The Effects of Specific Behavioral Interventions on Vocal Stereotypy: A Systematic Review

    Get PDF
Vocal stereotypy is a pervasively interfering behavior for many children with autism spectrum disorders. This behavior interferes with acquisition of new skills, language development, and social development. Researchers in the field of applied behavior analysis have examined and identified a variety of antecedent-based interventions and consequence-based interventions to treat vocal stereotypy either in isolation or as a part of a larger treatment package. Systematic reviews are an effective tool practitioners can use to access a large body of research in a condensed version that present the most critical information in a concise way. By using this tool, practitioners can be confident they are accessing evidence-based research in their field that allows them to make data-driven treatment decisions. The purpose of this systematic review was to present the reader with detailed information regarding the available antecedent-based and consequence-based interventions that have been identified in the literature and to present a focused summary on the evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of noncontingent reinforcement (NCR), and antecedent-based intervention, and response interruption and redirection (RIRD), a consequence-based intervention. Fourteen studies met the necessary inclusion criteria for the in-depth review and were analyzed according to the critical variables across the studies. The results of this review indicate highly favorable outcomes when NCR and RIRD are used either alone or as a part of a treatment protocol in order to reduce the problematic behavior of vocal stereotypy. Limitations of the systematic review, ideas for future research, and implications of this studyā€™s results were also discussed

An analytical method for designing low noise helicopter transmissions

    Get PDF
The development and experimental validation of a method for analytically modeling the noise mechanism in the helicopter geared power transmission systems is described. This method can be used within the design process to predict interior noise levels and to investigate the noise reducing potential of alternative transmission design details. Examples are discussed

Commuting to Garden: Subsisting on Bell Island

On a windy afternoon in August of 2015, Fred Parsons and his daughter Cheyenne showed us their greenhouse made of recycled lumber ā€” the muffled sound of wind chimes fading as we moved away from their back porch. The greenhouse was filled with colours and smells of tomato, cucumber, carrot, beet, and mint. Outside, there were more plants, including green beans, rhubarb, strawberries, and raspberries. The year before, they had also cultivated potatoes and onions. In late summer and early fall, the two go berry picking. Their devotion to self-provisioning was evident in their thriving plants as well as winter preserves. Beyond their own tight-knit family unit, Fred, his wife Miranda, and Cheyenne are generous neighbours. When a friend fell ill and requested fresh blueberries, Fred picked five buckets for her in one day. As Fred put it, during the summer months ā€œEvery day Iā€™m at this. Every day.

The Perils of Prescribed Grade Distributions: What Every Medical Educator Should Know

    Get PDF
A common practice in medical education is to create a prescribed distribution of grades or ratings so that only a certain percentage of students receive the highest marks. This approach typically is employed to curb grade inflation and as a means to help faculty distinguish outstanding performers. Despite the well-intentioned reasoning for using prescribed grade distributions, a number of associated problems and probable consequences may result from this practice. Thus, the purpose of this article was to discuss the assumptions underlying this potentially unwise practice, the defensibility of this evaluation practice in the high-stakes arena of medical education, and the unintended consequences that such practices and policies may have on a student body and the larger educational environment

    V. problem presentation and advice-giving on a home birth helpline

The rate of home births in the UK is very low (around 2%) and many women who would like to give birth at home find it impossible to get midwifery cover or are advised of medical contraindications. The Home Birth Helpline offers support and expertise for women in this situation. Based on the analysis of 80 recorded calls, this article uses conversation analysis (CA) to explore how callers present their reason for calling the helpline, and what this shows about the culturally shared medicalized culture of birth. This research is an example of feminist CA in that it contributes both to the study of childbirth as a key women's health issue and to the study of helpline interaction from a conversation analytic perspectiv
