roots, causing radicular symptoms in the lower limbs. F-responses are late waves that come
from recurrent discharges of motor neurons depolarized antidromically, which may be
useful in evaluating root lesions.
The goal of this study is to evaluate the use of nerve conduction studies and Fresponses
of the Peronial nerve in the diagnosis of L5 radiculopathy and its correlation
with the degree of severity. We studied 47 subjects suffering from L5 radiculopathy,
compared with a control group consisting of 28 healthy individuals. We evaluate the
amplitudes of the deep Peroneal nerve CMAP, the superficial Peroneal SNAP, F-responses
in terms of minimal, mean, maximum latencies, chronodispersion and persistence. In order
to classify the severity of lesion of the root we also performed an electromyographic
evaluation.
Were noticed significant differences between both groups in the amplitude of the
deep Peroneal CMAP (p<0.0001), the minimum, mean and maximum F-waves latencies
(p<0.0001), and persistence (p≃0.014). All these parameters were significantly correlated
with severity of radiculopathy. We found that the F-wave latencies and chronodispersion
were progressively larger and persistent and the amplitude of motor conduction studies was
lower.
The factor that showed higher sensitivity in the diagnosis of this condition was the
F-wave maximum latency, 31.25%, and the less sensitive was the persistence, changed
only in 9.34% of individuals. Taking into account all the parameters evaluated in the Fresponses
we achieved a global sensitivity of this technique to 42.19%.
With this research we concluded that the nerve conduction studies and F-responses
may be useful as a supplement in the evaluation of lumbar radiculopathy, presenting a
considerable sensitivity to this pathology. One should not limit the study of this technique
for the evaluation of minimal F-wave latencies, but always include all other parameters,
thereby increasing its sensitivity. These techniques should be included in the L5
radiculopathies studies
Unions, Increasing Returns and Endogenous Fluctuations
We analyse the implications of unions (efficient bargaining) for multiplicity of stationary states and welfare, local indeterminacy, bifurcations and endogenous fluctuations (deterministic and stochastic). We use an overlapping generations model with external increasing returns to scale, where capital is the unique asset. We find that a slight increase in unions power may increase the levels of capital, employment and the welfare of all agents at the steady state. However multiple steady states may exist. Moreover, our results show that increasing returns to scale are a necessary condition for the emergence of deterministic endogenous fluctuations. However, we find that union's bargaining power can dramatically influence the local stability of the system. In fact, while an increase in the bargaining power of unions reduces the scope for local indeterminacy, the emergence of endogenous fluctuations, through Hopf bifurcations may become more likely when unions are present. Therefore, if the relevant trajectory exhibits endogenous fluctuations, steady state welfare is no longer the unique important element from a social point of view. In this case, whether unions are 'good' institutions or not may well depend on the trade off between efficiency and intergenerational equity that society is willing to take
Psychopathy and intimate partner violence
"First published online: January 24, 2018"Several studies found that psychopathy is an important predictor of criminal behavior in general and of intimate partner violence in particular. However, these conclusions are often based on scales with less well-established validity, and some inconsistent results have emerged with regard to the contribution of specific psychopathic facets to intimate partner violence. In a sample of 152 batterers from Portugal aged between 22 and 70 years old, we examined whether Psychopathy Checklist–Revised (PCL-R) total scores and the four facets (scored based on a semistructured interview and on file information) predicted the frequency of intimate partner violence. Two separate linear regression analyses were conducted controlling for criminal variables. PCL-R total scores positively predicted intimate partner violence frequency, above and beyond the criminal variables. As for the four facets, only the PCL-R affective facet held a significant effect in predicting intimate partner violence frequency after controlling for criminal variables. These results support the inclusion of psychopathy in risk assessments and treatment of perpetrators of intimate partner violence, particularly with regard to the affective deficits of the construct. The author(s) disclosed receipt of the following financial support for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article: This study was conducted at Psychology Research Center (UID/PSI/01662/2013), University of Minho, and supported by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology and the Portuguese Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education through national funds and cofinanced by European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) through COMPETE2020 under the PT2020 partnership agreement (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-007653). An application of the SMED methodology in an electric power controls company
Lean production is a strategy for high competiveness in manufacturing. The capability for economical manufacture in small batch sizes is an essential requirement for achieving lean production. This facilitates mixed production of several kinds of products to match varying product demand and can have a major impact in reducing inventories. An obvious requirement for this is the high frequency of equipment setups or product changeovers. This will not be attractive unless set-up times and costs can be reduced to competitive levels. The application of SMED can achieve this. SMED is a well-established methodology involving a set of techniques, methods and guidelines to achieve fast product changeovers at machines. This paper describes the application of SMED in the production process of plastic and metal components required for the assembly of several types of circuit breakers. The work was carried out during a short period of a few months under a master thesis project. Several important SMED strategies and solutions were implemented and evaluated in terms of their impact on productivity and on other manufacturing performance measures. Three specific machines were involved: a punch-bending machine, a punch press and an injection moulding machine. An important contribution was made by introducing innovative and simple solutions such as adapting tools and normalizing changeover operations. Most of the achieved results exceeded the initial expectations. Beyond the purely technical and economic benefits of SMED, better workstations’ ergonomic conditions were also attained. Besides the usual quantification of setup time reduction, other indicators were calculated, namely: work-in- process (WIP), annual setup cost and distance travelled by operators during the changeover process. Reductions of setup time varying from 59% to 90% were achieved. WIP of metal components was reduced from 17.05 to 7.74 days reducing more than 50% on the corresponding costs. A more impressive reduction on WIP was obtained for plastic parts, actually from 5 to 1.09 days of work corresponding to a WIP cost reduction of over 80%. The distance travelled by operators during the changeover process was dramatically reduced too: typically a reduction from 300 m to 10 m and less. The total annual cost savings projection, in this small area of parts production, is near 20,000 €. Although large benefits were obtained from the study, scope for further improvement still exists. In fact the objective of product changeover times below 10 minutes aimed by SMED was not achieved in one case.Universidade do MinhoFundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT
