    The academic outcomes of first-in-family in an Australian university: an exploratory study.

    Although the first-generation and first-in-family status (FIF) of university students has been of intense interest in the USA, it has received very little consideration in Australia. The present research redressed this imbalance by investigating the academic outcomes of FIF undergraduate students at a large, public, Australian university. Undergraduate students (N = 227) who were enrolled in education, nursing and liberal arts degrees completed an online survey. Data are representative of typical gender enrolment patterns for these degrees. In contrast to US research, there was no clear relationship between socioeconomic status and FIF status in this sample. Consistent with US research, FIF students had poorer academic outcomes than non-FIF students. However, this difference was only significant after the first-year of study when students were less likely to receive scaffolded learning support within courses. FIF students were more likely than non-FIF students to seek support from university services. The implications of these results for Australian universities are considered

    Greece, to discuss systemic sclerosis (SSc) and related connective tissue diseases (CTDs). SSc is a clinically heterogeneous and complex disease that is characterized by vascular dysfunction, vascular and extravascular fibrosis, and characteristic immune derangements, and for which few treatment options are available. The aims of the CTD International Scientific Advisory Board were threefold: to define the role of local mediators in CTDs, in particular to identify the nature of the initial insult in CTDs and to consider the role of genetic perturbations in CTDs; to translate what has been learned from clinical trials into clinical practice and to evaluate current treatment options for CTDs and their complications; and to address future directions for the management of CTDs and associated rare diseases, based on the biologic mechanisms elucidated.     Collateral Estoppel

    The doctrine of collateral estoppel involves the use of an old judgment in a new action to prevent the relitigation of issues resolved by that old judgment. At common law, use of the doctrine required that the party using collateral estoppel and the party against whom it was used be the same as the parties to the prior judgment. This common law requirement of mutuality has been relaxed and since the United States Supreme Court\u27s 1979 decision in ParklaneHoisery Co. v. Shore, the strict common law requirement of mutuality has all but completely vanished. In Parklane the Court sanctioned the use of collateral estoppel by a plaintiff who was a stranger to the original suit against a defendant who was party to that suit. The courts\u27 search for fair results and judicial economy in the application of the doctrine led to this application of the doctrine in circumstances in which the parties were not mutual. This note traces the un- steady course which the doctrine of collateral estoppel traveled before Parklane. The significance of the Court\u27s decision in Parklane is then analyzed. Finally, post-Parklane applications of collateral estoppel are discussed, including the effect of the use of collateral estoppel on the seventh amendment right to jury trial and its impact on substantive areas of law

    Continuous-time VIX dynamics: on the role of stochastic volatility of volatility

    This paper examines the ability of several different continuous-time one- and two-factor jump-diffusion models to capture the dynamics of the VIX volatility index for the period between 1990 and 2010. For the one-factor models we study affine and non-affine specifications, possibly augmented with jumps. Jumps in one-factor models occur frequently, but add surprisingly little to the ability of the models to explain the dynamic of the VIX. We present a stochastic volatility of volatility model that can explain all the time-series characteristics of the VIX studied in this paper. Extensions demonstrate that sudden jumps in the VIX are more likely during tranquil periods and the days when jumps occur coincide with major political or economic events. Using several statistical and operational metrics we find that non-affine one-factor models outperform their affine counterparts and modeling the log of the index is superior to modeling the VIX level directly
