeclampsia is a leading cause of maternal mortality worldwide and a serious health problem that affects the majority of women. Aim: We investigated the association between lipid profile and maternal obesity among preeclamptic women in the Cape Coast Metropolis. Subject and Methods: This case.control study involved 60 preeclamptics and 50 healthy pregnant controls matched for age and gestational weeks consecutively recruited from two major hospitals in the Cape Coast Metropolis. Blood samples were collected after overnight fasting and enzymatic spectrophotometric tests used to estimate lipid concentrations.The independent samples t.test, Chi.square, and Pearsonfs correlation were used in the analysis of data gathered.Results: Serum triglyceride (TG) (P = 0.04), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) (P = 0.02), TC (P = 0.01) and low density lipoprotein (LDL) (P = 0.03) levels were higher in preeclamptic participants than in the controls. High density lipoprotein concentration showed no significant variation between the two groups (P = 0.83). Preeclamptic women were more obese (P = 0.07). High body mass index (OR = 1.501; CI = 0.926.2.106, P = 0.01), high TG level (OR = 5.026; CI = 0.794-31.818, P = 0.01), were associated with preeclampsia.Conclusion: Lipid abnormalities, mostly elevated levels of TG, TC, LDL, andVLDL are present in preeclamptics.     Design and construction of a flexible laboratory-scale mixing apparatus for continuous ethylene supplementation of fresh produce

    The design and construction of a laboratory-scale apparatus for generating variable concentrations and flow rates of exogenous ethylene for fresh produce supplementation during storage trials is described. A stock of compressed ethylene in nitrogen (5000 μl l−1) was blended into a continuous flow stream of air and diluted to the desired concentrations. The ethylene and air flow rates were controlled with calibrated mass flow control valves. An empirical mathematical model was derived for real-time variation of both the mixed concentration and flow rate during continuous flow. Validation of the model was performed using fresh sweet potato as a case study where a steady continuous ethylene concentration of 10 μl l−1 was achieved for three months.     Detection of Weak D (Du) Phenotype among Rh-D Negative Males and Females in Kumasi, Ghana

    Weak Rh D phenotypes are very frequent in Africans. They are capable of causing alloimmunization in Rh D-negative individuals. Some weak Ds may elude routine typing using direct agglutination techniques. This study aimed at determining the prevalence of weak D phenotype among Rhnegatives, using indirect antiglobulin technique. A total of 400 donors between the ages of 16 and 35 years who were grouped by the blood bank were randomly sampled over a period of 2 months. Three hundred and sixty nine (92.25%) were typed as Rh D-positive and 31 (7.75%) RhD-negative. Two (6.45%) of the Rh D-negative donors were weak D positive while 29 (93.55%) were weak D negative. Among the males 25 (9.43%) were Rh D-negative and 240 (90.57%) RhD-positive. Two (8%) of the 25 males were weak D positive. Among the females, 6 (4.44%) were Rh D-negative and 129 (95.56%) RhD- positive. This implies that, there are people in Kumasi with weak D phenotype which cannot be detected by the direct monoclonal anti-D agglutination. Consequently, indirect antiglobulin test may be indicated for such individuals typed Rh D-negative. This study has shown the need for a comprehensive policy on appropriate testing of donors and newborns, and management of Rh D-negative mothers in the Region. This should include weak D testing of all Rh Dnegative blood donors before transfusion in Rh D-negative patient.     Assessment of the mediating effects of external integration on manufactury firms operational performance

    Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess both the direct effect of supply chain integration on firm’s operational performance and the mediating effect of external integration (customer integration and supplier integration) on the relationship between internal integration and operational performance among manufacturing firms. Design/methodology/approach: Quantitative survey research design was adopted. A total of thirty (30) manufacturing firms were sampled using cluster sampling. The data was collected using questionnaires from 317 employees in the procurement, account and administration units of the 30 manufacturing firms. Structural Equation Modeling was used to analyze the direct and mediation relationships. Findings: The results showed that the relationship between internal integration and operational performance was significantly mediated by external integration. It was established that operational performance could only be achieved when manufacturing firms’ managers pay critical attention to internal and external integration. A Significant positive relationship also exists between supplier integration and operational performance as well as customer integration and operational performance. Originality/value: The unique contribution of the current study is the assessment of the mediating effect of external integration constructs (customer integration and supplier integration) as the mediating variable on internal integration and operational performance

    Green Supply Chain Management and Environmental Performance: The moderating role of Firm Size

    This study examined the impact of internal and external green supply chain practices on environmental performance among construction firms. The study used the quantitative survey research design in its methodology. A total of 217 employees were sampled from fifty (50) construction firms. Structural Equation Modeling was used to analyze the data. The results showed that green design does not have a significant positive relationship with environmental performance. However, green design has a positive impact on external green practices namely green purchasing and green construction. Green purchasing and green construction have direct positive relationships with environmental performance. Green design through external green practices have a significant positive relationship with environmental performance. The study found that firm size moderates the relationship between green design, through external green supply chain practices and environmental performance among construction firms

    Supply chain integration and operational performance in health institutions: A structural model for mediation effects

    This study has examined the impact of supply chain integration on operational performance among health institutions. The study assessed the direct, indirect and mediated effects of supply chain integration on operational performance among health institutions in Ghana using the Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). In this research, the quantitative descriptive survey research design was used. A total of twenty (20) health institutions were sampled from an accessible population of thirty (30) using the simple random sampling technique. A total of two hundred and fifty-four (254) employees and managers from the health institutions were sampled using the stratified sampling technique. For direct effects, the findings of the study have shown that internal integration positively impacts external integration (customer and supplier integration). Direct positive relationships exist between internal integration and operational performance as well as supplier integration and operational performance. A non-significant relationship exists between customer integration and operational performance. For mediation effects, supplier integration significantly mediates the relationship between internal integration and operational performance, while customer integration does not significantly mediate the relationship between internal integration and operational performance among the health institutions in Ghana. The study has managerial implications for health institutions in strengthening their supplier and customer integrations through advanced database systems to enhance their operational performance

    Additive manufacturing towards product production: A bibliometric analysis

    Additively manufactured products offer extensive variety to consumers than many forms of production. Additive manufacturing (AM) production system allows consumer involvement, which has created a huge but largely untapped market. However, there is a gap between production and the market. Therefore, AM towards product production which focuses on the Commercialization of Additive Manufactured Products (CAMPs) is imperative. Despite the importance of CAMP, specific focus of research on the commercialization of additively manufactured products are scanty. There is also a lack of knowledge about the conceptual structure, intellectual structure, research trends, and the thematic structure of CAMP research. To contribute to this stream of research, this study takes an exploratory dimension by conducting a bibliometric analysis of publications on the CAMP. The R package and its associated biblioshiny were the software used. The study reveals that studies on CAMP started in 2007 with renewed interest starting from 2012. Importantly, it was found that the most cited articles focused on the economic potential of AM products in the home and specific industries. Also, there is an increasing focus on the business models that are necessary for the commercialisation of AM products. Generally, there is a shift in focus from the firm to the market. However, this is a niche area and requires more attention. Themes such as commercialization are just emerging, and researchers need to devote more time and effort to the consumer side of the commercialization of AM products

    Influence of Parasitic Worm Infections on Allergy Diagnosis in Sub-Saharan Africa.

    Epidemiological studies from Sub-Saharan Africa indicate that allergies are on the rise in this region especially in urban compared to rural areas. This increase has been linked to improved hygiene, lifestyle changes, and lower exposure to pathogens in childhood. Reduced exposure to parasitic worm (helminth) infections and allergy outcomes has been the focus of a number of population studies over the years. Paradoxically, there are parallels in the immune responses to helminths and to allergies. Both conditions are associated with elevated levels of immunoglobulin E, high numbers of T helper 2 cells, eosinophils, and mast cells. These immune parallels have meant that the diagnosis of allergies in parts of the world where helminths are endemic can be hampered. The aim of this review is to examine observations from population studies conducted in Sub-Saharan Africa that demonstrate how helminth infections influence the parameters used to diagnose allergy outcomes in this region. We explore specifically how helminth infections hinder the in vitro diagnosis of allergic sensitization, influence the clinical manifestations of allergy, and also the effect of anthelmintic treatment on allergy outcomes. Advancing our understanding of how helminths influence allergy diagnosis is imperative for the development of improved tools to assess, diagnose, and treat allergic disorders in both helminth-endemic and non-endemic countries worldwide

    Additive manufacturing interventions during the covid-19 pandemic: South Africa

    Additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, is considered a renaissance of the manufacturing industry. Its unique capability of manufacturing 3D objects with intricate geometrical configurations has been used to produce hospital equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) in an attempt to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in South Africa. The technology has been used by different research units to produce ventilators, respirator face masks, oscillating respiratory devices, oxygen connectors, oxygen splitters, non-invasive ventilation helmets, reusable clinician PPE, visor frames for face shields, etc. Despite the efforts of the AM community in South Africa, COVID-19 infections have continued to increase in the country. It came to light that technological interventions (including AM) alone cannot prevent the spread of the virus without the corresponding adaptive behavioural changes, such as adhering to COVID-19 prevention protocols (washing of hands, social distancing, etc.). It could be postulated that the spread of COVID-19 can only be prevented by inter-marrying the technological interventions (AM) with adaptive behavioural changes
