    Molecular and morphophysiological responses cocoa leaves with different concentrations of anthocyanin to variations in light levels

    Theobroma cacao gives higher yield when cultivated in full sun under irrigation system with fertilization, because is a species little conservative in relation the efficiency of water use. On the other hand, T. cacao is usually cultivated under shade conditions in ‘Cabruca’ and agroforestry systems but with low yield. It has been observed under field conditions that the genotypes of T. cacao with high concentration of anthocyanins in young leaves are more tolerant to high irradiance stress when grown in full sun. The accumulation of flavonoids or other UVabsorbing compounds in the leaf epidermis is one of the most important mechanisms to screening out UV-B radiation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different levels of light on three clonal cacao genotypes (‘Catongo’, SCA-6 and SJ-2), contrasting in relation to accumulation of anthocyanin levels in young leaves, by evaluations of photosynthesis, activity of guaiacol peroxidase (GPX), chloroplastid pigment contents and vacuolar (anthocyanins) flavonoids contents, anatomical characteristics and gene expression of the leaf. In summary, (i) the anthocyanins contents in leaf level did not provide protection against photoinhibition in T. cacao, (ii) the ‘Catongo’ and SJ-2 genotypes showed greater phenotypic plasticity to the morphology and the chloroplastidic pigment contents in the leaf, while the SCA-6 genotype allocated more in the flavonoids content and hsp70 gene expression; (iii) the relative expression of the genes psbA and psbO, did not vary between genotypes under irradiance stress

    Sensibilização Ambiental Acerca da Redução do Uso de Sacolas Plásticas no Supermercado Escola, Viçosa, MG

    A atual sociedade insere-se numa economia do descarte, em que os produtos apresentam baixa durabilidade, destacando- se as sacolas plásticas. Tais sacolas têm alta praticidade, entretanto, trazem vários problemas ambientais como: poluição visual, entupimento de bueiros, malefícios à fauna marinha etc. O projeto intitulado Sacola Legal, desenvolvido no Supermercado Escola, localizado no Campus da Universidade Federal de Viçosa em Viçosa, MG, teve início em 2008, onde fez-se um diagnóstico quanto ao consumo de sacolas plásticas. Em 2009, o projeto trabalhou a sensibilização ambiental, com os funcionários e clientes, visando à racionalização do uso das sacolas plásticas, além de propor medidas alternativas à utilização das mesmas. Dentre as ações realizadas até o momento destacam-se: observação do comportamento dos embaladores e consumidores junto aos caixas do Supermercado Escola; controle no estoque para verifi cação do consumo de sacolas; aplicação de entrevistas aos clientes e funcionários; e formação de comissão. Com a análise das entrevistas pôde-se perceber que 97% dos clientes e 97% dos funcionários acreditam que as sacolas plásticas causam problemas ambientais, dentre outros. Conclui-se através dos resultados obtidos que é necessário trabalhar a Educação Ambiental com os clientes e funcionários

    Phytochemical characterization and bioactivity of ethanolic extracts on eggs of citrus blackfly

    ABSTRACT: The main objectives of this study were to determine the content of secondary metabolites (carotenoids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, and tannins) of Argemone mexicana L., Ipomoea carnea Jacq. subsp. Fistulosa (Martius ex Choisy), Amorimia rigida (A.Juss.) W. R. Anderson, Ricinus communis L. and Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & L. M. Perry using UV-VIS spectroscopy, and evaluating the bioactivity of the ethanolic extracts on citrus blackfly eggs (Aleurocanthus woglumi Ashby, 1915). Pera sweet orange leaves infested with citrus blackfly eggs were treated by immersion in 0.5, 1.0, 5.0, and 10%; each replicate consisted of 30 eggs. The experimental design was completely randomized, with seven treatments and four replications. Three immersions of leaves with eggs were performed, and the mortality was evaluated seven days after the procedure. Leaves were placed in Petri dishes and kept in incubators [25±1°C; relative humidity (RH) 60±5% and 12 hours]. S. aromaticum peduncle presented high content of tannins and phenolic compounds, while R. communis leaves showed high content of phenolic compounds. The commercial product Bioneem© caused egg infeasibility greater than 85% at all concentrations. Treatments (10%) that caused the greatest egg mortality were Bioneem© (94.74%), R. communis extract (81.58%), and the extract of S. aromaticum peduncle (80.57%)

    Characterization of corn landraces planted grown in the campos gerais region (Paraná, Brazil) for industrial utilization

    This work has the objective of characterizing twenty corn landraces grown in the Campos Gerais region (Paraná State) in relation to its chemical composition (moisture, ash, protein, ether extract, dietary fiber and starch) and physical properties (weight of 1000 grains, real density, flotation index, granulometry and color). In addition, also the lab scale processing of the kernels from the varieties was carried out for producing starch; starch purity was evaluated by measuring its protein contamination. Amylose contents and viscoamylograph profile were also evaluated. The results showed that the evaluated landraces have differences in chemical composition as well as in pericarp/endosperm/germ proportions and consequently it should have different industrial applications and interest for plant breeding.<br>Esse trabalho teve o objetivo de caracterizar vinte variedades de milho crioulo cultivadas na região dos Campos Gerais (Estado do Paraná) em relação a sua composição química (umidade, cinzas, proteína, extrato etéreo, fibra alimentar e amido) e propriedades físicas (peso de 1000 grãos, densidade real, índice de flotação, granulometria e cor) Além disso, foi feito o processamento dos grãos em escala de laboratório para a extração do amido, sendo mensurado o teor de proteína. Foram avaliados os conteúdos de amilose e o perfil viscoamilográfico. Os resultados mostraram que os milhos apresentaram diferentes composições químicas e proporções pericarpo/endosperma/ gérmen e consequentemente podem ter diferentes aplicações industriais e interesse ao melhoramento de plantas
