Fairy circle landscapes under the sea
Short-scale interactions yield large-scale vegetation patterns that, in turn,
shape ecosystem function across landscapes. Fairy circles, which are circular
patches bare of vegetation within otherwise continuous landscapes, are
characteristic features of semiarid grasslands. We report the occurrence of
submarine fairy circle seascapes in seagrass meadows and propose a simple model
that reproduces the diversity of seascapes observed in these ecosystems as
emerging from plant interactions within the meadow. These seascapes include two
extreme cases, a continuous meadow and a bare landscape, along with
intermediate states that range from the occurrence of persistent but isolated
fairy circles, or solitons, to seascapes with multiple fairy circles, banded
vegetation, and "leopard skin" patterns consisting of bare seascapes patterns
consisting of bare seascapes dotted with plant patches. The model predicts that
these intermediate seascapes extending across kilometers emerge as a
consequence of local demographic imbalances along with facilitative and
competitive interactions among the plants with a characteristic spatial scale
of 20 to 30 m, consistent with known drivers of seagrass performance. The
model, which can be extended to clonal growth plants in other landscapes
showing fairy rings, reveals that the different seascapes observed hold
diagnostic power as to the proximity of seagrass meadows to extinction points
that can be used to identify ecosystems at risks
A general model for vegetation patterns including rhizome growth
Vegetation patterns, a natural phenomenon observed worldwide, are typically
driven by spatially distributed feedback. However, the spatial colonization
mechanisms of clonal plants, driven by the growth of a rhizome, are usually not
considered in prototypical models. Here we propose a general equation for the
vegetation density that includes all main clonal-growth features as well as the
essential ingredients leading to spatial self-organization. This generic model
reproduces the phase diagram of a fully detailed model of clonal growth. The
relation of each term of the model with the mechanisms of clonal growth is
discussed
Optical properties of 2D Majorana nanowires
Master’s degree in Physics of Complex Systems at the Iniversitat de les Illes Balears, academin year 2013-2014.The main aim of the present work is to study the properties of the Majorana states in the
context of condensed matter, and more specifically the optical properties of hybrid semi-super-
conductor nanowires. First we explain the most important concepts referent to the Majorana
states. We address the importance for particle physics, for quantum computation and stress the
results with more impact in the field. In second place, we introduce the necessary methods to
describe Majorana states in two-dimensional systems. We introduce the Bogoliubov-deGennes
hamiltonian, we study its properties and the most important results necessary to compute the
optical properties. The third and final chapter is the novel contribution of this work. We present
first the used theoretical formalism, after that we study the results of the optical spectrum
changing dfferent parameters, the dependence on magnetic field, the light polarization effects
and the in
uence of temperature. This work gives guides for the experimental detection of
Majorana states in semiconductor nanowires with optical spectroscopy.Peer reviewe
Dynamics of posidonia oceanica meadows
In this thesis we study the dynamics of vegetation patterns in Posidonia oceanica meadows. In the second chapter of the thesis, based on previous knowledge of clonal-growth plants, we develop a coarse grained model that describes the evolution of the meadows. The model allows to reproduce the spatial features of vegetation approaching to the coast, where mortality increases. Additionally we study the relevance of the dependence on the angle of the model in the spatiotemporal dynamics. We conclude that the density of apices in different directions of growth homogenizes with time, only being enhanced those particular directions growing at the front facing outwards the meadow. The third chapter presents a systematic derivation of a simplified equation from the original model, reducing substantially the difficulty of the problem. We discuss the different approximations made and the validity of the equations derived. The fourth chapter focuses on an intermediate equation obtained from the derivation, that provides quantitative agreement with the original model. We study in detail its bifurcation diagram characterizing different patterns and localized structures. In the last part of this chapter we study the dynamics of vegetation fronts in the simplest one dimensional case. The last chapter tries to determine if the presence of hydrogen sulfide in the sediment, result of the spreading of organic matter due to water movement that later decomposes, is a valid long-range competition mechanism able to explain the formation of patterns. We conclude that patterns form as a result of this interaction. Furthermore, the model predicts an oscillatory instability of the homogeneous solution which creates very rich phase diagram with different dynamical behaviors still to explore

Distribution of growth directions in meadows of clonal plants
Clonal growth plants are abundant in both terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Some marine species are particularly important since they provide essential ecosystem services in the shores of all continents except Antarctica. For the appropriate modelization of clonal growth the discretization of the growth direction angle has to be carefully treated to correctly describe the dynamics of the meadow. Specifically, determining the minimum number of growth directions is important to maximize the efficiency of numerical simulations. We show that the presence of neutral modes in the growth direction angle tends to make the distribution of the growth directions uniform in the presence of noise, allowing us to choose the minimal number of discrete angles compatible with the branching. We also show that the formation of spatial patterns induces small differences in the population density within these different growth directions. We acknowledge financial support from Agencia Estatal de Investigación (AEI, Spain) and Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional under Project SuMaEco Grant No. RTI2018-095441-B-C22 (AEI/FEDER,UE) and the Spanish State Research Agency, through the Maria de Maeztu Program for units of Excellence in R&D (MDM-2017-0711). Electromagnetic absorption of semiconductor 2D Majorana nanowires
© 2015 IOP Publishing Ltd. We calculate the cross section for the electromagnetic absorption of planar 2D Majorana nanowires. The electromagnetic field is described in the dipole approximation. We discuss the signatures on the cross section of a near-zero-energy mode. A low energy peak for transverse polarization, absent in the longitudinal one, reveals the presence of the Majorana-like state. This peak is relatively robust against the thermal smearing of the level occupations. We consider the influence of optical masks hiding parts of the nanowire from the radiation. This work was funded by MINECO-Spain (grant FIS2011-23526), CAIB-Spain (Conselleria d'Educació, Cultura i Universitats) and FEDER.Peer Reviewe
Bifurcation structure of traveling pulses in Type-I excitable media
We have studied the existence of traveling pulses in a general Type-I excitable 1-dimensional medium. We have obtained the stability region and characterized the different bifurcations behind either the destruction or loss of stability of the pulses. In particular, some of the bifurcations delimiting the stability region have been connected, using singular limits, with the two different scenarios that mediated the Type-I local excitability, i.e. homoclinic (saddle-loop) and Saddle-Node on the Invariant Circle bifurcations. The existence of the traveling pulses has been linked, outside the stability region, to a drift pitchfork instability of localized steady structures.N
