Angiopoietins and prediction of vitreous hemorrhage in type 2 diabetes patients with diabetic retinopathy
Background: Various types of vitreoretinal surgery are used for the treatment of severe diabetic retinopathy (DR), with vitreous hemorrhage being a common postoperative complication. Impaired angiopoietin system function in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients with DR plays a role in retinal vascular damage and may determine the development of vitreous hemorrhage, e.g., after vitrectomy.
Purpose: To identify the effects of angiopoietins on and their prognostic value in the development of vitreous hemorrhage after advanced vitreoretinal surgery in T2DM patients with DR.
Material and Methods: The study included 118 T2DM patients (118 eyes) with DR. These included patients with mild nonproliferative DR (NPDR; Group 1; n = 28), moderate or severe NPDR (Group 2; n = 49), and proliferative DR (PDR; Group 3; n = 41). They underwent a 25-G closed subtotal vitrectomy (CSTV) with panretinal laser photocoagulation. Either a mixture of perfluoropropane (18% C3F8) and air was used to perform tamponade of the vitreous cavity or balance salt solution (BSS plus) was left in the vitreous cavity. Vitreous samples were obtained during vitrectomy, and Ang1 and Ang2 concentrations and their ratio for these samples were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Models were developed using the EZR version 1.54 software (Saitama Medical Center, Jichi Medical University, Saitama, Japan), which is a graphical user interface for R (The R Foundation for Statistical Computing; Vienna, Austria).
Results: Vitreous hemorrhage developed in 33.1% of patients with T2DM by three months after vitrectomy for DR, and was directly associated with increased levels of Ang1 and Ang2 in the vitreous (p < 0.005). After adjustment for DR severity stage, the risk of postoperative vitreous hemorrhage in patients with mild NPDR was associated with an increased level of Ang2 in the vitreous (OR, 1.95; 95% CI, 1.06-3.59 per 100 pg/ml), with an optimal cut-off point of 1246 pg/ml (р = 0.003). The risk of postoperative vitreous hemorrhage in patients with severe NPDR and PDR was associated with the level of Ang2 as well as the Ang2/ Ang1 ratio in the vitreous. The study identified cut-off vitreous levels of Ang2 of (a) 2806 pg/mL for moderate or severe NPDR (AUC=0.84; 95% CI, 0.71-0.93; p < 0.001) and (b) 4610 pg/mL for PDR (AUC=0.71; 95% CI, 0.55-0.84; p = 0.013).
Conclusion: The results obtained demonstrated that Ang2 accumulation in the vitreous resulted in an increased risk of postoperative vitreous hemorrhage, and was of high prognostic significance
Anomalously large oxygen-ordering contribution to the thermal expansion of untwinned YBa2Cu3O6.95 single crystals: a glass-like transition near room temperature
We present high-resolution capacitance dilatometry studies from 5 - 500 K of
untwinned YBa2Cu3Ox (Y123) single crystals for x ~ 6.95 and x = 7.0. Large
contributions to the thermal expansivities due to O-ordering are found for x ~
6.95, which disappear below a kinetic glass-like transition near room
temperature. The kinetics at this glass transition is governed by an energy
barrier of 0.98 +- 0.07 eV, in very good agreement with other O-ordering
studies. Using thermodynamic arguments, we show that O-ordering in the Y123
system is particularly sensitive to uniaxial pressure (stress) along the chain
axis and that the lack of well-ordered chains in Nd123 and La123 is most likely
a consequence of a chemical-pressure effect.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted to PR
Superconducting Gap and Strong In-Plane Anisotropy in Untwinned YBa2Cu3O7-d
With significantly improved sample quality and instrumental resolution, we
clearly identify in the (pi,0) ARPES spectra from YBa2Cu3O6.993, in the
superconducting state, the long-sought `peak-dip-hump' structure. This advance
allows us to investigate the large a-b anisotropy of the in-plane electronic
structure including, in particular, a 50% difference in the magnitude of the
superconducting gap that scales with the energy position of the hump feature.
This anisotropy, likely induced by the presence of the CuO chains, raises
serious questions about attempts to quantitatively explain the YBa2Cu3O7-d data
from various experiments using models based on a perfectly square lattice.Comment: Phys. Rev. Lett., in press. Revtex, 4 pages, 4 postscript figures

Angle-resolved photoemission study of untwinned PrBaCuO: undoped CuO plane and doped CuO chain
We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission study on untwinned
PrBaCuO, which has low resistivity but does not show
superconductivity. We have observed a dispersive feature with a band maximum
around (/2,/2), indicating that this band is derived from the undoped
CuO plane. We have observed another dispersive band exhibiting
one-dimensional character, which we attribute to signals from the doped CuO
chain. The overall band dispersion of the one-dimensional band agrees with the
prediction of model calculation with parameters relevant to cuprates
except that the intensity near the Fermi level is considerably suppressed in
the experiment.Comment: 6 pages, 10 figure
Commensurate dynamic magnetic correlations in La2(Cu,Li)O4
When sufficient numbers of holes are introduced into the two-dimensional CuO2
square lattice, dynamic magnetic correlations become incommensurate with
underlying lattice in all previously investigated La_{2-x}A_xCu_{1-z}B_zO_{4+y}
(A=Sr or Nd, B=Zn) including high T_C superconductors and insulators, and in
bilayered superconducting YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.6} and Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8. Magnetic
correlations also become incommensurate in structurally related La_2NiO_4 when
doped with Sr or O. We report an exception to this so-far well established
experimental "rule" in La_2Cu_{1-z}Li_{z}O_4 in which magnetic correlations
remain commensurate.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, revised version as for publicatio
Azimuthal anisotropy and correlations in the hard scattering regime at RHIC
Azimuthal anisotropy () and two-particle angular correlations of high
charged hadrons have been measured in Au+Au collisions at
=130 GeV for transverse momenta up to 6 GeV/c, where hard
processes are expected to contribute significantly. The two-particle angular
correlations exhibit elliptic flow and a structure suggestive of fragmentation
of high partons. The monotonic rise of for GeV/c is
consistent with collective hydrodynamical flow calculations. At \pT>3 GeV/c a
saturation of is observed which persists up to GeV/c.Comment: As publishe
High-pT pi^zero Production with Respect to the Reaction Plane in Au + Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV
Measurements of the azimuthal anisotropy of high-\pT neutral pion neutral
pion production in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV by the PHENIX
experiment are presented. The data included in this paper were collected during
the 2004 RHIC running period and represent approximately an order of magnitude
increase in the number of analyzed events relative to previously published
results. Azimuthal angle distributions of pi^0s detected in the PHENIX
electromagnetic calorimeters are measured relative to the reaction plane
determined event-by-event using the forward and backward beam-beam counters.
Amplitudes of the second Fourier component (v_2) of the angular distributions
are presented as a function of pi^0 transverse momentum p_T for different bins
in collision centrality. Measured reaction plane dependent pi^0 yields are used
to determine the azimuthal dependence of the pi^0 suppression as a function of
p_T, R_AA (Delta phi,p_T). A jet-quenching motivated geometric analysis is
presented that attempts to simultaneously describe the centrality dependence
and reaction plane angle dependence of the pi^0 suppression in terms of the
path lengths of hypothetical parent partons in the medium. This set of results
allows for a detailed examination of the influence of geometry in the collision
region, and of the interplay between collective flow and jet-quenching effects
along the azimuthal axis.Comment: 344 authors, 35 pages text, RevTeX-4, 24 figures, 8 tables. Submitted

Azimuthal anisotropy of K0S and Lambda + Lambda -bar production at midrapidity from Au+Au collisions at sqrt[sNN]=130 GeV
We report STAR results on the azimuthal anisotropy parameter v2 for strange particles K0S, Lambda , and Lambda -bar at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[sNN]=130 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The value of v2 as a function of transverse momentum, pt, of the produced particle and collision centrality is presented for both particles up to pt~3.0 GeV/c. A strong pt dependence in v2 is observed up to 2.0 GeV/c. The v2 measurement is compared with hydrodynamic model calculations. The physics implications of the pt integrated v2 magnitude as a function of particle mass are also discussed.Alle Autoren: C. Adler, Z. Ahammed, C. Allgower, J. Amonett, B. D. Anderson, M.
