    Kidney function in the very elderly with hypertension: data from the hypertension in the very elderly (HYVET) trial.

    BACKGROUND: numerous reports have linked impaired kidney function to a higher risk of cardiovascular events and mortality. There are relatively few data relating to kidney function in the very elderly. METHODS: the Hypertension in the Very Elderly Trial (HYVET) was a randomised placebo-controlled trial of indapamide slow release 1.5mg ± perindopril 2-4 mg in those aged ≥80 years with sitting systolic blood pressures of ≥160 mmHg and diastolic pressures of <110 mmHg. Kidney function was a secondary outcome. RESULTS: HYVET recruited 3,845 participants. The mean baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was 61.7 ml/min/1.73 m(2). When categories of the eGFR were examined, there was a possible U-shaped relationship between eGFR, total mortality, cardiovascular mortality and events. The nadir of the U was the eGFR category ≥60 and <75 ml/min/1.73 m(2). Using this as a comparator, the U shape was clearest for cardiovascular mortality with the eGFR <45 ml/min/1.73 m(2) and ≥75 ml/min/1.73 m(2) showing hazard ratios of 1.88 (95% CI: 1.2-2.96) and 1.36 (0.94-1.98) by comparison. Proteinuria at baseline was also associated with an increased risk of later heart failure events and mortality. CONCLUSIONS: although these results should be interpreted with caution, it may be that in very elderly individuals with hypertension both low and high eGFR indicate increased risk

    Merging literature and visual art, artist’s books reveal the fascinating experiment between word and image. The works of the Romantic poet, printer, and visionary William Blake invite exploration of this relationship. Blake\u27s illustrations in Songs of Innocence and Experience, revelatory in themselves, often subtly undercut or complicate the meanings of his writings, offering a complex view of the songs as both literary creations and material objects. Blake conceived the medium of the book as an ideal vehicle that, marrying text and image, had the power to join the author and the reading public. In addition to interpreting Blake\u27s poems, I examine his books as material objects, paying special attention to the relation of text and image. With Blake\u27s powerful example in mind, I proceed to examine contemporary “artist’s books” in order to gain insights into the continuing evolution of the book form

    Ambient temperature sensing by phytochrome B (PHYB) in Arabidopsis is thought to operate mainly at night. Here we show that PHYB plays an equally critical role in temperature sensing during the daytime. In daytime thermosensing, PHYB signals primarily through the temperature-responsive transcriptional regulator PIF4, which requires the transcriptional activator HEMERA (HMR). HMR does not regulate PIF4 transcription, instead, it interacts directly with PIF4, to activate the thermoresponsive growth-relevant genes and promote warm-temperature-dependent PIF4 accumulation. A missense allele hmr-22, which carries a loss-of-function D516N mutation in HMR's transcriptional activation domain, fails to induce the thermoresponsive genes and PIF4 accumulation. Both defects of hmr-22 could be rescued by expressing a HMR22 mutant protein fused with the transcriptional activation domain of VP16, suggesting a causal relationship between HMR-mediated activation of PIF4 target-genes and PIF4 accumulation. Together, this study reveals a daytime PHYB-mediated thermosensing mechanism, in which HMR acts as a necessary activator for PIF4-dependent induction of temperature-responsive genes and PIF4 accumulation

    Agriculturally, South Dakota is a unique state possessing the highest rate of adoption for genetically modified crop varieties. In 2009 ninety-six percent of corn acres planted in South Dakota were genetically modified compared with eighty-five percent nationally (Economic Research Service). Additionally, South Dakota has seen a dramatic increase in the number of acres treated with insecticide over the past 20 years. These two situations taken together seem to be counterintuitive. Some genetically modified varieties, such as Bt corn, are equipped with genetic defenses so that they can protect the plant from target pests. Intuitively, one would expect to see a decrease in insecticide use as adoption of genetically modified varieties increase. Recent studies have found that there is a reduction in herbicides applied to herbicide tolerant varieties. Here in South Dakota, though, producers have expressed the opinion that the increase in insecticide use is the result of the emergence and spread of the soybean aphid in the state.     A Multi-Moded RF Delay Line Distribution System for the Next Linear Collider

    The Delay Line Distribution System (DLDS) is an alternative to conventional pulse compression, which enhances the peak power of rf sources while matching the long pulse of those sources to the shorter filling time of accelerator structures. We present an implementation of this scheme that combines pairs of parallel delay lines of the system into single lines. The power of several sources is combined into a single waveguide delay line using a multi-mode launcher. The output mode of the launcher is determined by the phase coding of the input signals. The combined power is extracted from the delay line using mode-selective extractors, each of which extracts a single mode. Hence, the phase coding of the sources controls the output port of the combined power. The power is then fed to the local accelerator structures. We present a detailed design of such a system, including several implementation methods for the launchers, extractors, and ancillary high power rf components. The system is designed so that it can handle the 600 MW peak power required by the NLC design while maintaining high efficiency.Comment: 25 pages, 11 figure

    Analysis of eBook Lending: A Game-Theory Approach

    Retailers have seen a steady and continuous increase in eBooks sales in recent years. A new strategy to further promote eBook sales is to provide eBook lending option. For example, Amazon.com allows Kindle eBook buyers to lend their eBooks for 14 days. The free eBook lending option will add additional utility to eBook buyers such as exchanging for other eBooks or reducing uncertainties of purchasing new books. However, such strategy might cannibalize the retailers\u27 sales of print books. Using a game theory model, we explore whether the retailer will be better off to introduce the lending program. We derive the equilibrium price and identify the conditions under which the retailer can offer eBook lending option and generate more revenue

    Insecticide Use and Crop Selection: A South Dakota Case Study

    South Dakota has recently experienced a significant increase in the proportion of acres treated with insecticide. Unfortunately, data on insecticide usage by crop at the county level is not available. The following case study seeks to uncover the reasons for this increase by analyzing county-level data in South Dakota with a fixed effects panel regression. The study links the proportion of acres planted for a specific crop to the proportion of total acres treated with insecticide.     Structural genomics analysis of uncharacterized protein families overrepresented in human gut bacteria identifies a novel glycoside hydrolase.

    BackgroundBacteroides spp. form a significant part of our gut microbiome and are well known for optimized metabolism of diverse polysaccharides. Initial analysis of the archetypal Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron genome identified 172 glycosyl hydrolases and a large number of uncharacterized proteins associated with polysaccharide metabolism.ResultsBT_1012 from Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron VPI-5482 is a protein of unknown function and a member of a large protein family consisting entirely of uncharacterized proteins. Initial sequence analysis predicted that this protein has two domains, one on the N- and one on the C-terminal. A PSI-BLAST search found over 150 full length and over 90 half size homologs consisting only of the N-terminal domain. The experimentally determined three-dimensional structure of the BT_1012 protein confirms its two-domain architecture and structural analysis of both domains suggests their specific functions. The N-terminal domain is a putative catalytic domain with significant similarity to known glycoside hydrolases, the C-terminal domain has a beta-sandwich fold typically found in C-terminal domains of other glycosyl hydrolases, however these domains are typically involved in substrate binding. We describe the structure of the BT_1012 protein and discuss its sequence-structure relationship and their possible functional implications.ConclusionsStructural and sequence analyses of the BT_1012 protein identifies it as a glycosyl hydrolase, expanding an already impressive catalog of enzymes involved in polysaccharide metabolism in Bacteroides spp. Based on this we have renamed the Pfam families representing the two domains found in the BT_1012 protein, PF13204 and PF12904, as putative glycoside hydrolase and glycoside hydrolase-associated C-terminal domain respectively

    COVID-19, Crowdedness, and CMC Dining: An Agent-Based Model Approach to Reducing the Spread of COVID-19

    To make a COVID-safe return to in-person learning in the fall 2021 semester, Claremont McKenna College (CMC) created a new outdoor dining option to decrease the number of students inside the dining hall at one time: food trucks. However, crowding often occurs at both the inside and outside dining options. And so, we constructed an Agent-Based Model (ABM) to simulate the flow of students to the dining options over the lunch time hours. We use our ABM to investigate when over the lunch period crowding occurs and how often both or either option is crowded. Our analysis examines three different student behaviors namely, the ability to stick to an initial preference, the ability to sense crowding, and the ability to be influenced by other students. We find that the behavior that influences the level of crowding in the dining areas the most is having a strong preference for one of the dining areas. We also explore two different control measures that CMC could take to reduce crowding: adding another outdoor food option or increasing the amount of grab-and-go options.
