The purpose of this study is to add to the existing literature of knowledge and understanding of how a culturally relevant pedagogy such as Hip Hop can serve as an intrinsic motivation to encourage identity, engagement and empowerment among African American and Latino students. Critical Race Theory is utilized as the theoretical lens in this study as it challenges traditional educational practices and beliefs. The overarching question guiding this research is centered on ā€œWhat is the value of utilizing Hip Hopā€™s intrinsic quality of storytelling to encourage identity, engagement and empowerment among African American and Latino students in the urban classroom?ā€ The study population consists of two African American students and three Latino students enrolled in the Jobs for Americaā€™s Graduates (JAG) program and one African American JAG specialist. Data collection methods will include a student and staff interview, classroom observations and a multimedia artifact. The study findings will communicate the importance of creating a more favorable environment in urban high schools that offers students the opportunity to claim their voices through the art of storytelling to express the effectiveness of using Hip Hop in the classroom to promote identity, engagement and empowerment

One of the important aims of a college education is to inspire or motivate individuals in looking into the future -with anticipation to their next steps. Commencement is, indeed, the beginning of an entirely new phase of life for young people, All schools are interested in knowing what their graduates expect to do after completing their academic training and the curriculum planned often points the direction of hopes for the future. The student who majors in Home Economics in college stands at the threshold of a great number of careers. The curricula have been set up at Prairie View Agricultural and Mechanical College, so that a young woman, as well as a young man, may select a major in one of several areas. Home Economics graduates have the key to sixty-five or more interesting vocations, scattered over eight different fields. The School of Home Economics at Prairie View Agricultural and Mechanical College has the following objectives, as outlined in the College Bulletin: (...) to give training for home and family living to both men and women and also to provide special opportunity for study of the problems of homemaking, extension, and other phases of the home economics field. (...) offers some opportunities for graduate study. (...) consultant-teaching service offered to men and women who request assistance with problems of grooming; etiquette; budgeting; the care, selection, modeling, or construction of clothing; the daily task of management; the use of equipment; and the purchase and preparation of food for themselves or groups. (...) offers curricula with a major or minor in Foods and Nutrition, Dietetics, Textiles, and Clothing, Dressmaking and Design, Household Economics, Home Economics Education, Child Development, and Art. These objectives have been defined with the idea that there are many individual differences in students who choose a major in Home Economics. Some persons are scientifically inclined, others artistically so. Some students select Home Economics as a major because they are interested in people, and might wish to go into Social Service work, others may be more interested in working with children at the pre-school level. All students who select a major in Home Economics, probably are service-minded and wish to help other people, regardless of age. The students who desire to become dietitians have thought of service, science, and health

The Seed Of Sally Good\u27n: A Black Family of Arkansas, 1833-1953

Spencer Polk was born of an African-Indian slave woman known as Sally, and her master, Taylor Polk, a descendant of one of Americaā€™s first families and one of the earliest white settlers in the Arkansas Territory. A favored slave, Spencer Polk became a prosperous farmer and landowner in southwestern Arkansas and the founder of a numerous and energetic family. Since emancipation the family homestead he built on Muddy Fork Creek has housed succeeding generations and has drawn back those who sought their fortunes elsewhere. In this new paperback edition, Ruth Polk Patterson, a granddaughter of Spencer Polk who was born and raised in the log house he built, traces the life of Polk and his family from his birth in 1833 to the present generation. The skillful blending of folklore, history, and personal insight makes The Seed of Sally Goodā€™n an excellent contribution to the long neglected history of middle-class African Americans. Provides new and deeply authentic answers to old questions. . . . An important book. -- Journal of American Folklore [Pattersonā€™s] family history, past and present, is a salutary corrective of stereotyped images of black life. -- Times Literary Supplementhttps://uknowledge.uky.edu/upk_african_american_studies/1009/thumbnail.jp

Studies on the conversion of indole acetic acid and oxindole acetic acid by Hygrophorous conicus

    Get PDF
The fungus, Hygrophorous conicus, produces the enzyme, indole acetic acid oxidase, when grown in the presence of indole acetic acid (IAA) or tryptamine. The IAA acts both as an inducer and a substrate for this intracellular enzyme. The product of the oxidation catalyzed by the IAA oxidase is oxindole acetic acid (OIAA). Since the IAA and OIAA absorb maximally at two different wavelengths the use of spectrophotometric analysis was possible for assaying for the IAA oxidase activity. Paper chromatography was used for qualitative identification of the IAA and OIAA. The rate of growth and the rate of formation of the enzyme by H. Conicus were studied. The rate of growth was found to be similar to that of other fungi. The formation of the enzyme, however, proved to be somewhat different from that of other inducible enzyme systems. The OIAA formed by the oxidation if IAA was also found to induce the formation of an enzyme in H. conicus. This enzyme catalyzed the destruction of OIAA --Abstract, page ii

The nutritional habits of patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Malta : have they changed since the 1980s?

    Get PDF
The main aim of this study was to define the contemporary dietary habits of both patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and nondiabetics in Malta and to compare the results with the findings of a similar study performed in 1983 by Katona et al. The study was a cross sectional study of representative subsets of the Maltese population. A questionnaire was used to collect the data and record baseline characteristics, information about diet and exercise levels. Results showed that there were no statistically significant differences between the diets of the T2DM and nondiabetic cohorts. Compared to the 1983 data, the Maltese are eating more carbohydrates, less fat and fibre. Diabetics appear not to be changing their lifestyle habits once they are given their diagnosis. The results suggest that continuous education is needed on all aspects of a healthy lifestyle including dietary advice and should include both diabetics and non-diabetics.peer-reviewe
