Massive photons and Dirac monopoles: electric condensate and magnetic confinement
We use the generalized Julia-Toulouse approach (GJTA) for condensation of
topological currents (charges or defects) to argue that massive photons can
coexist consistently with Dirac monopoles. The Proca theory is obtained here
via GJTA as a low energy effective theory describing an electric condensate and
the mass of the vector boson is responsible for generating a Meissner effect
which confines the magnetic defects in monopole-antimonopole pairs connected by
physical open magnetic vortices described by Dirac brane invariants, instead of

Dynamics of kinks in the Ginzburg-Landau equation: Approach to a metastable shape and collapse of embedded pairs of kinks
We consider initial data for the real Ginzburg-Landau equation having two
widely separated zeros. We require these initial conditions to be locally close
to a stationary solution (the ``kink'' solution) except for a perturbation
supported in a small interval between the two kinks. We show that such a
perturbation vanishes on a time scale much shorter than the time scale for the
motion of the kinks. The consequences of this bound, in the context of earlier
studies of the dynamics of kinks in the Ginzburg-Landau equation, [ER], are as
follows: we consider initial conditions whose restriction to a bounded
interval have several zeros, not too regularly spaced, and other zeros of
are very far from . We show that all these zeros eventually disappear
by colliding with each other. This relaxation process is very slow: it takes a

Vanishing DC holographic conductivity from a magnetic monopole condensate
We show how to obtain a vanishing DC conductivity in 3-dimensional strongly
coupled QFT's using a massive 2-form field in the bulk that satisfies a special
kind of boundary condition. The real and imaginary parts of the AC conductivity
are evaluated in this holographic setup and we show that the DC conductivity
identically vanishes even for an arbitrarily small (though nonzero) value of
the 2-form mass in the bulk. We identify the bulk action of the massive 2-form
with an effective theory describing a phase in which magnetic monopoles have
condensed in the bulk. Our results indicate that a condensate of magnetic
monopoles in a 4-dimensional bulk leads to a vanishing DC holographic

Analysis of HIV-1 expression level and sense of transcription by high-throughput sequencing of the infected cell.
Next-generation sequencing offers an unprecedented opportunity to jointly analyze cellular and viral transcriptional activity without prerequisite knowledge of the nature of the transcripts. SupT1 cells were infected with a vesicular stomatitis virus G envelope protein (VSV-G)-pseudotyped HIV vector. At 24 h postinfection, both cellular and viral transcriptomes were analyzed by serial analysis of gene expression followed by high-throughput sequencing (SAGE-Seq). Read mapping resulted in 33 to 44 million tags aligning with the human transcriptome and 0.23 to 0.25 million tags aligning with the genome of the HIV-1 vector. Thus, at peak infection, 1 transcript in 143 is of viral origin (0.7%), including a small component of antisense viral transcription. Of the detected cellular transcripts, 826 (2.3%) were differentially expressed between mock- and HIV-infected samples. The approach also assessed whether HIV-1 infection modulates the expression of repetitive elements or endogenous retroviruses. We observed very active transcription of these elements, with 1 transcript in 237 being of such origin, corresponding on average to 123,123 reads in mock-infected samples (0.40%) and 129,149 reads in HIV-1-infected samples (0.45%) mapping to the genomic Repbase repository. This analysis highlights key details in the generation and interpretation of high-throughput data in the setting of HIV-1 cellular infection
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and future alcohol outcomes: Examining the roles of coping and enhancement drinking motives among young men.
Although there is evidence that Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) symptoms are positively related to alcohol use and related problems among young adults, little research has examined the mechanisms that might explain this association. In response, this study examined the mediating effects of coping and enhancement drinking motives on the prospective associations between ADHD symptoms and alcohol outcomes.
Participants (N = 4,536) were young men from the Cohort Study on Substance Use Risk Factors. Measures of ADHD symptoms and those of drinking motives, heavy episodic drinking (HED) and alcohol use disorder symptoms were used from the baseline and 15-month follow-up assessments.
Findings indicated that the associations of ADHD-inattention symptoms with alcohol use disorder (AUD) symptoms and with HED were partially and completely mediated through drinking motives, respectively, whereas drinking motives did not mediate the ADHD-hyperactivity/impulsivity-symptoms-alcohol outcomes associations.
Results indicated that coping and enhancement motives partially explained the ADHD-inattention symptoms-subsequent alcohol outcomes association. These findings suggest that interventions targeting enhancement and coping motives may help prevent problematic drinking among young men with elevated ADHD-inattention symptoms
The Microbe browser for comparative genomics
The Microbe browser is a web server providing comparative microbial genomics data. It offers comprehensive, integrated data from GenBank, RefSeq, UniProt, InterPro, Gene Ontology and the Orthologs Matrix Project (OMA) database, displayed along with gene predictions from five software packages. The Microbe browser is daily updated from the source databases and includes all completely sequenced bacterial and archaeal genomes. The data are displayed in an easy-to-use, interactive website based on Ensembl software. The Microbe browser is available at http://microbe.vital-it.ch/.
