Temperature during seed imbibition has been found to influence germination rate and final percent germination. Seeds of one cultivated variety and five weedy rice strains, collected from different localities in Peninsular Malaysia, were used to determine their degree of dormancy and cardinal temperatures. Meanwhile, standard germination and tetrazolium chloride (TTC) tests were used to evaluate the percentage of seed viability and degree of dormancy. Seed germination test at six different constant temperatures (between 10 and 35oC) was applied to determine the cardinal temperatures estimated by linear regression models, base temperature, Tb, optimum temperature, To, and maximum temperature, Tc. The TTC test was found to be a simple and quick test to determine the degree of seed dormancy among different weedy rice strains, when used together with a standard germination test. Germination rate was found to be related to the degree of dormancy but it had no influence on the range of cardinal temperatures. The Tb among the five weedy rice strains was in the range of 2-7.3oC. The To varied between 28.1 and 37.5oC, with an average of 32.5oC. This temperature (To) was higher than that of the cultivated MR73 variety (24.3oC), whereas the range of Tc was 42.2-43.3oC. The study indicated that the non-dormant cultivated rice seed had lower Tb and To values than the dormant seed of weedy rice

Indicators of university-industry knowledge transfer performance and their implications for universities: evidence from the UK’s HE-BCI survey

    Get PDF
Focusing on the measurement of universities’ performance in knowledge transfer, we outline some critical issues connected with the choice of appropriate indicators: in particular, we argue that, in order to allow universities to correctly represent their knowledge transfer performance, indicators should include a variety of knowledge transfer activities, reflect a variety of impacts, allow comparability between institutions, and avoid the creation of perverse behavioural incentives. To illustrate these issues empirically, we discuss the case of the United Kingdom’s Higher Education –Business and Community Interaction (HE-BCI) survey. We show that the indicators used to measure and reward universities’ engagement in knowledge transfer are not fully comprehensive, they are better suited to capture the impact of certain types of activities than others and they are influenced by institutional strategies and characteristics rather than simply reflecting different performances. The conclusions explore some promising directions to address some of these problems

Overview of the sensitivity of Ge- and Al-doped silicon dioxide optical fibres to ionizing radiation

    Get PDF
This paper reviews the thermoluminescence sensitivity of Ge- and Al- doped SiO2 optical fibre subjected to various ionizing radiations. It is found that the Ge- doped SiO2 optical fiber has the thermoluminescence response superior to Al-doped SiO2 optical fibre at certain energy and dose range in alpha, beta, photon and electron irradiation. High thermoluminescence intensity per unit dose goes to photon and electron irradiation than alpha and beta irradiation of lower energy. This probably due to the linear energy transfer that influence the dose deposition in the material as incident ionizing radiation striking the surface of Ge- and Al- doped SiO2 optical fibre. However, both doped SiO2 optical fibres show good linearity at studied dose range. It has been proven by researchers providing great potential as a dose absorbed measuring devices especially in radiotherapy energy and dose rang

Effects of ultrasonic waves on enhancement of relative volatilities in methanol-water mixtures

    Get PDF
The application of ultrasonic wave in various fields including separation process has increased predominantly. This paper reports the practicability of using ultrasonic wave to enhance separation of binary mixtures by distillation. The binary mixture utilized was methanol-water. The effect of different ultrasonic intensity at 50, 100, 200 and 250 W/A.cm2 with frequency of 40 kHz to vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) of methanol-water was investigated to obtain the most suitable operating intensity. Experimental studies were also carried out to investigate the frequency effect (25 and 68 kHz) to VLE data. It was found that the use of ultrasonic wave enhanced the separation process by increasing the relative volatility of components. The highest average relative volatility of methanol-water at 29.413 was obtained from experimental study using intensity 200 W/A.cm2 and frequency of 25 kHz. The changes in relative volatility and VLE were caused by cavitational activities and vacuum effect that occur during transmission of ultrasonic wave in liquid medium. The results from this study proved the practical feasibility of using ultrasonic wave to enhance separation of binary mixtures in distillation column
