A mapping study on blood glucose recommender system for patients with gestational diabetes mellitus

Blood glucose (BG) prediction system can help gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) patient to improve the BG control with managing their dietary intake based on healthy food. Many techniques have been developed to deal with blood glucose prediction, especially those for recommender system. In this study, we conduct a systematic mapping study to investigate recent research about BG prediction in recommender systems. This study describes an overview of research (2014-2018) about BG prediction techniques that has been used for BG recommender system. As results, 25 studies concerning BG prediction in recommender system were selected. We observed that although there is numerous studies published, only a few studies took serious discussion about techniques used to incorporate the BG algorithms. Our result highlighted that only one study discusses hybrid filtering technique in BG recommender system for GDM even though it has an ability to learn from experience and to improve prediction performance. We hope that this study will encourage researchers to consider not only machine learning and artificial intelligent techniques but also hybrid filtering technique for BG recommender system in the future research

Evaluating the effectiveness of data quality framework in software engineering

The quality of data is important in research working with data sets because poor data quality may lead to invalid results. Data sets contain measurements that are associated with metrics and entities; however, in some data sets, it is not always clear which entities have been measured and exactly which metrics have been used. This means that measurements could be misinterpreted. In this study, we develop a framework for data quality assessment that determines whether a data set has sufficient information to support the correct interpretation of data for analysis in empirical research. The framework incorporates a dataset metamodel and a quality assessment process to evaluate the data set quality. To evaluate the effectiveness of our framework, we conducted a user study. We used observations, a questionnaire and think aloud approach to provide insights into the framework through participant thought processes while applying the framework. The results of our study provide evidence that most participants successfully applied the definitions of dataset category elements and the formal definitions of data quality issues to the datasets. Further work is needed to reproduce our results with more participants, and to determine whether the data quality framework is generalizable to other types of data sets

A New Multi-Class Rebalancing Framework for Imbalance Medical Data

Class imbalance exists in many data domains, posing numerous challenges to the data research community. Medical datasets, in most cases, are predominantly imbalanced in nature. Through tackling multi-class issues, most researchers preferred the conventional method of decomposing it into binary classes for a more convenient solution. This method is not applicable for solving sensitive and crucial domains, such as medical data. Classifying medical datasets require all the classes to retain their form and maintain clinical validity. In this article, we develop a rebalancing framework for the multi-classification of imbalanced medical data using SCUT (SMOTE and Cluster-based Undersampling Technique) to rebalance the imbalanced class distribution, a feature selection method using a combination of SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) and Recursive Feature Elimination (RFE), and DES-MI (Dynamic Ensemble Selection for multi-class) for improved multi classification performance. Two novelties contribute to the performance of our framework: improvised SCUT by implementing two clustering algorithms, and our proposed pool classifier selection for DES-MI. The performance of the proposed framework was compared with other state-of-the-art imbalanced frameworks using eight imbalanced datasets, each with varying degrees of imbalance. The experimental results indicate that our proposed framework performed better with average performance of 81.77%, 73.57%, and 75.87% in terms of Macro Average accuracy, extended G-mean, and Macro Average AUC, respectively. Our framework drastically increases the overall performance, owing to its ability to significantly handles the multi-class imbalance problem

Review on hypertension diagnosis using expert system and wearable devices

The popularity of smartphones and wearable devices is increasing in the global market. These devices track physical exercise records, heartbeat, medicines, and self-health diagnosis. The wearable devices can also collect personal health parameters include hypertension diagnosis. Hypertension is one of the risk factors for cardiovascular-related diseases among the Malaysian population. Many mobile applications are paired with wearable devices to monitor health conditions, but none of them able to diagnose hypertension. In this study, we reviewed research papers that focused on hypertension using expert systems and wearable devices. We performed a systematic literature review based on hypertension factors, expert systems, and wearable devices. We found 15 specific research papers after the filtering process. The key findings highlighted three main focuses, which are the factors of hypertension, the expert system techniques, and the types of sensors in wearable devices. Blood pressure is the most common factor of hypertension that can be collected by wearable devices. As for the expert system techniques, we determined the three most common techniques are machine learning, neural network, and fuzzy logic. Lastly, the wrist band is the most common sensor for wearable devices in hypertension-related research

Comparison on Scorecard and Dashboard in Smart Water Monitoring Application

The Smart Water has been a part of the Internet of Things (IoT) which evolves drastically and their involvement in the Smart Home make it a complete infrastructure. Smart Water is a term commonly used to define an automatic water quality monitoring system that is capable of measuring pH and turbidity value through sensor by using Smart Devices. The importance of Smart Water is the way of its data, such as pH and turbidity value will be presented to users. The way of data presentation can be varied depends on the platform that used by users and roles. This paper is based on the comparison made on the data presentation types used in Smart Water technology. Data presentation types such as scorecard and dashboard are compared based on research result to show their relevancy towards real-time data presentation and interactive to human in the Smart Water environment. Critical evolution towards data presentation types shows that dashboard is suitable in order to achieve real-time data presentation and interactive data visualization to human which help in data analysis and decision making. Global perspective of familial hypercholesterolaemia: a cross-sectional study from the EAS Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Studies Collaboration (FHSC)

none724siBackground The European Atherosclerosis Society Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Studies Collaboration (FHSC) global registry provides a platform for the global surveillance of familial hypercholesterolaemia through harmonisation and pooling of multinational data. In this study, we aimed to characterise the adult population with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia and described how it is detected and managed globally.Methods Using FHSC global registry data, we did a cross-sectional assessment of adults (aged 18 years or older) with a clinical or genetic diagnosis of probable or definite heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia at the time they were entered into the registries. Data were assessed overall and by WHO regions, sex, and index versus non-index cases.Findings Of the 61 612 individuals in the registry, 42 167 adults (21 999 [53.6%] women) from 56 countries were included in the study. Of these, 31 798 (75.4%) were diagnosed with the Dutch Lipid Clinic Network criteria, and 35 490 (84.2%) were from the WHO region of Europe. Median age of participants at entry in the registry was 46.2 years (IQR 34.3-58.0); median age at diagnosis of familial hypercholesterolaemia was 44.4 years (32.5-56.5), with 40.2% of participants younger than 40 years when diagnosed. Prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors increased progressively with age and varied by WHO region. Prevalence of coronary disease was 17.4% (2.1% for stroke and 5.2% for peripheral artery disease), increasing with concentrations of untreated LDL cholesterol, and was about two times lower in women than in men. Among patients receiving lipid-lowering medications, 16 803 (81.1%) were receiving statins and 3691 (21.2%) were on combination therapy, with greater use of more potent lipid-lowering medication in men than in women. Median LDL cholesterol was 5.43 mmol/L (IQR 4.32-6.72) among patients not taking lipid-lowering medications and 4.23 mmol/L (3.20-5.66) among those taking them. Among patients taking lipid-lowering medications, 2.7% had LDL cholesterol lower than 1.8 mmol/L; the use of combination therapy, particularly with three drugs and with proprotein convertase subtilisin-kexin type 9 inhibitors, was associated with a higher proportion and greater odds of having LDL cholesterol lower than 1.8 mmol/L. Compared with index cases, patients who were non-index cases were younger, with lower LDL cholesterol and lower prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors and cardiovascular diseases (all p<0.001).Interpretation Familial hypercholesterolaemia is diagnosed late. Guideline-recommended LDL cholesterol concentrations are infrequently achieved with single-drug therapy. Cardiovascular risk factors and presence of coronary disease were lower among non-index cases, who were diagnosed earlier. Earlier detection and greater use of combination therapies are required to reduce the global burden of familial hypercholesterolaemia. Copyright (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd.
