Survey of The Qualifications of Kansas High School Coaches With Recommendations For Certification

The question, should athletic coaches be required to have basic qualifications, has been a very controversial one for a number of years. With the increased knowledge of youth and better education methods, has come the certification of instructors in other fields. Along with this has progressed the idea that athletic coaches should have sane type of basic requirements, because they have as their responsibility the health and welfare of our youth for a number of hours almost daily. Due to the shortage of teachers in Kansas, people in the education 2 and coaching fields have been rather reluctant to enforce any requirements for athletic coaches, therefore in many instances an instructor is hired for classroom teaching and if he has any knowledge of a sport, he is also given the job of coaching athletics. The administrators hire instructors, but the instructors are more apt to be fired for poor coaching than for poor classroom work. Athletic coaching demands more than a vague knowledge of a. sport. To be an athletic coach, a person should have at least a knowledge of the fundamentals and theory of the sport he is to coach, and also a working knowledge of how to prevent injuries and how to take care of them in case they should happen. How can a coach prepare himself in the aforementioned way? By completing a physical education major is one way. Many high school coaches of athletics in the state of Kansas have completed a physical education major or minor even thou hit is not required. The author, a physical education graduate student and a future coach, has undertaken this study in an attempt to find out whether the athletic coaching profession is a recognized profession which demands well trained and high caliber personnel and also has set standards for entrance, or is it a pseudo profession . Is there only a deceptive resemblance between the coaching profession and a bonafide profession? It would follow, that if there are no definite standards which must be met to enter the field, then coaching as a profession has only a deceptive resemblance and does not represent a bonafide profession. The men 3 entering the coaching profession surely need some type of qualifications, if they are to up- grade the profession and make their contributions to society

Diagnostic errors in paediatric cardiac intensive care

AbstractIntroductionDiagnostic errors cause significant patient harm and increase costs. Data characterising such errors in the paediatric cardiac intensive care population are limited. We sought to understand the perceived frequency and types of diagnostic errors in the paediatric cardiac ICU.MethodsPaediatric cardiac ICU practitioners including attending and trainee physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and registered nurses at three North American tertiary cardiac centres were surveyed between October 2014 and January 2015.ResultsThe response rate was 46% (N=200). Most respondents (81%) perceived that diagnostic errors harm patients more than five times per year. More than half (65%) reported that errors permanently harm patients, and up to 18% perceived that diagnostic errors contributed to death or severe permanent harm more than five times per year. Medication side effects and psychiatric conditions were thought to be most commonly misdiagnosed. Physician groups also ranked pulmonary overcirculation and viral illness to be commonly misdiagnosed as bacterial illness. Inadequate care coordination, data assessment, and high clinician workload were cited as contributory factors. Delayed diagnostic studies and interventions related to the severity of the patient’s condition were thought to be the most commonly reported process breakdowns. All surveyed groups ranked improving teamwork and feedback pathways as strategies to explore for preventing future diagnostic errors.ConclusionsPaediatric cardiac intensive care practitioners perceive that diagnostic errors causing permanent harm are common and associated more with systematic and process breakdowns than with cognitive limitations.</jats:sec

K-ion slides in Prussian blue analogues

We study the phenomenology of cooperative off-centering of K+ ions in potassiated Prussian blue analogues (PBAs). The principal distortion mechanism by which this off-centering occurs is termed a “K-ion slide”, and its origin is shown to lie in the interaction between local electrostatic dipoles that couple through a combination of electrostatics and elastic strain. Using synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction measurements, we determine the crystal structures of a range of low-vacancy K2M[Fe(CN)6] PBAs (M = Ni, Co, Fe, Mn, Cd) and establish an empirical link between composition, temperature, and slide-distortion magnitude. Our results reflect the common underlying physics responsible for K-ion slides and their evolution with temperature and composition. Monte Carlo simulations driven by a simple model of dipolar interactions and strain coupling reproduce the general features of the experimental phase behavior. We discuss the implications of our study for optimizing the performance of PBA K-ion battery cathode materials and also its relevance to distortions in other, conceptually related, hybrid perovskites

Valuing initial teacher education at Master's level

    Get PDF
The future of Master’s-level work in initial teacher education (ITE) in England seems uncertain. Whilst the coalition government has expressed support for Master’s-level work, its recent White Paper focuses on teaching skills as the dominant form of professional development. This training discourse is in tension with the view of professional learning advocated by ITE courses that offer Master’s credits. Following a survey of the changing perceptions of Master’s-level study during a Post Graduate Certificate in Education course by student teachers in four subject groups, this paper highlights how the process of professional learning can have the most impact on how they value studying at a higher level during their early professional development
