Doppler cooling of gallium atoms: 2. Simulation in complex multilevel systems

This paper derives a general procedure for the numerical solution of the Lindblad equations that govern the coherences arising from multicoloured light interacting with a multilevel system. A systematic approach to finding the conservative and dissipative terms is derived and applied to the laser cooling of gallium. An improved numerical method is developed to solve the time-dependent master equation and results are presented for transient cooling processes. The method is significantly more robust, efficient and accurate than the standard method and can be applied to a broad range of atomic and molecular systems. Radiation pressure forces and the formation of dynamic dark-states are studied in the gallium isotope 66Ga.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figure

Use of subcutaneous ureteral bypass systems as a bridge to definitive ureteral repair in a cat with bilateral ureteral ligation secondary to complicated ovariohysterectomy

A kitten presented with acute kidney injury, bilateral hydronephrosis and proximal hydroureter, three days following bilateral ureteral ligation, during a complicated ovariohysterectomy procedure. Clinical signs were anorexia, lethargy, weakness, hypothermia, nausea, pain and anuria, associated with marked azotaemia, hyperkalaemia and metabolic acidosis. Insufficient response to medical management alone led to emergency surgical placement of bilateral subcutaneous ureteral bypass (SUB) systems, resulting in dramatic improvement in azotaemia and acidosis and resolution of hyperkalaemia. Elective bilateral neoureterocystostomy was performed the next day. The cat was clinically well for three months until the left SUB cystostomy catheter migrated out of the bladder resulting in uroabdomen. At this time, fluoroscopy demonstrated normal ureteral function bilaterally, so both SUBs were removed. Following recovery from surgery the cat has remained clinically normal. This report highlights the possibility of temporary SUB placement as a bridge to definitive ureteral repair in cases of accidental ureteral ligation

Effect of Foreclosure Status on Residential Selling Price

    Get PDF
Real estate professionals believe that foreclosed houses sell at a discount. This article empirically investigates whether foreclosed houses sell at a discount. A sample of 2,482 residential transactions in Arlington, Texas, is used in a hedonic pricing model to test this hypothesis. The results indicate that foreclosed properties sold at a 23% discount.

Industrial Real Estate Prices and Market Efficiency

    Get PDF
This study employs a multivariate Granger-causality procedure to examine causal relationships between selected economic and financial variables and industrial real estate prices. Empirical results indicate that relationships between several of these variables' lagged values and current values of price exist. We also find a significant relationship between past and current prices.

Sampling a Littoral Fish Assemblage: Comparison of Small-Mesh Fyke Netting and Boat Electrofishing

We compared small-mesh (4-mm) fyke netting and boat electrofishing for sampling a littoral fish assemblage in Muskegon Lake, Michigan. We hypothesized that fyke netting selects for small-bodied fishes and electrofishing selects for large-bodied fishes. Three sites were sampled during May (2004 and 2005), July (2005 only), and September (2004 and 2005). We found that the species composition of captured fish differed considerably between fyke netting and electrofishing based on nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMDS). Species strongly associated with fyke netting (based on NMDS and relative abundance) included the brook silverside Labidesthes sicculus, banded killifish Fundulus diaphanus, round goby Neogobius melanostomus, mimic shiner Notropis volucellus, and bluntnose minnow Pimephales notatus, whereas species associated with electrofishing included the Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, catostomids (Moxostoma spp. and Catostomus spp.), freshwater drum Aplodinotus grunniens, walleye Sander vitreus, gizzard shad Dorosoma cepedianum, and common carp Cyprinus carpio. The total length of fish captured by electrofishing was 12.8 cm (95% confidence interval ¼ 5.5– 17.2 cm) greater than that of fish captured by fyke netting. Size selectivity of the gears contributed to differences in species composition of the fish captured, supporting our initial hypothesis. Thus, small-mesh fyke nets and boat electrofishers provided complementary information on a littoral fish assemblage. Our results support use of multiple gear types in monitoring and research surveys of fish assemblages. Surgical valvulotomy for tricuspid valve stenosis in a dog

    Get PDF
A 2 year 4 month old female neutered Labrador retriever was presented for evaluation right sided congestive heart failure. Echocardiographic examination revealed tricuspid valve dysplasia with only two small orifices in the valve resulting in severe tricuspid stenosis. The dog underwent a right fifth lateral intercostal thoracotomy and surgical tricuspid valvulotomy, under cardiopulmonary bypass. The stenosis was relieved by dividing the valve leaflets between the two orifices with continuation to the commissures, creating a ‘bi-leaflet’ valve. The dog made a good recovery initially with echocardiography at 48 hours after surgery showing a reduction in tricuspid valve E and A wave velocities and pressure half time (from 230 ms to to 65 ms). She was discharged five days after surgery with spironolactone, benazepril, pimobendan and clopidogrel. The dog was re-presented two days later having collapsed, with pyrexia, facial swelling and pitting edema on the ventral neck and intermandibular region. Investigations did not reveal an underlying cause and the clinical signs resolved with supportive therapy. Two years after surgery the dog was free of clinical signs with normal exercise tolerance and only mild tricuspid regurgitation on echocardiography, with discontinuation of all medications

Searching for keV Sterile Neutrino Dark Matter with X-ray Microcalorimeter Sounding Rockets

High-resolution X-ray spectrometers onboard suborbital sounding rockets can search for dark matter candidates that produce X-ray lines, such as decaying keV-scale sterile neutrinos. Even with exposure times and effective areas far smaller than XMM-Newton and Chandra observations, high-resolution, wide field-of-view observations with sounding rockets have competitive sensitivity to decaying sterile neutrinos. We analyze a subset of the 2011 observation by the X-ray Quantum Calorimeter instrument centered on Galactic coordinates l = 165, b = -5 with an effective exposure of 106 seconds, obtaining a limit on the sterile neutrino mixing angle of sin^2(2 theta) < 7.2e-10 at 95% CL for a 7 keV neutrino. Better sensitivity at the level of sin^2(2 theta) ~ 2.1e-11 at 95\% CL for a 7 keV neutrino is achievable with future 300-second observations of the galactic center by the Micro-X instrument, providing a definitive test of the sterile neutrino interpretation of the reported 3.56 keV excess from galaxy clusters.Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures, submitted to Ap

Generalization of a result of Matsuo and Cherednik to the Calogero-Sutherland- Moser integrable models with exchange terms

A few years ago, Matsuo and Cherednik proved that from some solutions of the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov (KZ) equations, which first appeared in conformal field theory, one can obtain wave functions for the Calogero integrable system. In the present communication, it is shown that from some solutions of generalized KZ equations, one can construct wave functions, characterized by any given permutational symmetry, for some Calogero-Sutherland-Moser integrable models with exchange terms. Such models include the spin generalizations of the original Calogero and Sutherland ones, as well as that with δ\delta-function interaction.Comment: Latex, 7 pages, Communication at the 4th Colloquium "Quantum Groups and Integrable Systems", Prague (June 1995
