Exact thermal properties of free-fermionic spin chains

    Get PDF
An exact description of integrable spin chains at finite temperature is provided using an elementary algebraic approach in the complete Hilbert space of the system. We focus on spin chain models that admit a description in terms of free fermions, including paradigmatic examples such as the one-dimensional transverse-field quantum Ising and XY models. The exact partition function is derived and compared with the ubiquitous approximation in which only the positive parity sector of the energy spectrum is considered. Errors stemming from this approximation are identified in the neighborhood of the critical point at low temperatures. We further provide the full counting statistics of a wide class of observables at thermal equilibrium and characterize in detail the thermal distribution of the kink number and transverse magnetization in the transverse-field quantum Ising chain.Comment: 36 pages, 11 figure

Uhlmann fidelity and fidelity susceptibility for integrable spin chains at finite temperature : exact results

    Get PDF
We derive the exact expression for the Uhlmann fidelity between arbitrary thermal Gibbs states of the quantum XY model in a transverse field with finite system size. Using it, we conduct a thorough analysis of the fidelity susceptibility of thermal states for the Ising model in a transverse field. We compare the exact results with a common approximation that considers only the positive-parity subspace, which is shown to be valid only at high temperatures. The proper inclusion of the odd parity subspace leads to the enhancement of maximal fidelity susceptibility in the intermediate range of temperatures. We show that this enhancement persists in the thermodynamic limit and scales quadratically with the system size. The correct low-temperature behavior is captured by an approximation involving the two lowest many-body energy eigenstates, from which simple expressions are obtained for the thermal susceptibility and specific heat

Full Counting Statistics of Topological Defects After Crossing a Phase Transition

We consider the number distribution of topological defects resulting from the finite-time crossing of a continuous phase transition and identify signatures of universality beyond the mean value, predicted by the Kibble-Zurek mechanism. Statistics of defects follows a binomial distribution with N\mathcal{N} Bernouilli trials associated with the probability of forming a topological defect at the locations where multiple domains merge. All cumulants of the distribution are predicted to exhibit a common universal power-law scaling with the quench time in which the transition is crossed. Knowledge of the distribution is used to discuss the onset of adiabatic dynamics and bound rare events associated with large deviations.Comment: Main text: 6 pages, 4 figures. A sound and complete proof system for probabilistic processes

    Get PDF
n this paper we present a process algebra model of probabilistic communicating processes based on classical CSP. To define our model we have replaced internal non-determinism by generative probabilistic choices, and external non-determinism by reactive probabilistic choices, with the purpose of maintaining the meaning of the classical CSP operators, once generalized in a probabilistic way. Thus we try to keep valid, as far as possible, the laws of CSP. This combination of both internal and external choice makes strongly difficult the definition of a probabilistic version of CSP. In fact, we can find in the current literature quite a number of papers on probabilistic processes, but only in a few of them internal and external choices are combined, trying to preserve their original meaning. Starting with a denotational semantics where the corresponding domain is a set of probabilistic trees with two kinds of nodes, representing the internal and external choices, we define a sound and complete proof system, with very similar laws to those of the corresponding CSP

Catalytic hydroprocessing of lignin β-O-4 ether bond model compound phenethyl phenyl ether over ruthenium catalysts

The catalytic hydroprocessing of phenethyl phenyl ether (PPE), a model compound of one of the most significant ether linkages within lignin structure, β-O-4, has been studied. Reactions were carried out using two ruthenium-based catalysts, supported on different materials: 3.8 wt.% Ru/C and 3.9 wt.% Ru/Al2O3. Aiming at studying the reaction mechanism, experiments were carried out at 150 °C and 25 bar in H2 atmosphere, with varying feed to catalyst mass ratios and reaction time. Differences between the relative importance of the steps of the mechanism were observed when using those two catalysts. The most significant finding was the predominance of the cleavage of Cβ-O bonds compared to the cleavage of the Caryl-O when using Ru/Al2O3 as catalyst; whereas with Ru/C, the two routes were nearly equivalent. It has been observed that the kinetic model describes the general tendencies of consumption and formation of the different products, but some over/under estimation of concentrations occurs. Finally, the effect of temperature was also explored by carrying out reactions at 100 and 125 °C, observing that decreasing temperature from 150 to 125 or 100 °C favored the dimer hydrogenation route versus the hydrogenolysis of the ether bonds

A maturity model for the information-driven SME

    Get PDF
Purpose: This article presents a maturity model for the evaluation of the information-driven decision-making process (DMP) in small and medium enterprises. This model is called “Simplified Holistic Approach to DMP Evaluation (SHADE)”. The SHADE model is based in the “Circumplex Hierarchical Representation of the Organization Maturity Assessment” (CHROMA) framework for characterizing the information-driven DMP in organizations Design/methodology/approach: The CHROMA-SHADE provides a competency evaluation methodology regarding the SME’s use of data for making better-informed decisions. This model groups the main factors influencing the information-driven DMP and classifies them into five dimensions: data availability, data quality, data analysis and insights, information use and decision-making. It addresses these dimensions systematically, delivering a framework for positioning the organization from an uninitiated to a completely embedded stage. The assessment consists of interviews based on a standardized open-ended questionnaire performed to key company personnel followed by an analysis of the answers and their scoring performed by an expert evaluator. Findings: The results of its application indicate this model is well adapted to the SMEs resulting useful for identifying strengths and weaknesses, thereby providing insights for prioritizing improvement actions. Originality/value: The CHROMA-SHADE model follows a novel, holistic approach that embraces the complexities inherent in a multiplicity of factors that, at the technological and management level, converge to enable more objective and better-supported decisions to be made through the intelligent use of information.Peer Reviewe
