    The impact of cross-cultural communication on organizational citizenship behavior in global virtual teams

    Due to the far-reaching impacts of globalization, rapid technological advancements, as well as the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, organizations are increasingly employing Global Virtual Teams (GVTs) to unite diverse talents across geographical boundaries. The distinct nature of GVTs brings about new and unique challenges, particularly related to communication. Moreover, fostering Organizational Citizenship Behavior (OCB), which refers to voluntary, discretionary proactive actions that benefit the organization, is proven to be more difficult in a virtual work environment. This thesis aims to explore the impact of cross-cultural communication on OCB in GVTs. The main objective is to understand how cultural diversity and digital communication influence employees' behavior within their respective GVT. Specifically, the study focuses on their willingness to engage in proactive activities that contribute to organizational success. The research methodology employed semi-structured interviews with seven participating employees from a single GVT within a multinational organization based in the Nordics. These participants represented diverse nationalities, backgrounds, work arrangements and work experiences, forming a representative sample and glimpse into current trends in organizational behavior and the future of work. Thematic analysis was used to identify and explore key themes arising from the interview data. The research revealed that cross-cultural communication plays a significant role in shaping OCB behaviors within GVTs. First, participants acknowledged that language proficiency and cultural understanding influenced their ability to build trust, collaborate, and engage in prosocial OCB. Secondly, the study highlighted the subjective nature of productivity and its potential cultural implications, emphasizing the importance of aligning work arrangements with individual preferences. Lastly, findings revealed a dual effect of adopting a lingua franca as a common language. It can mitigate communication barriers but at the same time have negative consequences when individuals have differing levels of proficiency in the language. The study suggests that organizations should adopt a nuanced approach to enhance OCB in GVTs, acknowledging that both individual and cultural factors influence employee behavior. Promoting cultural competency, providing language training, and creating a supportive virtual work environment can foster better communication which can lead to increased OCB. This thesis contributes to the growing body of research on OCB and virtual team dynamics, offering practical implications for organizations thrive in the dynamic landscape of the global business environment

    An Intermediate-band imaging survey for high-redshift Lyman Alpha Emitters: The Mahoroba-11

    We present results of our intermediate-band optical imaging survey for high-zz Lyα\alpha emitters (LAEs) using the prime focus camera, Suprime-Cam, on the 8.2m Subaru Telescope. In our survey, we use eleven filters; four broad-band filters (BB, RcR_{\rm c}, ii^\prime, and zz^\prime) and seven intermediate-band filters covering from 500 nm to 720 nm; we call this imaging program as the Mahoroba-11. The seven intermediate-band filters are selected from the IA filter series that is the Suprime-Cam intermediate-band filter system whose spectral resolution is R=23R = 23. Our survey has been made in a 34×2734^\prime \times 27^\prime sky area in the Subaru XMM Newton Deep Survey field. We have found 409 IA-excess objects that provide us a large photometric sample of strong emission-line objects. Applying the photometric redshift method to this sample, we obtained a new sample of 198 LAE candidates at 3<z<53 < z < 5. We found that there is no evidence for evolution of the number density and the star formation rate density for LAEs with logL(Lyα)(ergs1)>42.67\log L({\rm Ly}\alpha) ({\rm erg s^{-1}}) > 42.67 between z3z \sim 3 and 5.Comment: 46 pages, 15 figures, PASJ, Vol.57, No.6, in pres

    Developmental morphology of ovules and seeds of Nymphaeales

In the Cabombaceae the two species studied resemble some extant basal angiosperms by having a hood-shaped outer integument. A micropyle-hilum complex results when the outer integument and derived testa are lacking between the micropyle and the funiculus, thus the hood-shaped appearance. In the Nymphaeaceae the outer integument is annular at an early stage and then cup-shaped though it is semiannular at initiation in Nupar japonicum and Nymphaea alba. The micropyle and hilum are separated by an intervening testa. Developmental data on the formation of the outer integument, from semiannular to hood-shaped vs. from annular to cup-shaped, are useful for inferring the morphology of the outer integument from the relative position of the micropyle to the hilum in seed fossils. The oldest (early Cretaceous) probable nymphaealean seeds had the micropyle-hilum complex, suggesting that the hood-shaped outer integument may be primitive in the Nymphaeales. This needs to be tested by examination of this feature in other groups of basal angiosperms

    AINTEGUMENTA homolog expression in Gnetum (gymnosperms) and implications for the evolution of ovulate axes in seed plants

    金沢大学理工研究域自然システム学系The expression of GpANTL1, a homolog of AINTEGUMENTA (ANT) found in the gymnosperm Gnetum parvifolium, was analyzed by RT-PCR and in situ hybridization. GpANTL1 was expressed in the leaf primordia, root tips, and young ovules. In the ovulate axis, expression was detected as four distinct rings around the outer, middle, and inner envelope primordia as well as around the nucellar tip. This pattern of expression is similar to that of ANT in Arabidopsis thaliana. A comparison of the expression of GpANTL1 with that of PtANTL1 in the conifer Pinus thunbergii suggests that the integrated expression of PtANTL1 may have been caused by congenital fusion of the integument, ovuliferous scale, and bract. © 2008 The Author(s)

    Expression patterns of class I KNOX and YABBY genes in Ruscus aculeatus (Asparagaceae) with implications for phylloclade homology

    金沢大学大学院自然科学研究科生物多様性動態学金沢大学理学部STM (RaSTM) and YAB2 (RaYAB2) homologues were isolated from Ruscus aculeatus (Asparagaceae, monocots), and their expressions were analyzed by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to assess hypotheses on the evolutionary origin of the phylloclade in the Asparagaceae. In young shoot buds, RaSTM is expressed in the shoot apex, while RaYAB2 is expressed in the scale leaf subtending the shoot bud. This expression pattern is shared by other angiosperms, suggesting that the expression patterns of RaSTM and RaYAB2 are useful as molecular markers to identify the shoot and leaf, respectively. RaSTM and RaYAB2 are expressed concomitantly in phylloclade primordia. These results suggest that the phylloclade is not homologous to either the shoot or leaf, but that it has a double organ identity. © Springer-Verlag 2007

    Simultaneous Validation of Seven Physical Activity Questionnaires Used in Japanese Cohorts for Estimating Energy Expenditure: A Doubly Labeled Water Study

    Background: Physical activity questionnaires (PAQs) used in large-scale Japanese cohorts have rarely been simultaneously validated against the gold standard doubly labeled water (DLW) method. This study examined the validity of seven PAQs used in Japan for estimating energy expenditure against the DLW method.Methods: Twenty healthy Japanese adults (9 men; mean age, 32.4 [standard deviation {SD}, 9.4] years, mainly researchers and students) participated in this study. Fifteen-day daily total energy expenditure (TEE) and basal metabolic rate (BMR) were measured using the DLW method and a metabolic chamber, respectively. Activity energy expenditure (AEE) was calculated as TEE − BMR − 0.1 × TEE. Seven PAQs were self-administered to estimate TEE and AEE.Results: The mean measured values of TEE and AEE were 2,294 (SD, 318) kcal/day and 721 (SD, 161) kcal/day, respectively. All of the PAQs indicated moderate-to-strong correlations with the DLW method in TEE (rho = 0.57–0.84). Two PAQs (Japan Public Health Center Study [JPHC]-PAQ Short and JPHC-PAQ Long) showed significant equivalence in TEE and moderate intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC). None of the PAQs showed significantly equivalent AEE estimates, with differences ranging from −547 to 77 kcal/day. Correlations and ICCs in AEE were mostly weak or fair (rho = 0.02–0.54, and ICC = 0.00–0.44). Only JPHC-PAQ Short provided significant and fair agreement with the DLW method.Conclusions: TEE estimated by the PAQs showed moderate or strong correlations with the results of DLW. Two PAQs showed equivalent TEE and moderate agreement. None of the PAQs showed equivalent AEE estimation to the gold standard, with weak-to-fair correlations and agreements. Further studies with larger sample sizes are needed to confirm these findings

    A Subaru Search for Lyman-Alpha Emitters at z=5.8 with an Intermediate-Band Filter

    We present the results of a survey for Ly-alpha emitters at z ~ 5.8 using a new intermediate-band filter centered at lambda_c = 8275 AA with Delta-lambda_FWHM = 340 AA (i.e., the spectroscopic resolution is R ~ 23) with a combination with a traditional narrow-band centered at lambda_c = 8150 AA with Delta-lambda_FWHM = 120 AA (R ~ 68). Our observations were made with use of the Subaru Prime Focus Camera, Suprime-Cam, on the 8.2 m Subaru telescope in a sky area surrounding the high redshift quasar, SDSSp J104433.04-012522.2 at z=5.74, covering an effective sky area with ~ 720 arcmin^2. In this survey, we have found four Ly-alpha-emitter candidates from the intermediate-band image (z \~ 5.8 with Delta z ~ 0.3). Combined with our previous results based on the NB816 imaging, we discuss the star formation activity in galaxies between z ~ 5.7 and z ~ 5.9.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures.     Accuracy of 12 Wearable Devices for Estimating Physical Activity Energy Expenditure Using a Metabolic Chamber and the Doubly Labeled Water Method: Validation Study

    Background: Self-monitoring using certain types of pedometers and accelerometers has been reported to be effective for promoting and maintaining physical activity (PA). However, the validity of estimating the level of PA or PA energy expenditure (PAEE) for general consumers using wearable devices has not been sufficiently established.Objective: We examined the validity of 12 wearable devices for determining PAEE during 1 standardized day in a metabolic chamber and 15 free-living days using the doubly labeled water (DLW) method.Methods: A total of 19 healthy adults aged 21 to 50 years (9 men and 10 women) participated in this study. They followed a standardized PA protocol in a metabolic chamber for an entire day while simultaneously wearing 12 wearable devices: 5 devices on the waist, 5 on the wrist, and 2 placed in the pocket. In addition, they spent their daily lives wearing 12 wearable devices under free-living conditions while being subjected to the DLW method for 15 days. The PAEE criterion was calculated by subtracting the basal metabolic rate measured by the metabolic chamber and 0.1×total energy expenditure (TEE) from TEE. The TEE was obtained by the metabolic chamber and DLW methods. The PAEE values of wearable devices were also extracted or calculated from each mobile phone app or website. The Dunnett test and Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficients were used to examine the variables estimated by wearable devices.Results: On the standardized day, the PAEE estimated using the metabolic chamber (PAEEcha) was 528.8±149.4 kcal/day. The PAEEs of all devices except the TANITA AM-160 (513.8±135.0 kcal/day; P>.05), SUZUKEN Lifecorder EX (519.3±89.3 kcal/day; P>.05), and Panasonic Actimarker (545.9±141.7 kcal/day; P>.05) were significantly different from the PAEEcha. None of the devices was correlated with PAEEcha according to both Pearson (r=−.13 to .37) and Spearman (ρ=−.25 to .46) correlation tests. During the 15 free-living days, the PAEE estimated by DLW (PAEEdlw) was 728.0±162.7 kcal/day. PAEE values of all devices except the Omron Active style Pro (716.2±159.0 kcal/day; P>.05) and Omron CaloriScan (707.5±172.7 kcal/day; P>.05) were significantly underestimated. Only 2 devices, the Omron Active style Pro (r=.46; P=.045) and Panasonic Actimarker (r=.48; P=.04), had significant positive correlations with PAEEdlw according to Pearson tests. In addition, 3 devices, the TANITA AM-160 (ρ=.50; P=.03), Omron CaloriScan (ρ=.48; P=.04), and Omron Active style Pro (ρ=.48; P=.04), could be ranked in PAEEdlw.Conclusions: Most wearable devices do not provide comparable PAEE estimates when using gold standard methods during 1 standardized day or 15 free-living days. Continuous development and evaluations of these wearable devices are needed for better estimations of PAEE
