General analysis of self-dual solutions for the Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory in (1+2) dimensions
The solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory are studied in
(1+2) dimensions with the self-duality condition imposed on the Maxwell field.
We give a closed form of the general solution which is determined by a single
function having the physical meaning of the quasilocal angular momentum of the
solution. This function completely determines the geometry of spacetime, also
providing the direct computation of the conserved total mass and angular

Absorbing-state phase transitions with extremal dynamics
Extremal dynamics represents a path to self-organized criticality in which
the order parameter is tuned to a value of zero. The order parameter is
associated with a phase transition to an absorbing state. Given a process that
exhibits a phase transition to an absorbing state, we define an ``extremal
absorbing" process, providing the link to the associated extremal
(nonabsorbing) process. Stationary properties of the latter correspond to those
at the absorbing-state phase transition in the former. Studying the absorbing
version of an extremal dynamics model allows to determine certain critical
exponents that are not otherwise accessible. In the case of the Bak-Sneppen
(BS) model, the absorbing version is closely related to the "-avalanche"
introduced by Paczuski, Maslov and Bak [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 53}, 414 (1996)], or,
in spreading simulations to the "BS branching process" also studied by these
authors. The corresponding nonextremal process belongs to the directed
percolation universality class. We revisit the absorbing BS model, obtaining
refined estimates for the threshold and critical exponents in one dimension. We
also study an extremal version of the usual contact process, using mean-field
theory and simulation. The extremal condition slows the spread of activity and
modifies the critical behavior radically, defining an ``extremal directed
percolation" universality class of absorbing-state phase transitions.
Asymmetric updating is a relevant perturbation for this class, even though it
is irrelevant for the corresponding nonextremal class.Comment: 24 pages, 11 figure
Phase Fluctuations and Vortex Lattice Melting in Triplet Quasi-One-Dimensional Superconductors at High Magnetic Fields
Assuming that the order parameter corresponds to an equal spin triplet
pairing symmetry state, we calculate the effect of phase fluctuations in
quasi-one-dimensional superconductors at high magnetic fields applied along the
y (b') axis. We show that phase fluctuations can destroy the theoretically
predicted triplet reentrant superconducting state, and that they are
responsible for melting the magnetic field induced Josephson vortex lattice

Sex differentiation pattern in the annual fish Austrolebias charrua (Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae)
Sex differentiation process, determination of sexual strategy, and gametogenesis of the annual fish Austrolebias charrua are established. Evidence of histological sex differentiation in an antero-posterior gradient was observed in pre-hatching stages. Sexual strategy corresponds to the “differentiated gonochoric” pattern. Histological analyses of adult gonads showed an asynchronous spawning mode for females and continuous spawning for males. Mature oocytes presented fluid yolk. Testis organization corresponded to a restricted spermatogonial model. Herein, we report the ultrastructural organization of the vitelline envelope and the main features of the sperm of A. charrua. Taking together these results also contribute to phylogenetic studies and provide base line data to propose A. charrua as a biomonitor of contamination in a protected are

CP^n, or, entanglement illustrated
We show that many topological and geometrical properties of complex
projective space can be understood just by looking at a suitably constructed
picture. The idea is to view CP^n as a set of flat tori parametrized by the
positive octant of a round sphere. We pay particular attention to submanifolds
of constant entanglement in CP^3 and give a few new results concerning them.Comment: 28 pages, 9 figure
BLACK HOLES IN THREE-DIMENSIONAL DILATON GRAVITY THEORIES
Three dimensional black holes in a generalized dilaton gravity action theory
are analysed. The theory is specified by two fields, the dilaton and the
graviton, and two parameters, the cosmological constant and the Brans-Dicke
parameter. It contains seven different cases, of which one distinguishes as
special cases, string theory, general relativity and a theory equivalent to
four dimensional general relativity with one Killing vector. We study the
causal structure and geodesic motion of null and timelike particles in the
