    Summary of an integrated ERTS-1 project and its results at the Missouri Geological Survey

    Use of the ERTS imagery involved the recognition and interpretation of various ground patterns. Analysis and application are tied to ongoing programs. Specific studies utilizing the imagery and NASA aircraft photography are: a statewide lake and dam inventory; assessment of flooding and floodprone areas along the Missouri portion of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers; land-use classification for several counties; structural features in selected areas; and Pleistocene features in northern Missouri. Though it has been suggested that repetitive coverage is not necessary for geologic studies, it is this specific feature along with the synoptic view of large portions of the State that provided the potential for the utilization of the ERTS imagery in Missouri. Other State agencies, Departments of Conservation, Agriculture, and Community Affairs, have expressed interest in the potential application of ERTS data in their respective fields

    Studying Within-Person Changes in Work Motivation in the Short and Medium- Term: You Will Likely Need More Measurement Points than You Think!

    En el estudio de la motivación laboral, el análisis intrapersona de datos provenientes de diseños longitudinales es hoy común en el área. Sin embargo, algunas características del diseño de investigación empleado pueden estar influyendo en la variabilidad intrapersona encontrada. En este trabajo analizamos cómo influye el número de medidas repetidas por participante en la varianza intrapersona de la motivación laboral. Mediante dos estudios (una revisión sistemática y un estudio empírico original) mostramos cómo el número de medidas repetidas influye significativamente en la varianza intrapersona encontrada, que llega a alcanzar valores máximos del 52%-54% sobre el total de la varianza. Para llegar a esos valores de varianza explicada en el caso de la motivación laboral se necesitarían un mínimo de 25-30 medidas repetidas para ser rigurosos en la medida de la varianza intraperson

    Atomic and itinerant effects at the transition metal x-ray absorption K-pre-edge exemplified in the case of V2_2O3_3

    X-ray absorption spectroscopy is a well established tool for obtaining information about orbital and spin degrees of freedom in transition metal- and rare earth-compounds. For this purpose usually the dipole transitions of the L- (2p to 3d) and M- (3d to 4f) edges are employed, whereas higher order transitions such as quadrupolar 1s to 3d in the K-edge are rarely studied in that respect. This is due to the fact that usually such quadrupolar transitions are overshadowed by dipole allowed 1s to 4p transitions and, hence, are visible only as minor features in the pre-edge region. Nonetheless, these features carry a lot of valuable information, similar to the dipole L-edge transition, which is not accessible in experiments under pressure due to the absorption of the diamond anvil pressurecell. We recently performed a theoretical and experimental analysis of such a situation for the metal insulator transition of (V(1-x)Crx)2O3. Since the importance of the orbital degrees of freedom in this transition is widely accepted, a thorough understanding of quadrupole transitions of the vanadium K-pre-edge provides crucial information about the underlying physics. Moreover, the lack of inversion symetry at the vanadium site leads to onsite mixing of vanadium 3d- and 4p- states and related quantum mechanical interferences between dipole and quadrupole transitions. Here we present a theoretical analysis of experimental high resolution x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the V pre-K edge measured in partial fluorescence yield mode for single crystals. We carried out density functional as well as configuration interaction calculations in order to capture effects coming from both, itinerant and atomic limits
