On the Truncated Pareto Distribution with applications
The Pareto probability distribution is widely applied in different fields
such us finance, physics, hydrology, geology and astronomy. This note deals
with an application of the Pareto distribution to astrophysics and more
precisely to the statistical analysis of mass of stars and of diameters of
asteroids. In particular a comparison between the usual Pareto distribution and
its truncated version is presented. Finally a possible physical mechanism that
produces Pareto tails for the distribution of the masses of stars is suggested.Comment: 10 pages 6 figure
Scintillation and charge extraction from the tracks of energetic electrons in superfluid helium-4
An energetic electron passing through liquid helium causes ionization along
its track. The ionized electrons quickly recombine with the resulting positive
ions, which leads to the production of prompt scintillation light. By applying
appropriate electric fields, some of the ionized electrons can be separated
from their parent ions. The fraction of the ionized electrons extracted in a
given applied field depends on the separation distance between the electrons
and the ions. We report the determination of the mean electron-ion separation
distance for charge pairs produced along the tracks of beta particles in
superfluid helium at 1.5 K by studying the quenching of the scintillation light
under applied electric fields. Knowledge of this mean separation parameter will
aid in the design of particle detectors that use superfluid helium as a target
material.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure
miR-345 in metastatic colorectal cancer: a non-invasive biomarker for clinical outcome in non-KRAS mutant patients treated with 3rd line cetuximab and irinotecan.
INTRODUCTION: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have important regulatory functions in cellular processes and have shown promising potential as prognostic markers for disease outcome in patients with cancer. The aim of the present study was to find miRNA expression profiles in whole blood that were prognostic for overall survival (OS) in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) treated with cetuximab and irinotecan.
METHODS: From 138 patients with mCRC in 3rd line therapy with cetuximab and irinotecan in a prospective phase II study, 738 pretreatment miRNAs were isolated and profiled from whole blood using the TaqMan MicroRNA Array v2.0. Mutation status of KRAS, BRAF, and PI3KCA was known.
RESULTS: After Bonferroni adjustment, 6 miRNAs: (miR-345, miR-143, miR-34a*, miR-628-5p, miR-886-3p and miR-324-3p), were found associated with short OS. miR-345 was the strongest prognostic miRNA, significant in the full cohort and in the non-KRAS mutant population. miR-345, as a continuous variable in the full cohort, resulted in a hazard ratio (HR) of 2.38 per IQR (CI 95%: 1.8-3.1, P-value = 2.86e-07, Bonferroni adjusted, univariable analysis) and a HR = 1.75 per IQR (CI 95%: 1.24-2.48, P-Wald = 1.45e-03) in the multivariable analysis adjusted for gender, age, KRAS, PI3KCA and performance status. miR-345 was prognostic in progression-free survival (PFS) with a HR = 1.63 per IQR (CI 95%: 1.25-2.114, P-Wald = 2.92e-4) in the multivariable analysis. In addition, high miR-345 expression was associated with lack of response to treatment with cetuximab and irinotecan.
CONCLUSION: We identified miR-345 in whole blood as a potential biomarker for clinical outcome. MiR-345 was a single prognostic biomarker for both OS and PFS in all patients and also in the non-KRAS mutant population
Putting theory oriented evaluation into practice
Evaluations of gaming simulations and business games as teaching devices are typically end-state driven. This emphasis fails to detect how the simulation being evaluated does or does not bring about its desired consequences. This paper advances the use of a logic model approach which possesses a holistic perspective that aims at including all elements associated with the situation created by a game. The use of the logic model approach is illustrated as applied to Simgame, a board game created for secondary school level business education in six European Union countries
Hybrid fiber reinforcement and crack formation in cementitious composite materials
The use of different types of fibers simultaneously for reinforcing cementitious
matrices is motivated by the concept of a multi-scale nature of the
crack propagation process. Fibers with different geometrical and mechanical properties
are used to bridge cracks of different sizes from the micro- to the macroscale.
In this study, the performance of different fiber reinforced cementitious
composites is assessed in terms of their tensile stress-crack opening behavior. The
results obtained from this investigation allow a direct quantitative comparison of
the behavior obtained from the different fiber reinforcement systems. The research
described in this paper shows that the multi-scale conception of cracking and the
use of hybrid fiber reinforcements do not necessarily result in an improved tensile
behavior of the composite. Particular material design requirements may nevertheless
justify the use of hybrid fiber reinforcements.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) - SFRH / BD / 36515 / 200
Spectrum of the Y=2 Pentaquarks
By assuming a mass formula for the spectrum of the Y=2 pentaquarks, where the
chromo-magnetic interaction plays a main role, and identifying the lightest
state with the Theta^+(1540), we predict a spectrum in good agreement with the
few I=0 and I=1 candidates proposed in the past.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, LaTe
Mechanical Effects of the Nonuniform Current Distribution on HTS Coils for Accelerators Wound With REBCO Roebel Cable
Future high-energy accelerators will need very high magnetic fields in the range of 20 T. The EuCARD-2 WP10 Future Magnets collaboration is aiming at testing HTS-based Roebel cables in an accelerator magnet. The demonstrator should produce around 17 T, when inserted into the 100-mm aperture of Feather-M2 13-T outsert magnet. HTS Roebel cables are assembled from meander-shaped REBCO-coated conductor tapes. In comparison with fair level of uniformity of current distribution in cables made out of round Nb-Ti or Nb3Sn strands, current distribution within the coils wound from Roebel cables is highly nonhomogeneous. It results in nonuniform electromagnetic force distribution over the cable that could damage the very thin REBCO superconducting layer. This paper focuses on the numerical models to describe the effect of the nonhomogeneous current distribution on stress distribution in the demonstrator magnet designed for the EuCARD-2 project. Preliminary results indicate that the impregnation bonding between the cable glass fiber insulation and layer-to-layer insulation plays a significant role in the pressure distribution at the cable edges. The stress levels are safe for Roebel cables. Assuming fully bonded connection at the interface, the stresses around the edges are reduced by a large factor
Engineering a C-Phase quantum gate: optical design and experimental realization
A two qubit quantum gate, namely the C-Phase, has been realized by exploiting
the longitudinal momentum (i.e. the optical path) degree of freedom of a single
photon. The experimental setup used to engineer this quantum gate represents an
advanced version of the high stability closed-loop interferometric setup
adopted to generate and characterize 2-photon 4-qubit Phased Dicke states. Some
experimental results, dealing with the characterization of multipartite
entanglement of the Phased Dicke states are also discussed in detail.Comment: accepted for publication on EPJ
Characterization of gallium arsenide X-ray mesa p-i-n photodiodes at room temperature
Two GaAs mesa p+-i-n+ photodiodes intended for photon counting X-ray spectroscopy, having an i layer thickness of 7 μm and diameter of 200 μm, have been characterized electrically, for their responsivity at the wavelength range 580 nm to 980 nm and one of them for its performance at detection of soft X-rays, at room temperature. Dark current and capacitance measurements as a function of applied forward and reverse bias are presented. The results show low leakage current densities, in the range of nA/cm2 at the maximum internal electric field (22 kV/cm). The unintentional doping concentration of the i layer, calculated from capacitance measurements, was found to be <1014 cm−3. Photocurrent measurements were performed under visible and near infrared light illumination for both diodes. The analysis of these measurements suggests the presence of a non-active (dead) layer (0.16 μm thickness) at the p+ side top contact interface, where the photogenerated carriers do not contribute to the photocurrent, possibly due to recombination. One of the diodes, D1, was also characterized as detector for room temperature photon counting X-ray spectroscopy; the best energy resolution achieved (FWHM) at 5.9 keV was 745 eV. The noise analysis of the system, based on spectra obtained at different shaping times and applied reverse biases, showed that the dominant source of noise is the dielectric noise. It was also calculated that there was at least (165±24) eV charge trapping noise at 0 V
