Conceiving and Executing Operation Gauntlet: The Canadian-Led Raid on Spitzbergen, 1941

    Get PDF
In August and September 1941, Canadian Brigadier Arthur Potts led a successful but little known combined operation by a small task force of Canadian, British, and Norwegian troops in the Spitzbergen (Svalbard) archipelago in the Arctic Ocean. After extensive planning and political conversations between Allied civil and military authorities, the operation was re-scaled so that a small, mixed task force would destroy mining and communications infrastructure on this remote cluster of islands, repatriate Russian miners and their families to Russia, and evacuate Norwegian residents to Britain. While a modest non-combat mission, Operation Gauntlet represented Canada’s first expeditionary operation in the Arctic, yielding general lessons about the value of specialized training and representation from appropriate functional trades, unity of command, operational secrecy, and deception, ultimately providing a boost to Canadian morale. Interactions also demonstrated the complexities of coalition warfare as well as the challenges associated with civil-military interaction in the theatre of operations

    Improving Academic Motivation

    Get PDF
Motivation is a key aspect in succeeding at any task. Generally, motivation keeps an individual moving toward his or her goal. It energizes and controls one’s behavior. In any leadership position, it is important to not only understand why motivation is essential, but how those around you are motivated. The purpose of this paper is to identify different motivation styles within an educational setting and provide a curriculum for teaching students how to stay motivated through using goal setting techniques. By analyzing already established research, this paper also looks into a school counselor’s role in motivating these students to succeed academically

The role of streetscape factors in pedestrian path choices in Shinjuku, Tokyo

    Get PDF
This research evaluates the impact of streetscape variables on pedestrian path choices in a walking environment. Emphasis is increasingly being placed on pedestrianoriented urban design in an attempt to mitigate the negative consequences associated with automobile-based development. However, little research exists on the actual impact o individual streetscape variables on the distribution ofpedestrians within a pre-defined street network. Information regarding pedestrian choice and distribution can be extracted through studying highly-visited streets in existing walking environments (i.e., areas that give priority to pedestrians by restricting vehicular traffic). The focus of this research is the highly-visited walking environment of Shinjuku in Tokyo, Japan. The goal is to identify whether specific streetscape variables (e.g., path maintenance, street width, number of street-level retail outlets, space syntax) impact the distribution of pedestrians within the district. Streetscape variables were assessed using a streetscape evaluation rubric and pedestrian behaviour was recorded through a "tracking" exercise. In addition, pedestrian distribution data collected in 2006 by another researcher working in the same area was analyzed. Findings highlight that retail, trees, path maintenance, paving material, and path width are positively correlated with high pedestrian distribution on street segments. The tracking data highlights the importance ofretail in shaping pedestrian path choices and the number of stops made en route from origin to destination in a walking environment

Perspectives on the Professional Communication Profile and Needs of Emerging Occupational Therapists of the Millennial Generation: A Comparison Study

    Get PDF
Background: Millennials, born between 1982 and 2000, became the largest share of the American workforce in 2015. As of 2014, 23.9% of American occupational therapists were under the age of 30. Positive traits ascribed to millennials include: highly educated, ambitious, confident, and optimistic. However, indicators of challenges for managing millennials emerge from media and anecdotal evidence, including stereotypes of disloyalty, entitlement, dependency, and casualness. Relevant for supporting professional development is a call to understand and enhance professional communication. Method: This study analyzed how emerging millennial occupational therapists self-describe their professional communication profile and needs, compared to the perspective of managers, while aiming to describe the accuracy of communication stereotypes. Occupational therapy managers and emerging occupational therapists of the millennial generation completed an online researcher-created survey. Results: Comparison of means revealed statistically significant differences, with the most significance noted on items reflecting professional communication skills of millennial occupational therapists. Conclusion: Analysis of results suggested support for some stereotypes and inaccuracy of others, painting a unique picture of the professional communication profile of millennial occupational therapists. Results from this small-population survey study may inform professional development opportunities for academic and fieldwork educators and occupational therapy managers related to the communication profile and needs of emerging occupational therapists through the lens of generational theory

Religious Involvement and the Attitudes Toward Birth Control

Religious Involvement and the Attitudes Toward Birth Control Carly Jacobs, Rachel LaFont, Whitney Wright Faculty Advisor: Erin M. Pryor, Ph.D. Key words: religion, birth control, contraceptive, sexual education, pregnancy prevention Historically, religious communities with conservative beliefs about sex and procreation offer limited access to and deter the use of birth control for pregnancy prevention (Cole & Geist, 2021; Piper et al., 2022; Wilde & Danielsen, 2014). Studies show that the higher religiosity involvement someone has, the less likely they are to use any artificial birth control to prevent pregnancy, and the more likely for them to remain abstinent (Piper et al., 2022). Recognizing the disparity in education of and access to birth control is important in continuing the fight for reproductive justice (Price, 2020; Roberts, 2015; Ross & Solinger, 2017). Therefore, our research explores religious involvement, attitudes toward birth control, and how different religions affect access to birth control in different ways. Through Dr. Pryor’s Social Research Methods class, we have synthesized previous research literature and explored different methodologies including: surveying Belmont students in an Introduction to Sociology course, analyzing a secondary data source of a CBS News survey about the Catholic church, analyzing content of sexual education initiatives, and interviewing a Belmont student about their experience. All of these methods were used to further our understanding of the influence of religion on access to and the use of birth control

Parallel Design of a Product and Internet of Things (IoT) Architecture to Minimize the Cost of Utilizing Big Data (BD) for Sustainable Value Creation

    Get PDF
Information has become today\u27s addictive currency; hence, companies are investing billions in the creation of Internet of Things (IoT) frameworks that gamble on finding trends that reveal sustainability and/or efficiency improvements. This approach to “Big Data” can lead to blind, astronomical costs. Therefore, this paper presents a counter approach aimed at minimizing the cost of utilizing “Big Data” for sustainable value creation. The proposed approach leverages domain/expert knowledge of the system in combination with a machine learning algorithm in order to limit the needed infrastructure and cost. A case study of the approach implemented in a consumer electronics company is also included

An Inquiry into Pennsylvania\u27s Early Childhood Quality Rating and Improvement System

High-quality care in the earliest years of life has been shown to relate to positive developmental outcomes for children, including improved early academic skills, social-emotional competencies, and cognitive functioning. Unfortunately, the early care experiences of many children are not always high quality; rather, research suggests that high-quality care is the exception. The growing evidence relating quality care to improved learning outcomes, the variability in quality across care settings, and the failure of existing approaches to improve child care have led to a national call to enhance the quality of early care and education programs. In response to this call, states have created Quality Rating and Improvement Systems (QRISs)
