    Hearts-on Approach to Educational Leadership

    Get PDF
Christian educational leaders come equipped with an arsenal of skills, talents, and beliefs rooted in their faith. The synthesis of faith in their daily lives or “hearts-on” approach provides them a solid foundation. Communication is the most important skill for an effective leader. This article provides an overview of the critical elements of communication and their potential impact upon educational leadership. Several communication styles and strategies are discussed and clarified by biblically-inspired directives

Fragmentation And Segmentation: Marketing Global Benefits

    Get PDF
Though consumption culture and globalization are major themes impacting the modern landscape, there has been limited research in these areas due to, in part, the increasing fragmentation of markets. A case is made that the seemingly disparate views, cultural fragmentation and global segmentation can be harmonized. This paper presents a theoretical framework to understand how the fragmentation of markets and global segmentation strategies can be compatible. Due to the cultural convergence brought on by globalization and marketing intermediaries, global segments can be identified through the common needs sought by consumers.

Traditional To Modern Values: Chinas Opening And The Impact On Prestige Goods

    Get PDF
The younger generation in China has undergone a cultural shift away from what are considered traditional Chinese values (Adams, 2011; Speter, 2008). This movement toward Western-based individualistic values is hypothesized to result from the opening of China to capitalistic and modern media systems. This cross-cultural research analyzes an online survey of 304 Chinese individuals that will explore this cultural shift by employing Kahles (1983) Values scale. To further explore the similarities or differences, the ratings of several prestige goods based on their hedonistic value are studied, as compared to an American sample

    Category bias in facial memory

    Get PDF
Existing knowledge has been shown to interact with episodic information in a variety of memory tasks. The present study examined a known bias due to existing knowledge in the context of memory for facial features. Specifically, we examined if the category bias, a systematic error in remembering a target toward the prototypical location of its region, increased as a function of distance away from its prototypical location and if time and degree of distortion moderated the bias. We manipulated eye width along a horizontal axis to create a set of face stimuli. In Experiment 1, participants saw one face at a time, and after a short delay, they were asked to reproduce the location of one of the eyes and complete a recognition task. In Experiment 2, we increased the delay from 2000ms to 5000ms. We hypothesized and found that bias towards the prototype increased for the moderately distorted face conditions; however, the decrease in bias in the highly distorted conditions was not statistically significant. Additionally, bias did not increase over time. We discuss our results in the context of Huttenlocher et al.\u27s (1991) category adjustment model, as well as the practical implications of our study in the field of eyewitness memory

International Strategic Alliances: Identifying Objective Performance Measures

    Get PDF
With the acceleration of globalization, International Strategic Alliances (ISA) are increasingly playing a critical role in a firm’s strategic arsenal.  Despite its importance, measuring an ISA’s success is difficult due to the reticence of failing partnerships to announce these issues.  This paper presents an analysis of 29 alliances from 18 countries and 5 industries. The success or failure of these alliances was analyzed utilizing ROA, ROE, ROI, and operating margin as the variables of performance measurement. Discriminant Analysis demonstrates that operating margin correctly classifies the success of an alliance 70% of the time

Leakage Through a Channel Formed by a Gasket, a Sealing Surface, and a Filament Trapped Between Them

Plumbing for the transport of liquid Hydrogen or liquid Oxygen at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) is very critical. Every piece of hardware for handling such a hazardous cryogen is subject to testing prior to installation and use. Safe, realistic testing of all such hardware is prohibitively expensive, which leads, perforce, to expidients such as: (1) lead testing with non-flammable tracer fluids (e.g, liquid nitrogen) and (2) leak testing with room temperature tracer fluids (e.g. liquid helium). Such expedients undermine the realism of the tests. If however, one could apply rational fluid dynamics methods to derive a general analytical expression with which one could relate the throughput of gaseous Helium through a given leak channel to the throughput of liquid Hydrogen through the same channel, then one could recover much of the information that one would otherwise forfeit through these expedients. These facts lead to the following questions: (1) What would be an example of a generic flaw in a gasket?; and (2) How can one calculate the flow of fluid in it? The report addresses these questions. It considers a particular leak geometry, namely one formed by a gasket, a sealing surface, and a filament trapped between them (so that the cross section of the leak channel is a flat bottomed curvilinear triangle, two sides of which are circular arcs and which has cusps on all three corners)
