Abstract: Sustainable development is a “durable development” that is systematic and long-term devel-opment of countries ensuring strong relationship between societal and environmental security with economic progress. The concept of sustainable development is essential for pre-service teachers to realize because the country is on its way to progress and industrialization and their role as future teach-ers is important. Hence, this paper investigates aims to determine pre-service teachers’ concept of sus-tainable development. It is important that the concept of sustainable development should be clear to teachers because it determines how effective they can teach the concept to their students.  A qualitative research design utilizing questionnaires, interviews, and focused group discussions reveal the miscon-ceptions of the pre-service teachers on sustainable development.  The result of the present research will be utilized to create a program that will assist them in preparing lessons that integrates the concept of sustainable development successfully. Key Words: misconceptions on sustainable development, pre-service teachers concept of sustainable development, integration of the sustainable development concept on science lessonsAbstrak: Pembangunan berkelanjutan adalah “pembangunan tahan lama” yang merupakan pembangun-an sistematis dan jangka panjang negara untuk menjamin hubungan yang kuat antara keamanan sosial dan lingkungan dengan kemajuan ekonomi. Participatory Action Research on a Remote Teaching Practicum

    Get PDF
The pandemic has adversely affected teaching practicum as a culminating activity of pre-service teacher training. Teacher education institutions were forced to transform their programs into flexible modalities rapidly. In this participatory action research, the institutional remote practicum program was developed according to the preparation, actualization, mentoring, and evaluation phases. The researchers used qualitative and mixed-method strategies in certain research phases. The data gathered implied that the remote practicum program developed can be an example of how to implement the different guidelines and policies for flexible practice teaching. Pre-service teachers' experiences in the implementation of the research seem to indicate that the program is responsive to their preparations as beginning teachers. The results also imply that the program's performance is efficient and effective

The practice of mentoring student teachers seeks the much needed intervention and reform in the preparation of future teacher professionals who will eventually implement the K-12 Curriculum in the Philippines. The present study investigated on the perception of student teachers on the way they were mentored during their practice teaching in the selected partner schools. Additionally, this paper presents the beliefs and practices of cooperating teachers which student teachers perceive to be effective in the mentoring process. Data gathered from surveys and interviews with student teachers and cooperating teachers for this study pointed the strengths of the mentoring program as well as pitfalls that need to be addressed. The cooperating teachers in the different partner schools identified elements which are believed to be areas of concern that make them feel the need to undergo capability building. The findings presented here are intended to inform the development of policies in building cooperating teachers‟ capability for effective mentoring

The James Webb Space Telescope Mission

Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least 4m4m. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the 6.5m6.5m James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. We cite detailed reports on the design and the measured performance on orbit.Comment: Accepted by PASP for the special issue on The James Webb Space Telescope Overview, 29 pages, 4 figure

Finishing the euchromatic sequence of the human genome

    Get PDF
The sequence of the human genome encodes the genetic instructions for human physiology, as well as rich information about human evolution. In 2001, the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium reported a draft sequence of the euchromatic portion of the human genome. Since then, the international collaboration has worked to convert this draft into a genome sequence with high accuracy and nearly complete coverage. Here, we report the result of this finishing process. The current genome sequence (Build 35) contains 2.85 billion nucleotides interrupted by only 341 gaps. It covers ∼99% of the euchromatic genome and is accurate to an error rate of ∼1 event per 100,000 bases. Many of the remaining euchromatic gaps are associated with segmental duplications and will require focused work with new methods. The near-complete sequence, the first for a vertebrate, greatly improves the precision of biological analyses of the human genome including studies of gene number, birth and death. Notably, the human enome seems to encode only 20,000-25,000 protein-coding genes. The genome sequence reported here should serve as a firm foundation for biomedical research in the decades ahead

K12 Science Program in the Philippines: Student Perception on its Implementation

    No full text
Abstract It is the aim of this research to determine the perception of students on the new science curriculum in terms of the concepts they learn, the skills they acquire, and the values and attitude they develop. This research also aims to assess how judicious science teachers implement the new curriculum. To achieve such goal, a qualitative survey method was utilized. The respondents of this research are 216 grade 8 students of the selected schools in Metro Manila. Upon the analysis of the data gathered it has been found that most students agree with the items in the questionnaire as regards the three learning domains being evaluated (Mode = 4). The students also perceive that teachers judiciously implemented the new science curriculum (Mode = 4)

Worldview Assimilation Method (WAM): Effects on Student Behavior and Conceptual Understanding in Science Institute for Teaching and Learning Worldview Assimilation Method (WAM): Effects on Student Behavior and Conceptual Understanding in Science

Abstract Worldview Assimilation Method is a researcher designed teaching approach that investigates the effect of students' acquired knowledge, experiences, and personal beliefs on their behavior and conceptual understanding. Two sections of Grade 6 in Jubilee Christian Academy were randomly assigned as to WAM or conventional group and were exposed to the respective teaching approaches. Student behavior for both groups was observed using the same checklist. Both groups were also administered with the same pre and post test for conceptual understanding test. Two-samples-test Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test revealed that the students under WAM have a higher behavioral mean score than the students under the conventional method. The t-test for the conventional group and the WAM group showed that there is a significant difference between the pretest and the posttest scores
