International audienceThis article aims at emphasizing the link there is between recognition and democracy in social philosophy. Based on Axel Honneth's reflections on recognition, the article focuses on the concept of democracy as a social ideal.

Gender Quota inside the Boardroom: Female Directors as New Key Players?

This paper examines whether women’s situation within French boards has improved following theadoption of a board-level gender quota in 2011. To do so, we focus on the individual role of femaledirectors as proxied by their fees. Our sample includes the listed companies belonging to the SBF120index over the 2006-2014 period. We first show that the quota has succeeded in opening the doors ofboardrooms to new, unseasoned female directors (not present on the director labor market before theregulation). These unseasoned female directors have distinctive characteristics (in terms of independence, experience, age, nationality, etc.) as compared to other board members. More importantly, weshow that women, whether unseasoned or seasoned, experience an inner glass ceiling, with “positional”gender segregation within French boards. In particular, companies have failed so far to open the accessof the most important board committees (namely monitoring committees: audit, compensation andnomination) to women. It results in a within-firm gender fees gap of 5%. Overall, the quota has ratheramplified this segregation process, with an increase in the average within-firm gender fees gap

Results of the Prolonged Use of Subcutaneous Continuous Infusion of Hydrocortisone in a Man with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia

    Get PDF
This is a case report study of a young man with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH) who has been treated during 2 years by a subcutaneous continuous infusion hydrocortisone (SCIH) to optimize his treatment. Hydrocortisone was delivered via an insulin infusion device. We also studied the evolution of testicular adrenal rest tumors (TARTs) and the quality of life through SF36 survey. Four rates were determined, with a total of 47 mg per day. Biochemical parameters were normalized at 2 months. The SF36 questionnaire showed a progress of well-being. The weight decreased to 106 kg, that is, −5 kg (height: 1.71 m). Unfortunatly, there was no change of the TARTs. Two episodes of dermohypodermitis, with abscess at the infusion site, were observed. This case demonstrates the feasibility of prolonged SCIH therapy in patients with CAH, reporting positive effects on quality of life and on BMI

Les retours tactile et kinesthésique améliorent la perception de distance en réalité virtuelle

National audienceResearch spanning psychology, neuroscience and HCI found that depth perception distortion is a common problem in virtual reality. This distortion results in depth compression, where users perceive objects closer than their intended distance. Studies suggested that cues, such as audio and haptic, help to solve this issue. We focus on haptic feedback and investigate how force feedback compares to tactile feedback within peripersonal space in reducing depth perception distortion. Our study (N=12) compares the use of haptic force feedback, vibration haptic feedback, a combination of both or no feedback. Our results show that both vibration and force feedback improve depth perception distortion over no feedback (8.3 times better distance estimation than with no haptic feedback vs. 1.4 to 1.5 times better with either vibration or force feedback on their own). Participants also subjectively preferred using force feedback, or a combination of force and vibration feedback, over no feedback.

Managing fleet capacity effectively under second-hand market redistribution

Full text : http://archimer.ifremer.fr/doc/00102/21288/19569.pdf (Author's final draft, 0.54 Mo)International audienceFishing capacity management policies have been traditionally implemented at national level with national targets for capacity reduction. More recently, capacity management policies have increasingly targeted specific fisheries. French fisheries spatially vary along the French coastline and are associated to specific regions. Capacity management policies however ignore the capital mobility associated with second-hand vessel trade between regions. This is not an issue for national policies but could limit the effectiveness of regional capacity management policies. A gravity model and a random-effect Poisson regression model are used to analyse the determinants and spatial extent of the second-hand market in France. This study is based on panel data from the French Atlantic Ocean between 1992 and 2009. The trade flows between trading partners is found to increase with their sizes and to be spatially concentrated. Despite the low trade flows between regions, a net impact analysis shows that fishing capacity is redistributed by the second-hand market to regions on the Channel and Aquitaine from central regions. National capacity management policies (constructions/destructions) have induced a net decrease in regional fleet capacity with varying magnitude across regions. Unless there is a change of policy instruments or their scale of implementation, the operation of the second-hand market decreases the effectiveness of regional capacity management policies in regions on the Channel and Aquitaine
