A student training manual for running the HYSIM computer simulation program

    Get PDF
Hyprotech\u27s HYSIM computer simulation program is used in the chemical processing industry (CPI) to simulate unit operations, which aid in the design of various different kinds of processing plants. It is important then that chemical engineering students should gain early exposure to a simulation program such as HYSIM, in order to facilitate their comprehension of process engineering design work using this type of program, and to bridge the gap between the textbook knowledge they gain of unit operations in the classroom with some of the actual process engineering work-a-day methods available for solving problems. The objective of this work was to provide detailed examples of HYSIM computer runs for various unit operations, plus other areas covered by HYSIM, such as pressure drop calculations and pipe sizing. Each example contains a description of the process, a process flow diagram and the steps needed to be taken by the HYSIM user to run that particular example. The results obtained from the run are shown at the end of each example. These examples are being supplied as a guide or training method so that the user can gain the proficiency in running the HYSIM program, that will then translate to the solving of other similar problems, given either in the classroom or in the field

The testing of semiconductor-based adsorption modified photosensitive sensors for their response to a volatile organic compound, oxygen, humidity, and heating

Two thin-film sensors, composed of different thicknesses (approximately 0.5 microns and 4.5 microns) of a cadmium sulfide layer coated with Rhodamine B fluorescent dye on a glass substrate, were tested for change in photoconductivity due to exposure to different concentrations of gaseous organic molecules in the parts-per-million (ppm) range. It was theorized that the gaseous organic molecules would adsorb to the dyed semiconductor surface and that some energy would be transferred to the adsorbed analyte rather than to the cadmium sulfide semiconductor layer through the dye, thereby decreasing the photoconductivity of the surface in an amount proportional to the analyte concentration to which the sensor was exposed. Toluene was chosen as a typical organic vapor to test for the purpose of this study. [1] The effect of oxygen, nitrogen, helium, humidity and temperature on these sensors was also studied and the results obtained are outlined in this report. Both sensors were able to detect toluene concentrations in the parts-per-million range in the absence of oxygen. The thicker sensor had a photoelectric response that was about ten times as large as the thinner sensor, presumably due to a greater porosity and surface area. The sensor with the thicker cadmium sulfide layer was able to detect toluene in the 0 to 30 ppm concentration range in air at room temperature. At a concentration higher than 30 ppm of toluene, it is believed that the concentration of toluene was enough to provide an alternate pathway for the surface current, which led to a sudden increase in the surface photoconductivity. The thicker sensor was also tested at a higher temperature and it was shown that a higher temperature led to lower resistances, presumably due to the desorbing of gases from the sensor surface plus an increased ability of electrons to partially overcome some of the intergrain resistance at the polycrystalline grain boundaries in the cadmium sulfide layer. [2] Results from experimental studies showed that this sensor could detect both the presence and concentration of oxygen in the sensor chamber with the 0.5 and 4.5 micron cadmium sulfide thin-film sensor, whether the surface had a Rhodamine B dye layer or not. The dye was shown, however, to increase the photosensitivity of the sensor. Exposure of the sensor to a large enough quantity of a vaporous polar substance like water, caused a decrease of the resistance due to the provision of an alternate pathway for the surface current, and in certain instances, concentrations could be predicted

Fair Trade certified coffee estates: can Fair Trade USA promote workers' well-being, empowerment and gender equity in Brazilian and Nicaraguan coffee plantations?

2019 Summer.Includes bibliographical references. In 2012, Fair Trade USA began to certify coffee estates, previously restricted to small producer organizations, to expand the benefits of fair trade to hired laborers. This dissertation research analyzes the implications of the Fair Trade USA certification of coffee plantations in 1) bolstering workers' well-being, 2) empowerment, and 3) gender equity on certified coffee estates in Brazil and Nicaragua. Using a cross-national comparative design and multi-methods qualitative techniques, this study examines how the Fair Trade USA certification of coffee estates plays out differently within each national context. The findings suggest that Fair Trade USA fosters worker's well-being in coffee estates when operating below national labor legislation and sectoral standards, and indicate variation, unevenness and limitations in bolstering worker's empowerment. This research reports marginal gender equity impact on rural workers

pH parametric pumping : an examination of different feed locations for a two and three column process with the same flow patterns and pH distribution

    Get PDF
PH parametric pumping is used to separate protein mixtures of hemoglobin and Albumin. In this thesis, modifications to a two-column process, where the fluid stage flow pattern and the pH distributions were constant, were explored. These modifications consisted of: changes in the feed stream inlet and outlet locations, changes in the amount of feed itself, and an addition of another column and reservoir to the original two-column process. The results were obtained through computer simulation. Results indicate that the batch or no-feed two and three column processes yield better separations of the two proteins than the same processes with feed streams. The different feed location cases were ranked and this listing can be found in the results section for the two and three column processes. Also, the conclusion section contains an overall ranking list of both processes. Results also indicate that the separations obtained for the three-column process were better overall than for the two-column process, and that smaller feed amounts for both processes yielded better separations

Serrated Polyposis: An Enigmatic Model of Colorectal Cancer Predisposition

Serrated polyposis has only recently been accepted as a condition which carries an increased personal and familial risk of colorectal cancer. Described over four decades ago, it remains one of the most underrecognized and poorly understood of all the intestinal polyposes. With a variety of phenotypic presentations, it is likely that serrated polyposis represents a group of diseases rather than a single entity. Further, neoplastic progression in serrated polyposis may be associated with premature aging in the normal mucosa, typified by widespread gene promoter hypermethylation. From this epigenetically altered field, arise diverse polyps and cancers which show a range of molecular features. Despite a high serrated polyp count, only one-third of colorectal cancers demonstrate a BRAF V600E mutation, the molecular hallmark of the canonical serrated pathway, suggesting that though multiple serrated polyps act as a marker of an abnormal mucosa, the majority of CRC in these patients arise within lesions other than BRAF-mutated serrated polyps

In countries like Nigeria and Jamaica, that have a long history of colonization and imposition of the English language, the usage of creole languages in everyday communication. These languages are also part of the identity of the people, however they are still perceived in demeaning ways. When writers use creole languages to represent their cultures we cannot ignore a move away of the paradigm that literature should be written in a standard language. The present word aims to analyze how the Jamaican and Nigerian Marlon James, and Chinua Achebe, insert creole languages inside the novel A Brief History of Seven Killing and the short story, Civil Peace. To do so, it is necessary to define creole languages and other important concepts to understand them such as language contact and pidgins. This work will be approach how each author build the language he uses to represent the people of his country
