    La presencia de ciertas manchas que aparecen en determinados artículos de lana, es motivada por la existencia de fibras coloreadas en el vellón del cordero, las cuales no se encuentran localizadas en determinadas zonas del vellón. La coloración de las fibras se produce tanto por causas de tipo exógeno como por causas endógenas. Al proceder a la identificación del origen de la coloración según las reacciones propuestas por Seddon, se ha encontrado la presencia de cobre en las fibras verdes y ligeras trazas de hierro en las rojas, no habiéndose podido determinar el origen de las fibras azules. La coloración de las fibras, sólo ha podido ser eliminada de forma permanente, mediante tratamiento con soluciones oxidantes de composición similar a las empleadas en el blanqueo de la lana.Peer Reviewe

Se determina cual de las materias que intervienen, es el origen de la aparición de las manchas, así como las características más sobresalientes de las fibras que las motivan.     Evidences of evanescent Bloch waves in Phononic Crystals

    We show both experimentally and theoretically the evanescent behaviour of modes in the Band Gap (BG) of finite Phononic Crystal (PC). Based on experimental and numerical data we obtain the imaginary part of the wave vector in good agreement with the complex band structures obtained by the Extended Plane Wave Expansion (EPWE). The calculated and measured acoustic field of a localized mode out of the point defect inside the PC presents also evanescent behaviour. The correct understanding of evanescent modes is fundamental for designing narrow filters and wave guides based on Phononic Crystals with defects.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure

    Impacts of sea-level rise-induced erosion on the Catalan coast

    The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10113-016-1052-xThe Catalan coast as most of the developed Mediterranean coastal zone is characterized by the coincidence of stresses and pressures on the natural system with a high exposure and low adaptive capacity. Due to this, climate change-induced effects will increase natural hazards and aggravate their associated impacts and, in consequence, it is necessary to assess their effects for proper long-term management. In this work, we assess the impact of sea-level rise (SLR)-induced shoreline retreat on the Catalan coast for three scenarios ranging from 0.53 to 1.75 m by the year 2100. Implications are analysed in terms of affectation of two main functions provided by beaches, i.e. recreation and protection. Obtained results show that CC will be a serious threat to analysed functions since the expected enhanced shoreline retreat will severely decrease the recreational carrying capacity and the capacity of protection in the near future under tested scenarios. The actual level of development along the coastal zone reduces the natural resilient capacity of beaches to SLR in such a way that the lack of accommodation space can be identified as a main factor for the estimated impacts.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Role of frozen lubricant film on tribological behaviour and wear mechanisms in grinding

    International audienceIn this paper the friction conditions of Minimum Coolant Grinding (MCG) technology are deeply characterized. The MCG is a successful cooling/lubricating system that combines the application of Minimum Quantity of Lubrication (MQL) and CO2 at low temperatures to create a frozen layer of oil able to reach the contact zone. This technique has previously shown promising results to reduce heat generation in grinding process and improve the workpiece finish. A comparison of the energy consumption, forces and wear patterns have been performed between MCG and dry grinding by means of the On-Machine Test Bench. In the work authors have identified that MCG favours the shearing of the material reducing the energy consumption and wear of the abrasive. Differences are highlighted on the size of wear flats, the shape of the debris and the various types of wear mechanisms

    Engineered microenvironments for synergistic VEGF - integrin signalling during vascularization

    We have engineered polymer-based microenvironments that promote vasculogenesis both in vitro and in vivo through synergistic integrin-growth factor receptor signalling. Poly(ethyl acrylate) (PEA) triggers spontaneous organization of fibronectin (FN) into nanonetworks which provide availability of critical binding domains. Importantly, the growth factor binding (FNIII12-14) and integrin binding (FNIII9-10) regions are simultaneously available on FN fibrils assembled on PEA. This material platform promotes synergistic integrin/VEGF signalling which is highly effective for vascularization events in vitro with low concentrations of VEGF. VEGF specifically binds to FN fibrils on PEA compared to control polymers (poly(methyl acrylate), PMA) where FN remains in a globular conformation and integrin/GF binding domains are not simultaneously available. The vasculogenic response of human endothelial cells seeded on these synergistic interfaces (VEGF bound to FN assembled on PEA) was significantly improved compared to soluble administration of VEGF at higher doses. Early onset of VEGF signalling (PLCγ1 phosphorylation) and both integrin and VEGF signalling (ERK1/2 phosphorylation) were increased only when VEGF was bound to FN nanonetworks on PEA, while soluble VEGF did not influence early signalling. Experiments with mutant FN molecules with impaired integrin binding site (FN-RGE) confirmed the role of the integrin binding site of FN on the vasculogenic response via combined integrin/VEGF signalling. In vivo experiments using 3D scaffolds coated with FN and VEGF implanted in the murine fat pad demonstrated pro-vascularization signalling by enhanced formation of new tissue inside scaffold pores. PEA-driven organization of FN promotes efficient presentation of VEGF to promote vascularization in regenerative medicine applications

In this work, we have modeled an axisymmetric gradient index (GRIN) lens made of rigid toroidal scatterers embedded in air considering this symmetry matching with radially symmetric sources. The sound amplification obtained in the focal spot of the reported lens (8.24 dB experimentally) shows the efficiency of the axisymmetric lenses with respect to the previous Cartesian acoustic GRIN lenses.     Evanescent modes in Sonic Crystals: Complex relation dispersion and supercell approximation

    Evanescent modes in complete sonic crystals (SC) and SC with point defects are reported both theoretically and experimentally in this paper. Plane wave expansion (PWE) and, in general, ω(k)\omega(k) methods have been used to calculate band structures showing gaps that have been interpreted as ranges of frequencies where no real kk exists. In this work, we extend PWE to solve the complex k(ω)k(\omega) problem applied to SC, introducing the supercell approximation for studying one vacancy. Explicit matrix formulation of the equations is given. This k(ω)k(\omega) method enables the calculation of complex band structures, as well as enabling an analysis of the propagating modes related with real values of the function k(ω)k(\omega), and the evanescent modes related with imaginary values of k(ω)k(\omega). This paper shows theoretical results and experimental evidences of the evanescent behavior of modes inside the SC band gap. Experimental data and numerical results using the finite elements method are in very good agreement with the predictions obtained using the k(ω)k(\omega) method.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figure
