Comparison of data on Mutation Frequencies of Mice Caused by Radiation - Low Dose Model -
We propose LD(Low Dose) model, the extension of LDM model which was proposed
in the previous paper [Y. Manabe et al.: J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 81 (2012) 104004]
to estimate biological damage caused by irradiation. LD model takes account of
all the considerable effects including cell death effect as well as
proliferation, apoptosis, repair. As a typical example of estimation, we apply
LD model to the experiment of mutation frequency on the responses induced by
the exposure to low levels of ionizing radiation. The most famous and extensive
experiments are those summarized by Russell and Kelly [Russell, W. L. & Kelly,
E. M: Proc. Natl Acad. Sci. USA 79 (1982) 539-541], which are known as
'Mega-mouse project'. This provides us with important information of the
frequencies of transmitted specific-locus mutations induced in mouse
spermatogonia stem-cells. It is found that the numerical results of the
mutation frequency of mice are in reasonable agreement with the experimental
data: the LD model reproduces the total dose and dose rate dependence of data
reasonably. In order to see such dose-rate dependence more explicitly, we
introduce the dose-rate effectiveness factor (DREF). This represents a sort of
preventable effects such as repair, apoptosis and death of broken cells, which
are to be competitive with proliferation effect of broken cells induced by
irradiation.Comment: subimitting to J. Phys. Soc. Jpn, 32 pages, 8 figure

Perceptions of Blame in Intimate Partner Violence: The Role of the Perpetrator\u27s Ability to Arouse Fear of Injury in the Victim
Men are more likely to be blamed more for intimate partner violence (IPV) than are women who commit the same offense. However, because men are typically stronger and perceived as more physically aggressive than women are, perpetrator sex is confounded with masculinity and the ability to arouse fear in the victim. This study disentangled the construct of gender in understanding bystanders’ attributions of blame in IPV. Participants (N = 639) read a scenario in which the perpetrator’s sex (male/female) and gender identity (masculine/feminine), and the victim’s sex (male/female) were manipulated and rated how much they blamed the perpetrator and the perpetrator’s ability to arouse fear of injury in the victim. Results showed that male perpetrators (regardless of gender identity) who assaulted a female victim were attributed the most blame and were perceived as having the greatest ability to arouse victim fear. In contrast, feminine female perpetrators were attributed the least blame and perceived as arousing the least victim fear regardless of the victim’s gender. Furthermore, controlling for the perpetrator’s ability to arouse fear in the victim resulted in the elimination of the interaction effects for blame. This finding suggests that perpetrators’ ability to arouse fear is an underlying factor in bystanders’ attributions of blame

Fiber optic control system integration
A total fiber optic, integrated propulsion/flight control system concept for advanced fighter aircraft is presented. Fiber optic technology pertaining to this system is identified and evaluated for application readiness. A fiber optic sensor vendor survey was completed, and the results are reported. The advantages of centralized/direct architecture are reviewed, and the concept of the protocol branch is explained. Preliminary protocol branch selections are made based on the F-18/F404 application. Concepts for new optical tools are described. Development plans for the optical technology and the described system are included
Improved simulation of aerosol, cloud, and density measurements by shuttle lidar
Data retrievals are simulated for a Nd:YAG lidar suitable for early flight on the space shuttle. Maximum assumed vertical and horizontal resolutions are 0.1 and 100 km, respectively, in the boundary layer, increasing to 2 and 2000 km in the mesosphere. Aerosol and cloud retrievals are simulated using 1.06 and 0.53 microns wavelengths independently. Error sources include signal measurement, conventional density information, atmospheric transmission, and lidar calibration. By day, tenuous clouds and Saharan and boundary layer aerosols are retrieved at both wavelengths. By night, these constituents are retrieved, plus upper tropospheric, stratospheric, and mesospheric aerosols and noctilucent clouds. Density, temperature, and improved aerosol and cloud retrievals are simulated by combining signals at 0.35, 1.06, and 0.53 microns. Particlate contamination limits the technique to the cloud free upper troposphere and above. Error bars automatically show effect of this contamination, as well as errors in absolute density nonmalization, reference temperature or pressure, and the sources listed above. For nonvolcanic conditions, relative density profiles have rms errors of 0.54 to 2% in the upper troposphere and stratosphere. Temperature profiles have rms errors of 1.2 to 2.5 K and can define the tropopause to 0.5 km and higher wave structures to 1 or 2 km
Genetic Locus and Structural Characterization of the Biochemical Defect in the O-Antigenic Polysaccharide of the Symbiotically Deficient \u3cem\u3eRhizobium etli\u3c/em\u3e Mutant, CE166
The O-antigen polysaccharide (OPS) of Rhizobium etli CE3 lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is linked to the core oligosaccharide via an N-acetylquinovosaminosyl (QuiNAc) residue. A mutant of CE3, CE166, produces LPS with reduced amounts of OPS, and a suppressed mutant, CE166α, produces LPS with nearly normal OPS levels. Both mutants are deficient in QuiNAc production. Characterization of OPS from CE166 and CE166α showed that QuiNAc was replaced by its 4-keto derivative, 2-acetamido-2,6-dideoxyhexosyl-4-ulose. The identity of this residue was determined by NMR and mass spectrometry, and by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of its 2-acetamido-4-deutero-2,6-dideoxyhexosyl derivatives produced by reduction of the 4-keto group using borodeuteride. Mass spectrometric and methylation analyses showed that the 2-acetamido-2,6-dideoxyhexosyl-4-ulosyl residue was 3-linked and attached to the core-region external Kdo III residue of the LPS, the same position as that of QuiNAc in the CE3 LPS. DNA sequencing revealed that the transposon insertion in strain CE166 was located in an open reading frame whose predicted translation product, LpsQ, falls within a large family of predicted open reading frames, which includes biochemically characterized members that are sugar epimerases and/or reductases. A hypothesis to be tested in future work is that lpsQ encodes UDP-2-acetamido-2,6-dideoxyhexosyl-4-ulose reductase, the second step in the synthesis of UDP-QuiNAc from UDP-GlcNAc
