    Student Reflections on Position and Experiences in the Doctors of Tomorrow Program

    Racial diversity in the medical field remains elusive. Actively engaging high school students from communities underrepresented in medicine (URiM) through pipeline programs has been identified as a viable strategy to support diversification of the U.S. physician population. However, students’ perspectives toward these programs remains unclear. In this study, we aim to elicit insights of URiM students matriculating to postsecondary education who participated in the Doctors of Tomorrow (DoT) program to better understand their experiences. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 of the 17 high school students from the inaugural year of DoT. We explored URiM students’ experiences during DoT involvement, as well as growth, interpersonal interactions, and plans for the near future. Transcripts from the interviews were coded and analyzed using qualitative thematic analysis. We identified three main themes: contextually relevant experiences, meaningful relationships and interactions, and empowerment and personal agency. Access to hands-on clinical opportunities along with meaningful relationships with mentors provide students with a sense of agency that can ultimately influence their career trajectory. Understanding student experiences is important for continuing to enhance participant engagement and foster sustainability of programs that support URiM students in their pursuit of medical professions

    Using film in multicultural and social justice faculty development: Scenes from Crash

    We designed a faculty development workshop integrating scene excerpts from the Academy Award–winning movie Crash and active learning methods to encourage faculty participation and generate participant dialogue. The aims of this workshop were to enhance awareness of issues related to teaching in a multicultural classroom; stimulate discussion on teaching and learning about potentially contentious issues linked to race, ethnicity, religion, gender, geographical origin, and class; and expose faculty to the use of multimedia to facilitate discussion on topics of diversity and social justice. Twenty‐five faculty attended 3 workshops in various venues, 18 of whom completed workshop evaluations. The workshop evaluation revealed that all participants believed that the scene excerpts and discussions helped them to reflect on their own attitudes toward race and diversity and felt better prepared to effectively facilitate classroom discussions on similar issues. This workshop is a useful tool for helping faculty to develop the skills and confidence to facilitate, manage, and stimulate discussions on controversial issues in multicultural education that may otherwise be avoided due to lack of expertise or experience.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/87041/1/20126_ftp.pd

    Control of Cheese Microflora using Bacteriocins.

    End of Project ReportBacteriocins are proteins, produced by some bacteria which are capable of inhibiting other bacteria. The overall aim of this project was the development and exploitation of bacteriocins such as Lacticin 3147 (produced by a food-grade microorganism), as biological tools to control the microflora of foods. Lacticin 3147-producing strains were evaluated for their ability to improve the microbial quality of a variety of dairy products and in particular, Cheddar cheese. The manipulation of cheese flora using bacteriocins should offer manufacturers greater control in the consistency and quality of the final product, in addition to improving its safety. In concert with these studies, Lacticin 3147 was studied in detail at the molecular level resulting in its biochemical and genetic analysis.     Attitudes of Ghanaian women toward genetic testing for sickle cell trait

    ObjectiveTo explore the attitudes of Ghanaian women toward genetic testing for the sickle cell trait and to investigate key factors that promote or impede the decision to pursue knowledge of the carrier status.MethodsA survey, administered in person to Ghanaian women, collected demographic information and information on the participants’ knowledge about their carrier status, their attitudes toward genetic testing, and their perceptions of the implications of being a carrier. The results for women who had previously undergone testing and those who had not were compared.ResultsOf 124 participants, 75 had been tested for the sickle cell trait and 49 had not. Some 53% of the women who had been tested did not know their carrier status. Most women agreed that getting a prenatal genetic test was important. However, nontested women were more likely to lack the financial resources to undergo testing, to think that testing is futile because sickle cell disease is not curable, and to believe that the outcome of their child’s health is determined by God.ConclusionThe women tended to have favorable attitudes toward genetic testing, but numerous barriers remained that precluded knowledge of their carrier status or the pursuit of this knowledge.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/135529/1/ijgo264.pd

    Trisomy 21 dysregulates T cell lineages toward an autoimmunity-prone state associated with interferon hyperactivity

    Trisomy 21 (T21) causes Down syndrome (DS), a condition characterized by high prevalence of autoimmune disorders. However, the molecular and cellular mechanisms driving this phenotype remain unclear. Building upon our previous finding that T cells from people with DS show increased expression of interferon (IFN)stimulated genes, we have completed a comprehensive characterization of the peripheral T cell compartment in adults with DS with and without autoimmune conditions. CD8+ T cells from adults with DS are depleted of naĂŻve subsets and enriched for differentiated subsets, express higher levels of markers of activation and senescence (e.g., IFN-Îł, Granzyme B, PD-1, KLRG1), and overproduce cytokines tied to autoimmunity (e.g., TNF-α). Conventional CD4+ T cells display increased differentiation, polarization toward the Th1 and Th1/17 states, and overproduction of the autoimmunity-related cytokines IL-17A and IL-22. Plasma cytokine analysis confirms elevation of multiple autoimmunity-related cytokines (e.g., TNF-α, IL17A–D, IL-22) in people with DS, independent of diagnosis of autoimmunity. Although Tregs are more abundant in DS, functional assays show that CD8+ and CD4+ effector T cells with T21 are resistant to Treg-mediated suppression, regardless of Treg karyotype. Transcriptome analysis of white blood cells and T cells reveals strong signatures of T cell differentiation and activation that correlate positively with IFN hyperactivity. Finally, mass cytometry analysis of 8 IFN-inducible phosphoepitopes demonstrates that T cell subsets with T21 show elevated levels of basal IFN signaling and hypersensitivity to IFN-α stimulation. Therefore, these results point to T cell dysregulation associated with IFN hyperactivity as a contributor to autoimmunity in DS.Fil: Araya, Paula.     Cataclysmic Variables from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. VIII. The Final Year (2007–2008)

    This paper completes the series of cataclysmic variables (CVs) identified from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) I/II. The coordinates, magnitudes, and spectra of 33 CVs are presented. Among the 33 are eight systems known prior to SDSS (CT Ser, DO Leo, HK Leo, IR Com, V849 Her, V405 Peg, PG1230+226, and HS0943+1404), as well as nine objects recently found through various photometric surveys. Among the systems identified since the SDSS are two polar candidates, two intermediate polar candidates, and one candidate for containing a pulsating white dwarf. Our follow-up data have confirmed a polar candidate from Paper VII and determined tentative periods for three of the newly identified CVs. A complete summary table of the 285 CVs with spectra from SDSS I/II is presented as well as a link to an online table of all known CVs from both photometry and spectroscopy that will continue to be updated as future data appear
