Work family conflict among public school principals

    Get PDF
Being a school principal is not an easy job. There never seems to be enough time to devote to everything and everyone that need attention. The days are often long and mentally exhausting. Research suggests that for principals, finding a healthy balance between work and family life can be challenging. The purpose of this study was to explore the topic of how the principalship affects work-family balance. An online survey was conducted, which asked principals to report their perceptions regarding their personal levels of work-family conflict. A total of 310 principals across the state of Indiana participated in the survey. The results were analyzed both descriptively and inferentially. Principals’ demographics were compared statistically to their reported levels of work-family conflict, revealing several areas of significant difference, shedding light on the topic of principals’ work-family conflict. This research is important as it adds to our knowledge of the demanding role of school principal, and assists future and current principals in their efforts towards finding balance between work and family. This dissertation outlines all of the areas that were found to be statistically significant, discusses the implications of these results, provides recommendations for practitioners, and makes suggestions for further research. Study of aerodynamic technology for single-cruise engine V/STOL fighter/attack aircraft

    Get PDF
A conceptual design analysis is performed on a single engine V/STOL supersonic fighter/attack concept powered by a series flow tandem fan propulsion system. Forward and aft mounted fans have independent flow paths for V/STOL operation and series flow in high speed flight. Mission, combat and V/STOL performance is calculated. Detailed aerodynamic estimates are made and aerodynamic uncertainties associated with the configuration and estimation methods identified. A wind tunnel research program is developed to resolve principal uncertainties and establish a data base for the baseline configuration and parametric variations

Outdoor Pig Production: A Pasture-farrowing Herd in Western Iowa

    Get PDF
Seven years of production records of an outdoor farrowing herd in western Iowa are summarzied. The average size of the herd was 68 sows. The herd was a one-litter system, i.e., sows were farrowed once and sold. Replacement gilts were saved annually to farrow at 1 year of age. Average conception rate was 80% and the prewean mortality was 12%. Weaning occurred at 4–6 weeks. An average of 7.9 pigs/litter was weaned. These results give approximate levels of performance for an outdoor farrowing herd by using the one litter system in western Iowa. Budgets using these values should generally be cost competitive

Use of Oats in Swine Diets Fed in Deep-bedded Hoop Barns

The use of hoop barns for feeding finishing pigs has expanded rapidly in Iowa. A recent survey reported over 2,000 hoops used for finishing pigs in Iowa. Extensive work on feeding pigs in hoops has been conducted by Iowa State University researchers. Finishing pigs were fed for 3 years in bedded hoop structures and a confinement building with slotted floors in central Iowa. When summer and winter feeding periods for 3 years were combined, the work showed that the finishing pigs in hoops ate more feed, grew faster, and required more feed per unit of liveweight gain than confinement pigs. Also, the hoop pigs were fatter with smaller loin muscle area and a lower percentage of carcass lean and carcass yield compared with confinement pigs. The efficiency of lean gain also was poorer for the hoop pigs

Yields of Corn, Soybeans, and Alfalfa in Western Iowa: 1990 to 2011

The ISU Western Research Farm, Castana, Iowa is one of the oldest in Iowa dating to 1946. It also has a unique location in the loess hills of western Iowa. The research farm was set up to study the deep loess soils, particularly crop production and soil conservation methods. Although the work at the research farm has transitioned away from traditional plot work, yields of major crops grown at the farm, and climate data are collected each year. Crop yields are a reflection of current technologies and weather. In western Iowa, rainfall is especially critical and is often the limiting factor

Pig Crushing Mortality by Hut Type In Outdoor Farrowing

    Get PDF
This study emphasizes the difference in pig crushing mortality rates in various outdoor farrowing hut types and suggests that huts with a larger floor space may help reduce preweaning pig crushing. Mothering ability by the sow may be particularly important in outdoor systems where the sows have greater freedom and mobility

In vitro and in vivo studies of the trypanocidal properties of WRR-483 against Trypanosoma cruzi.

BackgroundCruzain, the major cysteine protease of Trypanosoma cruzi, is an essential enzyme for the parasite life cycle and has been validated as a viable target to treat Chagas' disease. As a proof-of-concept, K11777, a potent inhibitor of cruzain, was found to effectively eliminate T. cruzi infection and is currently a clinical candidate for treatment of Chagas' disease.Methodology/principal findingsWRR-483, an analog of K11777, was synthesized and evaluated as an inhibitor of cruzain and against T. cruzi proliferation in cell culture. This compound demonstrates good potency against cruzain with sensitivity to pH conditions and high efficacy in the cell culture assay. Furthermore, WRR-483 also eradicates parasite infection in a mouse model of acute Chagas' disease. To determine the atomic-level details of the inhibitor interacting with cruzain, a 1.5 A crystal structure of the protease in complex with WRR-483 was solved. The structure illustrates that WRR-483 binds covalently to the active site cysteine of the protease in a similar manner as other vinyl sulfone-based inhibitors. Details of the critical interactions within the specificity binding pocket are also reported.ConclusionsWe demonstrate that WRR-483 is an effective cysteine protease inhibitor with trypanocidal activity in cell culture and animal model with comparable efficacy to K11777. Crystallographic evidence confirms that the mode of action is by targeting the active site of cruzain. Taken together, these results suggest that WRR-483 has potential to be developed as a treatment for Chagas' disease

    Alternate Possibilities and their Entertainment

    Get PDF
In this paper it is argued that Frankfurt's and Strawson's defenses of compatibilism are insufficient due to neglected features of the role of alternate possibilities in assigning moral responsibility. An attempt is made to locate more adequately the genuine source of tension between free will and determinism, in a crowding phenomenon in the view of an action which our concept of responsibility has not grown up coping with. Finally, an argument is made that due to the nature of belief we can believe the thesis of determinism only if it is false, lending support to incompatibilism.</jats:p

Here we present optical constants covering a broad wavelength range, from the visible to the far infrared, for Titan aerosol analogs produced in the Titan Haze Simulation (THS) experiment at Ames COSmIC facility, as well as other exoplanet-relevant materials

Miller's (2009) WACC model: An extension

    No full text
Miller (2009a) presents an analysis of the weighted average cost of capital WACC model. The paper attracts debate which uses a variety of repayment schedules to support the arguments raised. We present an extension of Miller's (2009a) WACC model in a world where interest is tax deductible and debt principal is paid at maturity. We also present the corresponding model for the required rate of return on levered equity which is a vital input to the WACC model. Since these models are unwieldy, we explore an alternative definition of the WACC. These models provide insights into the debate on Miller's (2009a) paper
