Prognostic Launch Vehicle Probability of Failure Assessment Methodology for Conceptual Systems Predicated on Human Causal Factors
Lessons learned from past failures of launch vehicle developments and operations were used to create a new method to predict the probability of failure of conceptual systems. Existing methods such as Probabilistic Risk Assessments and Human Risk Assessments were considered but found to be too cumbersome for this type of system-wide application for yet-to-be-flown vehicles. The basis for this methodology were historic databases of past failures, where it was determined that various faulty human-interactions were the predominant root causes of failure rather than deficient component reliabilities evaluated through statistical analysis. This methodology contains an expert scoring part which can be used in either a qualitative or a quantitative mode. The method produces two products: a numerical score of the probability of failure or guidance to program management on critical areas in need of increased focus to improve the probability of success. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of this new method, data from a concluded vehicle program (USAF's Titan IV with the Centaur G-Prime upper stage) was used as a test case. Although the theoretical vs. actual probability of failure was found to be in reasonable agreement (4.46% vs. 6.67% respectively) the underlying sub-root cause scoring had significant disparities attributable to significant organizational changes and acquisitions. Recommendations are made for future applications of this method to ongoing launch vehicle development programs
Assessing Agreement between Radiomic Features Computed for Multiple CT Imaging Settings
Objectives: Radiomics utilizes quantitative image features (QIFs) to characterize tumor phenotype. In practice, radiological images are obtained from different vendors’ equipment using various imaging acquisition settings. Our objective was to assess the inter-setting agreement of QIFs computed from CT images by varying two parameters, slice thickness and reconstruction algorithm.
Materials and Methods: CT images from an IRB-approved/HIPAA-compliant study assessing thirty-two lung cancer patients were included for the analysis. Each scan’s raw data were reconstructed into six imaging series using combinations of two reconstruction algorithms (Lung[L] and Standard[S]) and three slice thicknesses (1.25mm, 2.5mm and 5mm), i.e., 1.25L, 1.25S, 2.5L, 2.5S, 5L and 5S. For each imaging-setting, 89 well-defined QIFs were computed for each of the 32 tumors (one tumor per patient). The six settings led to 15 inter-setting comparisons (combinatorial pairs). To reduce QIF redundancy, hierarchical clustering was done. Concordance correlation coefficients (CCCs) were used to assess inter-setting agreement of the non-redundant feature groups. The CCC of each group was assessed by averaging CCCs of QIFs in the group.
Results: Twenty-three non-redundant feature groups were created. Across all feature groups, the best inter-setting agreements (CCCs>0.8) were 1.25S vs 2.5S, 1.25L vs 2.5L, and 2.5S vs 5S; the worst (CCCs0.8 across all imaging settings.
Conclusions: Varying degrees of inter-setting disagreements of QIFs exist when features are computed from CT images reconstructed using different algorithms and slice thicknesses. Our findings highlight the importance of harmonizing imaging acquisition for obtaining consistent QIFs to study tumor imaging phonotype

Synchrotron x-ray scattering of magnetic and electronic structure of UN and U2N3 epitaxial films
We examine the magnetic ordering of UN and of a closely related nitride,
U2N3, by preparing thin epitaxial films and using synchrotron x-ray techniques.
The magnetic configuration and subsequent coupling to the lattice are key
features of the electronic structure. The well-known antiferromagnetic (AF)
ordering of UN is confirmed, but the expected accompanying distortion at Tn is
not observed. Instead, we propose that the strong magneto-elastic interaction
at low temperature involves changes in the strain of the material. These
strains vary as a function of the sample form. As a consequence, the accepted
AF configuration of UN may be incorrect. In the case of cubic a-U2N3, no single
crystals have been previously prepared, and we have determined the AF ordering
wave-vector. The AF Tn is close to that previously reported. In addition,
resonant diffraction methods have identified an aspherical quadrupolar charge
contribution in U2N3 involving the 5f electrons; the first time this has been
observed in an actinide compound
TrkA expression decreases the in vivo aggressiveness of C6 glioma cells
We stably expressed the nerve growth factor receptor trkA or a truncated trkA lacking the kinase domain (trkA delta) in a highly tumorigenic rat glioma cell line, C6. Survival of rats with large intrastriatal inocula of C6trkA cells was significantly longer than for rats bearing C6 or C6trkA delta cells. Histological studies revealed that C6trkA cells were much less invasive than C6 or C6trkA delta cells and had a greater rate of apoptosis. There was no apparent induction of differentiation of C6 cells by trkA. Therefore, unlike what is observed in neuroblastomas, trkA decreases tumorigenicity by modulating invasiveness and tumor cell death independent of inducing differentiation. This novel mechanism suggests a new therapeutic strategy for malignant gliomas
X-ray Signatures of an Ionized Reprocessor in the Seyfert galaxy Ton S 180
We discuss the hard X-ray properties of the Seyfert galaxy Ton S 180, based
upon the analysis of ASCA data. We find the X-ray flux varied by a factor ~2 on
a time scale of a few thousand seconds. The source showed significantly higher
amplitude of variability in the 0.5-2 keV band than in the 2-10 keV band. The
continuum is adequately parameterized as a Gamma ~ 2.5 power-law across the
0.6--10 keV band . We confirm the recent discovery of an emission line of high
equivalent width, due to Fe K-shell emission from highly-ionized material.
These ASCA data show the Fe line profile to be broad and asymmetric and
tentatively suggest it is stronger during the X-ray flares, consistent with an
origin from the inner parts of an accretion disk. The X-ray spectrum is complex
below 2 keV, possibly due to emission from a blend of soft X-ray lines, which
would support the existence of an ionized reprocessor, most likely due to a

Impact of clinical characteristics on human chorionic gonadotropin regression after molar pregnancy
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the effects of age, race/ethnicity, body mass index, and contraception on human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) regression following the evacuation of a molar pregnancy.
METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of 277 patients with molar pregnancies between January 1, 1994 and December 31, 2015. The rate of hCG regression was estimated using mixed-effects linear regression models on daily log-transformed serum hCG levels after evacuation.
RESULTS: There were no differences in hCG half-lives among age (p=0.13) or race/ethnicity (p=0.16) groups. Women with obesity and hormonal contraceptive use demonstrated faster hCG regression than their counterparts (3.2 versus. 3.7 days, p=0.02 and 3.4 versus. 4.0 days, p=0.002, respectively).
CONCLUSION: Age and race/ethnicity were not associated with hCG regression rates. Hormonal contraceptive use and obesity were associated with shorter hCG half-lives, but with unlikely clinical significance. It is important to understand whether the clinical characteristics of patients may influence the hCG regression curve, as it has been proposed as a way to predict the risk of gestational trophoblastic neoplasia
The Spectral Energy Distribution and Emission-Line properties of the NLS1 Galaxy Arakelian 564
We present the intrinsic spectral energy distribution (SED) of the NLS1
Arakelian 564, constructed with contemporaneous data obtained during a
multi-wavelength, multi-satellite observing campaign in 2000 and 2001. We
compare it with that of the NLS1 Ton S180 and with those obtained for BLS1s to
infer how the relative accretion rates vary among the Sy1 population. Although
the peak of the SED is not well constrained, most of the energy is emitted in
the 10-100 eV regime, constituting roughly half of the emitted energy in the
optical/X-ray ranges. This is consistent with a primary spectral component
peaking in the extreme UV/soft X-ray band, and disk-corona models, hence high
accretion rates. Indeed, we estimate that \dot{m}~1. We examine the emission
lines in its spectrum, and we constrain the physical properties of the
line-emitting gas through photoionization modeling. The line-emitting gas is
characterized by log n~11 and log U~0, and is stratified around log U~0. Our
estimate of the radius of the H\beta-emitting region ~10 \pm 2 lt-days is
consistent with the radius-luminosity relationships found for Sy1 galaxies. We
also find evidence for super-solar metallicity in this NLS1. We show that the
emission lines are not good diagnostics for the underlying SEDs and that the
absorption line studies offer a far more powerful tool to determine the
ionizing continuum of AGNs, especially if comparing the lower- and
