ELAN as flexible annotation framework for sound and image processing detectors
Annotation of digital recordings in humanities research still is, to a largeextend, a process that is performed manually. This paper describes the firstpattern recognition based software components developed in the AVATecH projectand their integration in the annotation tool ELAN. AVATecH (AdvancingVideo/Audio Technology in Humanities Research) is a project that involves twoMax Planck Institutes (Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, Nijmegen,Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, Halle) and two FraunhoferInstitutes (Fraunhofer-Institut für Intelligente Analyse- undInformationssysteme IAIS, Sankt Augustin, Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz-Institute,Berlin) and that aims to develop and implement audio and video technology forsemi-automatic annotation of heterogeneous media collections as they occur inmultimedia based research. The highly diverse nature of the digital recordingsstored in the archives of both Max Planck Institutes, poses a huge challenge tomost of the existing pattern recognition solutions and is a motivation to makesuch technology available to researchers in the humanities
Nonlinearities and Effects of Transverse Beam Size in Beam Position Monitors (revised)
The fields produced by a long beam with a given transverse charge
distribution in a homogeneous vacuum chamber are studied. Signals induced by a
displaced finite-size beam on electrodes of a beam position monitor (BPM) are
calculated and compared to those produced by a pencil beam. The non-linearities
and corrections to BPM signals due to a finite transverse beam size are
calculated for an arbitrary chamber cross section. Simple analytical
expressions are given for a few particular transverse distributions of the beam
current in a circular or rectangular chamber. Of particular interest is a
general proof that in an arbitrary homogeneous chamber the beam-size

Surface-mediated attraction between colloids
We investigate the equilibrium properties of a colloidal solution in contact
with a soft interface. As a result of symmetry breaking, surface effects are
generally prevailing in confined colloidal systems. In this Letter, particular
emphasis is given to surface fluctuations and their consequences on the local
(re)organization of the suspension. It is shown that particles experience a
significant effective interaction in the vicinity of the interface. This
potential of mean force is always attractive, with range controlled by the
surface correlation length. We suggest that, under some circumstances,
surface-induced attraction may have a strong influence on the local particle
distribution
Impact of frontline service employees’ acculturation behaviors on customer satisfaction and commitment in intercultural service encounters
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore the impact of four types of acculturation behaviors of frontline service employees (assimilation, separation, integration, and marginalization) on customer satisfaction and customer commitment. Design/methodology/approach: In total, 377 ethnically diverse customers of a retail bank in New Zealand participated in this study. SmartPLS3 was used to test all the hypotheses. Findings: Assimilation and integration have positive effects on both customer satisfaction and commitment. Marginalization has a negative effect on both customer satisfaction and commitment but separation has a negative effect only on customer satisfaction and not on customer commitment. Research limitations/implications: Future research may validate and extend the authors findings in diverse cultural settings and use experimental method to explore the socio-psychological mechanisms underlying the influence of frontline service employees’ acculturation behaviors on customer satisfaction and commitment. Practical implications: This study will help managers understand the importance of service employees’ acculturation behaviors and develop suitable recruitment strategies and training programs to improve their impact on customer satisfaction and commitment. Originality/value: This study extends current research on intercultural service encounters by looking beyond the moderating effects of four types of service employees’ acculturation behaviors, to explore their direct effects on customer satisfaction and commitment
Multiepoch Radial Velocity Observations of L Dwarfs
We report on the development of a technique for precise radial-velocity
measurements of cool stars and brown dwarfs in the near infrared. Our technique
is analogous to the Iodine (I2) absorption cell method that has proven so
successful in the optical regime. We rely on telluric CH4 absorption features
to serve as a wavelength reference, relative to which we measure Doppler shifts
of the CO and H2O features in the spectra of our targets. We apply this
technique to high-resolution (R~50,000) spectra near 2.3 micron of nine L
dwarfs taken with the Phoenix instrument on Gemini-South and demonstrate a
typical precision of 300 m/s. We conduct simulations to estimate our expected
precision and show our performance is currently limited by the signal-to-noise
of our data. We present estimates of the rotational velocities and systemic
velocities of our targets. With our current data, we are sensitive to
companions with M sin i > 2MJ in orbits with periods less than three days. We
identify no companions in our current data set. Future observations with
improved signal-to-noise should result in radial-velocity precision of 100 m/s

Electrophoresis of a polyelectrolyte through a nanopore
A hydrodynamic model for determining the electrophoretic speed of a
polyelectrolyte through a nanopore is presented. It is assumed that the speed
is determined by a balance of electrical and viscous forces arising from within
the pore and that classical continuum electrostatics and hydrodynamics may be
considered applicable. An explicit formula for the translocation speed as a
function of the pore geometry and other physical parameters is obtained and is
shown to be consistent with experimental measurements on DNA translocation
through nanopores in silicon membranes. Experiments also show a weak dependence
of the translocation speed on polymer length that is not accounted for by the
present model. It is hypothesized that this is due to secondary effects that

An order parameter equation for the dynamic yield stress in dense colloidal suspensions
We study the dynamic yield stress in dense colloidal suspensions by analyzing
the time evolution of the pair distribution function for colloidal particles
interacting through a Lennard-Jones potential. We find that the equilibrium
pair distribution function is unstable with respect to a certain anisotropic
perturbation in the regime of low temperature and high density. By applying a
bifurcation analysis to a system near the critical state at which the stability
changes, we derive an amplitude equation for the critical mode. This equation
is analogous to order parameter equations used to describe phase transitions.
It is found that this amplitude equation describes the appearance of the
dynamic yield stress, and it gives a value of 2/3 for the shear thinning
exponent. This value is related to the mean field value of the critical

Dynamics of Post-Injection Fuel Flow in Mini-Sac Diesel Injectors Part 1: Admission of 1 External Gases and Implications for Deposit Formation
Samples of unadditized, middle distillate diesel fuel were injected through real-size optically accessible mini-sac diesel injectors into ambient air at common rail pressures of 250 bar and 350 bar respectively. High-resolution images of white light scattered from the internal mini-sac and nozzle flow were captured on a high-speed monochrome video camera. Following the end of each injection, the momentum-driven evacuation of fuel liquid from the mini-sac and nozzle holes resulted in the formation of a vapour cloud and bubbles in the mini-sac, and vapour capsules in the nozzle holes. This permitted external gas to gain entrance to the nozzle holes.
The diesel fuel in the mini-sac was observed to rotate with large initial vorticity, which decayed until the fuel became stationary. The diesel fuel remaining in the nozzle holes was observed to move inwards towards the mini-sac or outwards towards the nozzle exit in concert with the rotational flow in the mini-sac. The mini-sac bubbles’ internal pressure differences revealed that the bubbles must have contained previously dissolved oxygen and nitrogen. Under diesel engine operating conditions, this multi-phase mixture would be highly reactive and could initiate local pyrolysis and/or oxidation reactions. Finally, the dynamical behaviour of the diesel fuel in the nozzle holes would support the admission of external hot combustion gases into the nozzle holes, establishing the conditions for oxidation/pyrolysis reactions with surrounding liquid fuel films
Correlated particle dynamics in concentrated quasi-two-dimensional suspensions
We investigate theoretically and experimentally how the hydrodynamically
correlated lateral motion of particles in a suspension confined between two
surfaces is affected by the suspension concentration. Despite the long range of
the correlations (decaying as 1/r^2 with the inter-particle distance r), the
concentration effect is present only at short inter-particle distances for
which the static pair correlation is nonuniform. This is in sharp contrast with
the effect of hydrodynamic screening present in unconfined suspensions, where
increasing the concentration changes the prefactor of the large-distance
