    Simulations of the Light Scattering Properties of Metal/Oxide Core/Shell Nanospheres

    Given the importance of the optical properties of metal/dielectric core/shell nanoparticles, in this work we focus our attention on the light scattering properties, within the Mie framework, of some specific categories of these noteworthy nanostructures. In particular, we report theoretical results of angle-dependent light scattering intensity and scattering efficiency for Ag/Ag2O, Al/Al2O2, Cu/Cu2O, Pd/PdO, and Ti/TiO2 core/shell nanoparticles as a function of the core radius/shell thickness ratio and on a relative comparison. The results highlight the light scattering characteristics of these systems as a function of the radius/shell thickness ratio, helping in the choice of the more suitable materials and sizes for specific applications (i.e., dynamic light scattering for biological and molecular recognition, increasing light trapping in thin-film silicon, organic solar cells for achieving a higher photocurrent)

    Decomposition of stochastic flows with automorphism of subbundles component

    We show that given a GG-structure PP on a differentiable manifold MM, if the group G(M)G(M) of automorphisms of PP is big enough, then there exists the quotient of an stochastic flows phitphi_t by G(M)G(M), in the sense that ϕt=ξtρt\phi_t = \xi_t \circ \rho_t where ξtG(M)\xi_t \in G(M), the remainder ρt\rho_t has derivative which is vertical but transversal to the fibre of PP. This geometrical context generalizes previous results where MM is a Riemannian manifold and ϕt\phi_t is decomposed with an isometric component, see Liao \cite{Liao1} and Ruffino \cite{Ruffino}, which in our context corresponds to the particular case of an SO(n)-structure on MM.Comment: To appear in Stochastics and Dynamics, 201

    Electrical Properties of Self-Assembled Nano-Schottky Diodes

    A bottom-up methodology to fabricate a nanostructured material by Au nanoclusters on 6H-SiC surface is illustrated. Furthermore, a methodology to control its structural properties by thermal-induced self-organization of the Au nanoclusters is demonstrated. To this aim, the self-organization kinetic mechanisms of Au nanoclusters on SiC surface were experimentally studied by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, Rutherford backscattering spectrometry and theoretically modelled by a ripening process. The fabricated nanostructured materials were used to probe, by local conductive atomic force microscopy analyses, the electrical properties of nano-Schottky contact Au nanocluster/SiC. Strong efforts were dedicated to correlate the structural and electrical characteristics: the main observation was the Schottky barrier height dependence of the nano-Schottky contact on the cluster size. Such behavior was interpreted considering the physics of few electron quantum dots merged with the concepts of ballistic transport and thermoionic emission finding a satisfying agreement between the theoretical prediction and the experimental data. The fabricated Au nanocluster/SiC nanocontact is suggested as a prototype of nano-Schottky diode integrable in complex nanoelectronic circuits

    Geophysical Monitoring at Laboratory Scale of Aerobic Degradation of Diesel Oil

    The study is aimed to monitor bioremediation of hydrocarbon-polluted soils by measuring geophysical electromagnetic parameters. A previous study at lab scale showed that biostimulated indigenous microorganisms can remove diesel oil from soil successfully. Herein, we focused on the result of a laboratory test using Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) probes to measure electrical conductivity and dielectric permittivity in a column of sandy soil artificially contaminated with diesel oil. To simulate aerobic degradation of hydrocarbons, mesocosms were set-up in two Plexiglas columns (inner diameter = 13.8 cm) with 3.4 kg of soil (layer height = 14 cm) spiked with 0.24 kg of diesel oil and hydrated with 0.4 kg of Mineral Salt Medium for Bacteria. One mesocosm was aerated by air injection from the bottom of the column, while the other had only natural aeration due to air diffusion through the soil itself. In each column, electrical conductivity and dielectric permittivity were monitored by TDR probes for 105 days. TDR measurements were supported by microbiological and gas chromatographic analyses, along with SEM images. The findings showed that air injection heavily influenced the TDR monitoring, probably due to generation of air bubbles around the probe that interfered with probe-soil coupling. Therefore, the measurement accuracy was reduced in an irreversible way. In the non-aerated system, a slight (2%) and linear decrease of dielectric permittivity was observed over time, meanwhile electrical conductivity decreased by about 30%

    Etiological diagnosis, prognostic significance and role of electrophysiological study in patients with Brugada ECG and syncope.

    BACKGROUND: Syncope is considered a risk factor for life-threatening arrhythmias in Brugada patients. Distinguishing a benign syncope from one due to ventricular arrhythmias is often difficult, unless an ECG is recorded during the episode. Aim of the study was to analyze the characteristics of syncopal episodes in a large population of Brugada patients and evaluate the role of electrophysiological study (EPS) and the prognosis in the different subgroups. METHODS AND RESULTS: One hundred ninety-five Brugada patients with history of syncope were considered. Syncope were classified as neurally mediated (group 1, 61%) or unexplained (group 2, 39%) on the basis of personal and family history, clinical features, triggers, situations, associated signs, concomitant therapy. Most patients underwent EPS; they received ICD or implantable loop-recorder on the basis of the result of investigations and physician's judgment. At 62±45months of mean follow-up, group 1 showed a significantly lower incidence of arrhythmic events (2%) as compared to group 2 (9%, p<0.001). Group 2 patients with positive EPS showed the highest risk of arrhythmic events (27%). No ventricular events occurred in subjects with negative EPS. CONCLUSION: Etiological definition of syncope in Brugada patients is important, as it allows identifying two groups with different outcome. Patients with unexplained syncope and ventricular fibrillation induced at EPS have the highest risk of arrhythmic events. Patients presenting with neurally mediated syncope showed a prognosis similar to that of the asymptomatic and the role of EPS in this group is unproven

    A Combined Ion Implantation/Nanosecond Laser Irradiation Approach towards Si Nanostructures Doping

    The exploitation of Si nanostructures for electronic and optoelectronic devices depends on their electronic doping. We investigate a methodology for As doping of Si nanostructures taking advantages of ion beam implantation and nanosecond laser irradiation melting dynamics. We illustrate the behaviour of As when it is confined, by the implantation technique, in a SiO2/Si/SiO2multilayer and its spatial redistribution after annealing processes. As accumulation at the Si/SiO2interfaces was observed by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry in agreement with a model that assumes a traps distribution in the Si in the first 2-3 nm above the SiO2/Si interfaces. A concentration of 1014 traps/cm2has been evaluated. This result opens perspectives for As doping of Si nanoclusters embedded in SiO2since a Si nanocluster of radius 1 nm embedded in SiO2should trap 13 As atoms at the interface. In order to promote the As incorporation in the nanoclusters for an effective doping, an approach based on ion implantation and nanosecond laser irradiation was investigated. Si nanoclusters were produced in SiO2layer. After As ion implantation and nanosecond laser irradiation, spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements show nanoclusters optical properties consistent with their effective doping

    Fly fishing no-kill zones: a possible way to conjugate conservation issues, sustainable sport enhancement and local development in Alpine areas?

    The promotion of sustainable tourism and outdoor sports can represent an important way to couple environmental conservation strategies and economic enhancement in marginal and Alpine areas. In this context catch and release fly fishing zones can represent an interesting tool, although no data is available on the effectiveness of these practices on Alpine salmonid population dynamics. Salmonids are the main group of fish in alpine rivers and they are the only actively targeted by anglers. Aim of this work is filling this gap, with a pilot study on two no-kill zones (Po and Pellice rivers, NW Italy). We conducted a temporal and spatial comparison between free-fishing and catch and release management river sections, with a detailed analysis on the Po River site. Our results support the hypothesis that catch and release management allows a numerical increase in wild trout populations. In particular, we detected a massive and rapid increase in younger individuals, possibly linked to a stop on the removal of large-sized reproducers. Protecting trout by the implementation of this practice can at the same time allow the increase of sustainable economic development and sport in marginal areas

    Management of a Malpractice Dental Implant Case in a Patient with History of Oral Bisphosphonates Intake: A Case Report and Narrative Review of Recent Findings

    The present article aims to describe the management of a malpractice dental implant case in a patient with a history of oral bisphosphonates (BF) intake (alendronic acid every 15 days for 20 years) and to perform a narrative review of recently published articles (2019–2023) on the topic. A female patient rehabilitated with 18 nails in the mandible 20 years ago underwent two surgeries; the first one included the explantation of the nails; the second one included the insertion of two implants in the anterior region. At the last follow-up (21 months from the first surgery and 15 months from the second one) no complications nor episodes of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) were highlighted. Furthermore, 12 recent articles on the topic were reported and a narrative review was performed. Based on the narrative analysis, the topic related to dental implants in patients with BF intake seems to remain controversial. Most of the findings highlight how the evidence on both the safety of the treatment and the possibility to foresee the risk of onset based on preoperative factors seem to be scarce. The case described in the present article did not report any complications nor episodes of BRONJ. However, evidence from a single case report is scarce and more clinical trials are required to deepen the knowledge on the topic
