    Under which conditions is carrier cooperation possible? A case study in a Seville marketplace

    The high volume of traffic originates two well-known problems in many cities: congestion and pollution. In recent years, a social phenomenon is emerging cooperation. This work is aimed at evaluating the circumstances under which transport cooperation is possible between different stakeholders operating in the same geographical area. To this end, a double survey process was conducted in a marketplace situated in the Seville City (Spain) centre. The first survey was designed to know the characteristics of the retailers and their preferences with respect to cooperation and regulations. A relational analysis between retailer features and their willingness to cooperate was carried out. After analysing the motivations for non-cooperation, a mixed proposal was designed and surveyed. Although the research was limited to a marketplace, the relevant data gathered from this double survey process highlights some implications: (a) the importance of personal relations in retailer cooperation; (b) a high volume of freight and the use of vans as on-street warehouses appear as significant motivations for non-cooperation; (c) forcing changes in the statu quo encourages cooperation.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (España) TEC2013-47286-C3-3-

    Thermal analysis and optimization of a heat regenerator composed of two coupled moving bed heat exchangers

    This work presents a study to optimize the performance of a heat regenerator composed by two coupled moving bed heat exchangers (MBHE). A MBHE is used to recover heat, from a hot gas stream, and the other one is used to preheat an air stream. A direct application might be a gasifier. The heat exchangers performance was studied in two cases, considering or not the conduction heat transfer in the solid phase. When the solid conduction is taken into account, a numerical solution is obtained, while an analytical solution is possible when the conduction terms are neglected. In both cases, the optimum values of bed length (in the air flow direction) and particle diameter were obtained from an exergy point of view. Finally, an energy optimization of the heat regenerator was carried out, obtaining the optimal heat regenerator dimensions as a function of gas velocity and gas flow rate.Publicad

The MBHE proposed can be analyzed as a cross flow heat exchanger where one of the phases is a moving granular medium. In the present work the exergy analysis of the MBHE is carried out over operation data of the exchanger obtained in two ways: a numerical simulation of the steady state problem and the analytical solution of the simplified (avoiding conduction terms) equations. The numerical simulation is carried over the two steady energy equations (fluid and solid), involving for the solid the convection heat transfer to the fluid and the diffusion term in both directions, and for the fluid only the convection heat transfer to the solid. The analytical solution is the wellknown solution of the simplified problem neglecting conduction effects.Publicad

    A viral system to optimise the daily drayage problem

    The intermodal transport chain can become more efficient by means of a good organisation of the drayage movements. Drayage in intermodal container terminals involves the pick up or delivery of containers at customer locations, and the main objective is normally the assignment of transportation tasks to the different vehicles, often with the presence of time windows. This paper focuses on a new approach to tackle the daily drayage problem by the use of viral system (VS).     Coherent structures and bubble-particle velocity in 2-D fluidized beds

    This work presents an experimental study to characterize ascending bubbles and granular velocity in the dense phase of a 2-D fluidized bed. Three different non-intrusive techniques based on images obtained with a high speed camera are developed, and applied to the images. First the bubble paths are characterized with time-average concentration maps and the bubble velocities are obtained, using a tracking algorithm over the mass centers of the bubbles. Finally, a PIV (particle image velocimetry) method is used to characterize the particle velocity vectors. This procedure is repeated for different bed aspect ratios, and different superficial gas velocities. This study analyzes the superficial gas velocity influence on the bed behavior, and how the bubble path configuration depends on the bed aspect ratio. The PIV measurements give us information on the location of the recirculation regions and the influence of the superficial gas velocity.Publicad

    Can solar tower plants withstand the operational flexibility of combined cycle plants?

    The aim of this work is to investigate the level of reliability of a 100 MWe solar tower plant operating as a load-following plant using actual operational data of combined cycle power plants. Despite the low cost, the steam generator has been identified as the main cause of unavailability of solar tower plants due to fatigue failures of tube-to-tubesheet joints, which can lead to steam/water leakage into the heat transfer fluid circuit, putting the plant performance at risk. A methodology based on the ASME code and EN standards is proposed to predict the fatigue failures of critical welded points of the steam generator, such as tube-to-tubesheet joints and other T-joints. The results show that the forced outages due to failures of the steam generator lead to an energy penalty that ranges over 230-453 GWh over the plant lifetime. The associated annual degradation rate ranges over 0.123-0.244%. Three tube leakage repair strategies are compared: tube-to-tubesheet weld crack repair, tube plugging and tube plugging with steam generator replacement. The latter strategy was shown to be the best practice because the lowest levelized cost of energy was obtained. In addition, the design of heat exchangers with a minimum of 20% extra area is highly recommended to not compromise the plant operation due to tube plugging.
