Two-dimensional photonic band-gap structures as quasi-metals
By considering waves that propagate out of the transverse plane, we show that common high index materials (eg GaAs) with a 2D array of air holes can act in some ways like a 3D photonic band-gap structure. In particular, we describe a dielectric "quasi-metal" that reflects all propagating light incident from free space
UV-induced refractive index changes in germanosilicate fibres
Photo-induced guided index changes approaching at both 633nm and 1.55µm, measured using a simple interferometric technique, are reported in germanosilicate single-mode optical fibres exposed to 266nm from the side
Photonic band structure of guided block modes in high index films fully etched through with periodic microstructure
By adapting the well-known 'zigzag' ray model for use with a periodic waveguide (i.e. replacing the plane wave rays with Bloch wave rays), we show that thin films of high refractive index, supported by a low index substrate and fully etched through with a periodic pattern, can support guided modes. From the dispersion relation of these guided Bloch modes, it is shown that the in-plane modal group velocity can be zero, suggesting applications in enhanced dipole-field interactions and control of spontaneous emission in waveguide lasers
Persistence of the efficacy of copper oxide wire particles against Haemonchus contortus in grazing South African goats
A study was conducted to examine the duration of anthelmintic effect of copper oxide wire particles (COWP) in grazing goats, as data for the persistence of efficacy of COWP in this host species is limited. Forty-eight indigenous male goats were infected naturally by grazing them on Haemonchus contortus-infected pasture. When the faecal egg count (FEC) in the goats was 3179 ± 540 eggs per gram of faeces (mean ± standard error), half the animals were treated with 4 g COWP (day 0; mean live weight = 25.5 ± 0.8 kg). Eight treated (COWP) and eight non-treated (CONTROL) goats were removed from the pasture on each of days 7, 28 and 56, maintained for 27 or 29 days in concrete pens and then humanely slaughtered for nematode recovery. Mean liver copper levels were in the high range in the goats removed from pasture at day 7 (treated: 191 ± 19.7 ppm; untreated: 120 ± 19.7 ppm; P = 0.022), but had dropped to normal levels at days 28 and 56. The mean H. contortus burdens of the treated versus the non-treated goats were, respectively, 184 ± 48 and 645 ± 152 for the goats removed from pasture at day 7 (71% reduction; P = 0.004), 207 ± 42 and 331 ± 156 at day 28 (37% reduction; P = 0.945) and 336 ± 89 and 225 ± 53 at day 56 (−49% reduction; P = 0.665). Weekly monitoring of FECs after treatment until slaughter indicated that the COWP-treated goats had lower FECs than the controls, the treatment main effect being significant at days 7, 28 and 56 (P < 0.01). The day main effect and the treatment × day interaction were only significant for the goats removed from pasture at day 28 (P ≤ 0.001). Packed cell volumes increased during the course of the experiment (day, P < 0.001), but the treatment main effect was significant only for the goats removed from pasture at day 28 (CONTROL 28 d, 28.65 ± 0.52% < COWP 28 d, 31.31 ± 0.52%; P < 0.001). No differences in live weight between groups were considered to be of any practical significance. The study indicated that persistence of efficacy of COWP is limited in goats, extending at most to 28 days after treatment. However, repeated COWP administration at three-month intervals may be safe, given that liver copper levels return to normal two to three months after COWP treatment
Dependence of direct detection signals on the WIMP velocity distribution
The signals expected in WIMP direct detection experiments depend on the
ultra-local dark matter distribution. Observations probe the local density,
circular speed and escape speed, while simulations find velocity distributions
that deviate significantly from the standard Maxwellian distribution. We
calculate the energy, time and direction dependence of the event rate for a
range of velocity distributions motivated by recent observations and
simulations, and also investigate the uncertainty in the determination of WIMP
parameters. The dominant uncertainties are the systematic error in the local
circular speed and whether or not the MW has a high density dark disc. In both
cases there are substantial changes in the mean differential event rate and the
annual modulation signal, and hence exclusion limits and determinations of the
WIMP mass. The uncertainty in the shape of the halo velocity distribution is
less important, however it leads to a 5% systematic error in the WIMP mass. The
detailed direction dependence of the event rate is sensitive to the velocity
distribution. However the numbers of events required to detect anisotropy and

Central Opioid Inhibition of Neuroendocrine Stress Responses in Pregnancy in the Rat Is Induced by the Neurosteroid Allopregnanolone
The hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is the major neuroendocrine stress response system. Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) neurons in the parvocellular paraventricular nucleus (pPVN) play a key role in coordinating responses of this system to stressors. The cytokine interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta), mimicking infection, robustly activates these CRH neurons via a noradrenergic input arising from the nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS). In late pregnancy, HPA axis responses to stressors, including IL-1 beta, are attenuated by a central opioid mechanism that auto-inhibits noradrenaline release in the PVN. Here we show that the neuroactive progesterone metabolite allopregnanolone induces these changes in HPA responsiveness to IL-1 beta in pregnancy. In late pregnancy, inhibition of 5 alpha-reductase (an allopregnanolone-synthesizing enzyme) with finasteride restored HPA axis responses (rapidly increased pPVN CRH mRNA expression, ACTH, and corticosterone secretion) to IL-1 beta. Conversely, allopregnanolone reduced HPA responses in virgin rats. In late pregnancy, activity of the allopregnanolone-synthesizing enzymes (5 alpha-reductase and 3 alpha-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase) was increased in the hypothalamus as was mRNA expression in the NTS and PVN. Naloxone, an opioid antagonist, restores HPA axis responses to IL-1 beta in pregnancy but had no additional effect after finasteride, indicating a causal connection between allopregnanolone and the endogenous opioid mechanism. Indeed, allopregnanolone induced opioid inhibition over HPA responses to IL-1 beta in virgin rats. Furthermore, in virgin rats, allopregnanolone treatment increased, whereas in pregnant rats finasteride decreased proenkephalin-A mRNA expression in the NTS. Thus, in pregnancy, allopregnanolone induces opioid inhibition over HPA axis responses to immune challenge. This novel opioid-mediated mechanism of allopregnanolone action may alter regulation of other brain systems in pregnancy
The Leptonic Higgs as a Messenger of Dark Matter
We propose that the leptonic cosmic ray signals seen by PAMELA and ATIC
result from the annihilation or decay of dark matter particles via states of a
leptonic Higgs doublet to leptons, linking cosmic ray signals of dark
matter to LHC signals of the Higgs sector. The states of the leptonic Higgs
doublet are lighter than about 200 GeV, yielding large and
event rates at the LHC. Simple models are
given for the dark matter particle and its interactions with the leptonic
Higgs, for cosmic ray signals arising from both annihilations and decays in the
galactic halo. For the case of annihilations, cosmic photon and neutrino

Dark matter and sub-GeV hidden U(1) in GMSB models
Motivated by the recent PAMELA and ATIC data, one is led to a scenario with
heavy vector-like dark matter in association with a hidden sector
below GeV scale. Realizing this idea in the context of gauge mediated
supersymmetry breaking (GMSB), a heavy scalar component charged under
is found to be a good dark matter candidate which can be searched for direct
scattering mediated by the Higgs boson and/or by the hidden gauge boson. The
latter turns out to put a stringent bound on the kinetic mixing parameter
between and : . For the typical range
of model parameters, we find that the decay rates of the ordinary lightest
neutralino into hidden gauge boson/gaugino and photon/gravitino are comparable,
and the former decay mode leaves displaced vertices of lepton pairs and missing
energy with distinctive length scale larger than 20 cm for invariant lepton
pair mass below 0.5 GeV. An unsatisfactory aspect of our model is that the
Sommerfeld effect cannot raise the galactic dark matter annihilation by more

Residual cognitive deficits 50 years after lead poisoning during childhood
The long term neurobehavioural consequences of childhood lead poisoning are not known. In this study adult subjects with a documented history of lead poisoning before age 4 and matched controls were examined with an abbreviated battery of neuropsychological tests including measures of attention, reasoning, memory, motor speed, and current mood. The subjects exposed to lead were inferior to controls on almost all of the cognitive tasks. This pattern of widespread deficits resembles that found in children evaluated at the time of acute exposure to lead rather than the more circumscribed pattern typically seen in adults exposed to lead. Despite having completed as many years of schooling as controls, the subjects exposed to lead were lower in lifetime occupational status. Within the exposed group, performance on the neuropsychological battery and occupational status were related, consistent with the presumed impact of limitations in neuropsychological functioning on everyday life. The results suggest that many subjects exposed to lead suffered acute encephalopathy in childhood which resolved into a chronic subclinical encephalopathy with associated cognitive dysfunction still evident in adulthood. These findings lend support to efforts to limit exposure to lead in childhood
75th Anniversary of ‘Existence of Electromagnetic-Hydrodynamic Waves’
We have recently passed the 75th anniversary of one of the most important
results in solar and space physics: Hannes Alfv\'en's discovery of Alfv\'en
waves and the Alfv\'en speed. To celebrate the anniversary, this article
recounts some major episodes in the history of MHD waves. Following an
initially cool reception, Alfv\'en's ideas were propelled into the spotlight by
Fermi's work on cosmic rays, the new mystery of coronal heating and, as
scientific perception of interplanetary space shifted dramatically and the
space race started, detection of Alfv\'en waves in the solar wind. From then
on, interest in MHD waves boomed, laying the foundations for modern remote
observations of MHD waves in the Sun, coronal seismology and some of today's
leading theories of coronal heating and solar wind acceleration. In 1970,
Alfv\'en received the Nobel Prize for his work in MHD, including these
discoveries. The article concludes with some reflection about what the history
implies about the way we do science, especially the advantages and pitfalls of
