Hierarchical modelling of temperature and habitat size effects on population dynamics of North Atlantic cod

Understanding how temperature affects cod (Gadus morhua) ecology is important for forecasting how populations will develop as climate changes in future. The effects of spawning-season temperature and habitat size on cod recruitment dynamics have been investigated across the North Atlantic. Ricker and Beverton and Holt stock–recruitment (SR) models were extended by applying hierarchical methods, mixed-effects models, and Bayesian inference to incorporate the influence of these ecosystem factors on model parameters representing cod maximum reproductive rate and carrying capacity. We identified the pattern of temperature effects on cod productivity at the species level and estimated SR model parameters with increased precision. Temperature impacts vary geographically, being positive in areas where temperatures are <5°C, and negative for higher temperatures. Using the relationship derived, it is possible to predict expected changes in population-specific reproductive rates and carrying capacities resulting from temperature increases. Further, carrying capacity covaries with available habitat size, explaining at least half its variability across stocks. These patterns improve our understanding of environmental impacts on key population parameters, which is required for an ecosystem approach to cod management, particularly under ocean-warming scenarios. Beskæftigelseseffekter af investeringer i vejanlæg

Staten gennemfører i disse år mange store vejprojekter og der er typisk både stor politisk og offentlig interesse for effekterne af disse. Historisk har det primære fokus været på de trafikale effekter af infrastrukturinvesteringer, men i de senere år er der også kommet stigende interesse for at kunne måle andre og bredere effekter, såsom den arbejdskraftefterspørgsel, som skabes af anlægsprojekterne. Arbejdskraftefterspørgsel kan afhjælpe lokale ledighedsproblemer, eksempelvis i situationer med lavkonjunktur. I situationer med højkonjunktur stor kan store anlægsprojekter til gengæld risikere at rammes af rekrutteringsproblemer, som både kan fordyre eller forsinke projekter eller forvride lokale arbejdsmarkeder. Derfor er det interessant for beslutningstagerne at vide, i hvilket omfang et givent projekt øger beskæftigelsen, hvornår det sker, og hvilke faggrupper der påvirkes af efterspørgslen. Med fokus på håndtering af disse problemstillinger har COWI udarbejdet en generisk analysemodel for Vejdirektoratet, som giver mulighed for fremover at inkludere en opgørelse over beskæftigelseseffekterne i analyser og beslutningsoplæg. Analysen har fokus arbejdskraftefterspørgsel til vejbyggeri, baseret på analyse af en række forskellige projekttyper og det typiske arbejdskraftinput til vejprojekterne. Analysemodellen udgøres af en større beregningsmodel for direkte, indirekte og afledte beskæftigelseseffekter, baseret på erfaringer fra planlægning, budgettering og ledelse af vejprojekter og på gængse samfundsøkonomiske modeller for multiplikatoreffekter. Analysemodellen kan levere vigtig viden for bygherrer og andre beslutningstagere, arbejdsmarkedsaktører mv. og anvendes i den eksterne kommunikation om et større påtænkt anlægsprojekt

Cultural Iconicity: An Emergent Field

This issue of&nbsp;Academic Quarter&nbsp;on the topic of&nbsp;Icon&nbsp;brings together scholars from film and media history, art history, literary history, imagology, cultural semiotics, star studies, fashion studies and cultural studies, initiating a further exploration of the phenomenon of ‘cultural iconicity’. For the purpose of this issue we propose the following definition of a cultural icon:&nbsp;A commercialized, yet sacralized visual, aural or textual representation anchored in a specific temporal/historical and spatial/geographical context, broadly recognized by its recipients as having iconic status for a group of human agents within one or several discursive fields/communities. Within are contributions analyzing the phenomenon of cultural iconicity in the following areas of study: literature, music, art, fashion, film and other visual media, including photography. The reader will find papers that contribute further to the theorization of the field and its concepts, as well as papers that offer analyses of specific cases of cultural iconicity.&nbsp
