    Mechanisms for AAA and QoS Interaction

Bern, Switzerland, July 2-4, 2003.The interaction between Authentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA) systems and the Quality of Service (QoS) infrastructure is to become a must in the near future. This interaction will allow rich control and management of both users and networks. DIAMETER and DiffServ are likely to turn into the future standards in AAA and QoS systems, but they are not designed to interact with each other. To face this, we propose a new Diameter-Diffserv interaction model and describe the Application Specific Module (ASM) implemented to allow this interaction. The ASM has been implemented and tested in a complete AAA-QoS IPv6 scenario

    Blocking efficacy of Small Coalitions in Myopic Economies

    We consider a continuum economy with infinitely many commodities and show that, for any positive var epsilon, the core of the economy coincides with the set of allocations which are not blocked by any coalition with measure less than var epsilon.     The effect of bandwidth in scale-free network traffic

    We model information traffic on scale-free networks by introducing the bandwidth as the delivering ability of links. We focus on the effects of bandwidth on the packet delivering ability of the traffic system to better understand traffic dynamic in real network systems. Such ability can be measured by a phase transition from free flow to congestion. Two cases of node capacity C are considered, i.e., C=constant and C is proportional to the node's degree. We figured out the decrease of the handling ability of the system together with the movement of the optimal local routing coefficient αc\alpha_c, induced by the restriction of bandwidth. Interestingly, for low bandwidth, the same optimal value of αc\alpha_c emerges for both cases of node capacity. We investigate the number of packets of each node in the free flow state and provide analytical explanations for the optimal value of αc\alpha_c. Average packets traveling time is also studied. Our study may be useful for evaluating the overall efficiency of networked traffic systems, and for allevating traffic jam in such systems.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    A double closed loop to enhance the quality of life of Parkinson's disease patients: REMPARK system

    This paper presents REMPARK system, a novel approach to deal with Parkinson's Disease (PD). REMPARK system comprises two closed loops of actuation onto PD. The first loop consists in a wearable system that, based on a belt-worn movement sensor, detects movement alterations that activate an auditory cueing system controlled by a smartphone in order to improve patient's gait. The belt-worn sensor analyzes patient's movement through real-time learning algorithms that were developed on the basis of a database previously collected from 93 PD patients. The second loop consists in disease management based on the data collected during long periods and that enables neurologists to tailor medication of their PD patients and follow the disease evolution. REMPARK system is going to be tested in 40 PD patients in Spain, Ireland, Italy and Israel. This paper describes the approach followed to obtain this system, its components, functionalities and trials in which the system will be validated.Postprint (published version

    The MobyDick Project: A Mobile Heterogeneous All-IP Architecture

Cracow, Poland: 17-20 June, 2001.This paper presents the current stage of an IP-based architecture for heterogeneous environments, covering UMTS-like W-CDMA wireless access technology, wireless and wired LANs, that is being developed under the aegis of the IST Moby Dick project. This architecture treats all transmission capabilities as basic physical and data-link layers, and attempts to replace all higher-level tasks by IP-based strategies. The proposed architecture incorporates aspects of mobile-IPv6, fast handover, AAA-control, and Quality of Service. The architecture allows for an optimised control on the radio link layer resources. The Moby dick architecture is currently under refinement for implementation on field trials. The services planned for trials are data transfer and voice-over-IP.Publicad

    The perceptions of faculty engaged in a curricular change to project based learning in an engineering school at Brazil

    The curricular change of an engineering school had as guideline the partial replacement of traditional school activities by Projects and Workshops, which put students as the main protagonists in the learning process, working actively. In this context, faculty were encouraged to propose activities that fulfil this request. Teachers from various specialties and even those who work in more advanced disciplines have submitted their proposals, which were offered to freshman students of an engineering course. The opening of the new curriculum began in 2015 when those activities were introduced in the course. The aim of this study is to know, analyze and evaluate the perception from teachers engaged in create these Projects and Workshops to this new curriculum. The survey was conducted from two focus groups, one with teachers’ proponents of Projects and other with teachers’ proponents of Workshops. The results show that the teachers attribute different meanings to the goals, strategies, evaluation and their own role in the process, though all the activities aim to ensure a common basis on engineering knowledge, which reflects the inductive character chosen in the curricular change.This work has been partially supported by projects COMPETE-POCI-01-0145-FEDER- 007043 and FCT-UID-CEC-00319-2013, from Portugalinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
