Correlation inequalities for noninteracting Bose gases

For a noninteracting Bose gas with a fixed one-body Hamiltonian H^0 independent of the number of particles we derive the inequalities _N < _{N+1}, _N _N _N for i\neq j, \partial _N/\partial \beta >0 and ^+_N _N. Here N_i is the occupation number of the ith eigenstate of H^0, \beta is the inverse temperature and the superscript + refers to adding an extra level to those of H^0. The results follow from the convexity of the N-particle free energy as a function of N.Comment: a further inequality adde

Ferromagnetism in multi--band Hubbard models: From weak to strong Coulomb repulsion

We propose a new mechanism which can lead to ferromagnetism in Hubbard models containing triangles with different on-site energies. It is based on an effective Hamiltonian that we derive in the strong coupling limit. Considering a one-dimensional realization of the model, we show that in the quarter-filled, insulating case the ground-state is actually ferromagnetic in a very large parameter range going from Tasaki's flat-band limit to the strong coupling limit of the effective Hamiltonian. This result has been obtained using a variety of analytical and numerical techniques. Finally, the same results are shown to apply away from quarter-filling, in the metallic case.Comment: 12 pages, revtex, 12 figures, needs epsf and multicol style file

The Relation Between Noise Induced Hearing Loss and Years of Service Among Workers of a Paper Factory

    Get PDF
IntroductionThis study planned to investigate the occurrence time of noise induced hearing loss (NRHL) among workers in a loud work environment.Material and MethodsFor this study, the data of 70 workers who work in different departments of a paper factory was examined retrospectively. Workers were allocated in two groups as A (environment’s noise level is under 80 dB) and B (over 85 dB) according to their departments’ noise level. The workers with noise induced hearing loss were determined with the last Pure Tone Audiogram results.ResultsThe median age was 36.98 of 70 workers included 2 females and 68 males. 15 workers with hearing loss were determined. Group B showed twice as many hearing loss results compared to the group A (5 in A and 10 in B groups), however, these results were not found to be statistically significant (p: 0.244). In the examination of the number of workers with noise induced hearing loss distributed by the years spent in this workplace, 14 of the workers who have been working in the factory over 10 years had hearing loss while only 1 worker in the group with up to 10 years of experience was affected. The difference of this distribution was statistically significant (p: 0.002).ConclusionThe data of this study shows that there is a positive correlation between hearing loss incidence and years of service in a loud workplace. Particularly, individuals with over 10 years of experience show distinctive increase of hearing loss. Years spent in a loud workplace and accordingly, the amount of time being exposed to loud noise, increase the noise induced hearing loss

Can screening Chlamydia trachomatis by serological tests predict tubal damage in infertile patients?

PubMed ID: 18437844Effectiveness of screening Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) antibody to predict tubal damage was assessed in this prospective study which was performed in a teaching hospital between September 2003 and September 2004. The study group consisted of 152 patients who underwent laparoscopy for infertility and the control group consisted of 80 fertile women who gave birth in the same hospital. CT antibody levels were measured by IFA (Indirect Fluorescence Assay for CT). Adhesions were defined by Gomel's classification system. Rate of seropositivity of CT was 34.6% in the study group and 22.5% in the control group (p>0.05). In the study group, the sensitivity, specifity, positive predictive and negative predictive values of CT positivity for tubal damage were 40%, 69.5%, 50% and 60.2% respectively. In the infertile group, the rate of tubal adhesion in the CT positive group was 50% and in the CT negative group it was 39.7% (p>0.05). However, there was a positive correlation between the severity of tubo-peritoneal adhesions and seropositivity for CT. In this study, we found out that tubo-peritoneal adhesions could not be predicted by the presence of CT inserum. There was a positive correlation between high CT seropositivity and high degree of adhesions

The Effect of 900-Megahertz Electromagnetic Field Exposure in the First and Middle Adolescent Period on the Spleen in Male Rats: A Biochemical and Histopathological Study

Aim: Adolescents are at risk due to the intensive use of mobile phones. The aim of this study was to investigate the histopathological and biochemical effects of 900-Megahertz electromagnetic field on spleen in late adolescent period, exposed during periods of early and mid-adolescence. Material and Methods: In this study, 24 Sprague Dawley 21-day-old male rats were divided into control (n=8), sham (n=8) and electromagnetic field groups (n=8). Control group rats were not subjected to any application. Electromagnetic field group rats were taken into the electromagnetic field cage and were exposed to 900-Megahertz electromagnetic field (1 hour per day for 25 days). Sham group rats were taken into the electromagnetic field cages but were not exposed to electromagnetic field. At the end of the treatment, all animals were sacrificed by cervical dislocation method and the spleens were removed. After histological procedures, tissue sections were taken and stained with hematoxylin-eosin and periodic acid Schiff. Histopathological evaluation was performed on the spleen tissues. Oxidative stress parameters including lipid peroxidation, superoxide dismutase, glutathione and catalase levels were investigated via biochemical analysis. Results: Histopathological evaluation revealed megakaryocyte cells, enlarged white pulps and dilated sinusoids in spleen tissues of adolescent rats in electromagnetic field group. According to biochemical analysis results, it was determined that glutathione and lipid peroxidation values were increased, but superoxide dismutase and catalase values were decreased. Conclusion: It can be said that the 900-Megahertz electromagnetic field applied in adolescent period caused morphological changes on spleen tissue and caused oxidative stress in male rats. © 2019, Duzce University Medical School. Background: Differentiated thyroid carcinomas (DTC) account for most of the thyroid cancers. The emergence of DTC may be affected by various predisposing genetic alterations and environmental factors The aim of this study was to investigate the role of VEGF C936T and IL-8 A251T gene polymorphisms in the pathogenesis and metastasis of differentiated thyroid cancer
